I would say it's a bit late to get a ticket right now, considering the event is today. And, already made plan anyways, hope ya'll have a good time tonight!

Hollywood Hogan, this one is for you!

I kind of like not having to run my AC or the heater in My house. No sun for me.

    S Jersey players?

Hey, I feel kind of like a stranger walking into a local's bar where everyone stops talking to look at you, but..

Does this forum include anyone from the S Jersey shore area? I'm looking to break out of my small circle of tennis buddies for some new playing partners. I'm probably around a 4.0 - 4.5, but I will play at any level.

^^ Sorry, Thug. Can't help ya there. I'm down in the metro Richmond VA area.

A big shoutout to Chris et al. They've started off gangbusters with a nice 4-1 win. Woohoo!

And, partner and I took down a solid team from the la-dest-da Club in town, 6-3, 6-4. We're socked in with rain so tournament has been spread all over town to indoor facilities. Bad Karma. We ended up at our opponents' home courts. But I guess it didn't really work out for them. Nerves were clearly in play and they had a huge cheering section. We had some peeps too, but not as many and we pulled out a nice, solid win. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

To my knowledge Im probably the closest one to you. But i live in Maryland so wouldnt be able to meet up with you very often. I'm about 45 minutes from Camden NJ. So if you are close to there we would hit every so often.

Yes he did. Perhaps that is why he outaced Sampras.

so met up with sportsfan yesturday. we were out there for 2 hours! almost no break either. we get on court which played rather fast, and he proceeds to blast 185mph forehands down the line. his backhand was definitely weaker, but then he brought out the slice. the slice!!!!!!! deadlier than sappy at a buffet. so yea. he moved me around a lot too. hopefully i will do better next week.

edit-i didint use my normal sticks. was demoign the new head sticks plus the donnay dualx black. one of the best feeling sticks ever. might be switching to donnay!

It was fun hitting around with zap y'day. Good game, he's very consistent off both wings (all the advice from TW peeps to the videos drilling in? :) with lots of top spin from the semi-western grip. I spent a good amount of time watching cross court winners fly by.

From the night before and since Drakulie was the official stringer of the event. Here is what I know.

Chang: Aeropro GT plus. Stock almost. Forgot the strings
Sampras: Believed to be a blacked out Babolat Storm GT limited. Strings were unknown black poly. He had lead everywhere.
Courier: Donnay (had red on it). He strings with cheap Gosen.

If you want more details.. ask Drakulie.

My tennis weekend was one of a multitude of emotions.

I played in this. It's a rather unique format where each club sends its top two mens & ladies doubles teams plus the top (remaining) mixed team at each of the NTRP levels (3.0 to 4.5W/5.0 men). There are too many clubs to ensure everyone plays everyone so they've got a mixed draw and point system to tally up the totals. It's a bit goofy: 2 pts for a win (of any kind), 1 pt for fielding a team (at that level), 0 pts for a default (for whatever reason).

While there are a lot of bragging rights involved, there's not much else. With that point structure, the difference between winning all three of your matches and losing all three of your matches is a whopping 3 points (3 vs. 6). But still, it pretty much guaranteed to be some of the top doubles competition in town, with even the club pros slugging it out at the 5.0 level.

Our club did an in-house tournament to determine who went and long-time partner and I finally made it. Won Friday against a good pair, 6-3, 6-4.

Saturday, however, was sublime. I'll always consider it one of my (& partner's) finest tennis hours. Ever. 6-0, 6-3. That first set was literally the best we've ever played; it was like nothing could go wrong. Mishits fell in, net cords dropped on their side and every ball approaching their lines was just inside the tape. Tightened up a bit at the first of the second because we couldn't believe the first set results but then settled down to close it out easily.

Sunday, was another story entirely. Can you say d-o-g-f-i-g-h-t? If I were like you guys, I'd go find a pic to photoshop and insert here. Walked on court at 10:50am. Walked off at 1:45pm....with a 7-5, 6-7(7), 10-7 WIN!! They had ~10 set points in the second, including at 5*-3, 40-15...but we came back in that game, even had a chance to serve for the match at 6*-5, but only had one match point. The lady playing ad was tough as nails with her returns and it was incredibly difficult to win on that side the entire match.

But like us, I suppose, they tired as well and our long-time partnership paid off when it really counted. We had a few points down that TB stretch where our court coverage gave us the upperhand and we took advantage.

All that, though, was sadly in vein. After our marathon match, and we left ~2:30pm, our club was in 1st place. At the end of the day and for the final standing, we finished 4th. Still, it was our club's best showing and we've a lot to be proud of. It was a lot of fun, good camaraderie between the haves (4/5s) and wannabees (the 3s) and some fantastic tennis to play and watch.

Nice writeup, AQ! And nice playing, for sure. It's funny how every match has its own character. It;s nice to win the easy ones, but the dogfights are even more satisfying. Sorry that I couldn't make it to watch a little.

Thanks, Mike. Good to see you stop in here.

And thanks, Sappy. I knew one of you would come through. I would've jumped off that board into the water after it was all said and done. And the (very nice) club that hosted it had their pool all primed and beautiful. Believe me, it was very tempted to just jump in!

Nice AQ!!! Hopefully you tired out some other Richmond ladies for this weekend too! ;).

Hmmm...I don't think any of them are going. Sorry. But we did our job for our Ladies Lunching League (LLL). One of the Sunday ladies (the ad-side, tough-as-nails gal) is on the team we have to play tomorrow. LOL We'll all see just how tired all of us are!

Since 2005. We've got ~60 sanctioned matches (plus countless social ones) together and haven't lost in three seasons of the LLL. She's got a nasty BH slice that most opponents tend to pop up. Makes for easy putaways for me at net. :)

But seriously, it's as much about our personalities meshing as well. We're the same age, grew up in the same part of town (although we didn't go to the same schools since I moved), have the same size families. We also approach tennis the same way. We're competitive as heLL but in the end It's Just Tennis. We laugh at ourselves (and each other) and people often tell us that it's impossible to tell the score just by watching us on court: we're simply having too much fun.

Thanks. Still some crud rolling around in the sinuses and upper chest but I feel like the corner's been turned.

Good luck this w/e with Districts and Playoffs!

so grossman is an upgrade over campbell. that's like saying an amc pacer is an upgrade over a yugo. at the end of the day, i wanna drive both over a cliff.

i spent a half hour trying to hit 2 handed backhands with little to no success. i think it'd be easier for me to cure cancer. went back to my ugly 1 hander and that was a little better than absolute crap. so i'm stuck choosing between absolute crap and mostly crap.

    TennisMonkey -

So you aren't the only one toying with a 2 hander. I've been wanting to go out and hit nothing but buckets of two handers, but thanks to this weather, I'm lucky to be hitting at all. Back to the one-hander, though the last time I played my friend at FRC night owl, it seems like my backhand form is slowly creeping back to "tolerable" (about to keep it in play for more than 3 shots.)

BTW- Hit with some of the guys from Pub Crawlers last night out in Ashburn. Wish you were there so we could crush them again.

What hurts more than the loss, is how they are calling romo the next coming. One week they want to sacrifice him, the other they want to saint him. Crazy.

No talk how Rex can't throw to the sideline without giving corners a chance to pick it off. I'm feeling chicago's pain. However they played well. Do not hit the panic button.

anyone else agree that LaRon Landry is grossly overrated by pretty much everyone?

yesterday in the pre-game commentary when they were comparing Landy to Polamalu I almost vomited.

had to look up when we played those guys wookie. i remember now. for some reason they pretty much gave us that match. i don't remember us doing anything spectacular. i think they were intimidated by our thunder and lightning combo (patent pending) and just didn't know what to do.

i have all winter long to make my 2 hander a thing of awesomeness. otherwise i have all winter long to get fit enough to play like steffi graf and slice backhands and blast forehands.

where's downs? did he decide to stay in arizona?

London is my favorite player on the skins.. he's a great leader and a solid tackler.

He doesn't get his due because of how stacked NFL talent is at Middle LB right now but I have the feeling he isn't too sore over it.
