You have it right except the missing Liquid Metal series were in between the Intelligence and Flexpoint series.

    cool story you may enjoy

I was in the CVS on MacArthur Blvd a couple miles east of Sibley Hospital

    I was wearing Adidas Rod Laver sneakers and an older gentleman behind me in line said to me;

"I see your shoes have Rod Laver's name on them, you are too young to have seen him play, but I had the chance to"

Turns out he saw Laver, Rosewall, Gonzales and a bunch of other dudes in the late 50s - I had to ask who he thinks the best ever is and he said he couldn't decide between Laver and Federer.

Apparently he saw Laver at the U.Maryland College Park tennis center in the 50s (whatever it was at that time).

Was very cool. Good thing I wasn't holding a box of flavored condoms or something.

Zap: You mind if I cut in line in front of you? I only have two items.

Haha we won our semifinal match so we are going to sectionals!! The finals is just to see who gets the chair prize.

    How did you do?

    Sadly, no.

VA Districts for the .5s is this weekend too. Too bad the two Richmond teams who won their respect flights had to play each other (knocking one out). And the team that prevailed, is our one sure-to-cause drama team. Oh well.

I'm assuming you're in the upcoming final match. How many slots does MD have? Two?

Ouch, Topaz. Two TBs that could have gone your way.

    Eh...but you're already at Sectionals. :p

Congrats. If you don't make 4.0 this year-end, the system's rigged against ya!

Sadly no...we lost a heartbreaker in the semis. I had a two and a half hour match...after a two hour one yesterday. Just didn't have the legs today...lost 7-6, 6-4. Our two dubs courts that lost both lost in TBs. Soooo close! I needed some cake for energy! ;)

Yeah, I kept an eye on VA districts too. I know the NOVA team, and their result was a bit of a shocker. The Loudoun team I know some people. Was gonna ask you about the Richmond team! Whaddya mean drama? Should I get my grievance ready now? (kidding!) MD does get two slots, so if you make the final, you're in. VA gets 3. DC - 1.

So, I'll be there with my DC team. Had my MD won, I'm not sure what I would have done...my MD team really got to be a close group and I've been with them two years. Ah well...hindsight kinda sucks.

Sectionals is going to be tough, no doubt about it! Gotta get through mixed sectionals first. And not get tennis-ed out...which is definitely happening.

Downs!!! How did you guys fare?

We got 2nd out of 12. So we made sectionals! We kind threw in the towel in the finals since both teams were going. But I finished 4-0! Hopefully we do the same at sectionals next weekend. I met the 8.0 mixed captain. She's like me - half Thai. Tried I sweet talk her and get some info but it didn't work haha

Grandson, primary reason I retired early and moved back here. Got competition from baseball already; he has a nice swing with a bat and a racquet, and good hand-eye coordination.

Thanks for asking. I figure he'll be thumping me before he's 6. :)

i hit yesterday with a guy that didn't want to play me in a real match cuz he was too tired. good for him cuz i beat him in 1 set after some rallying.
then today i played my dad.. a legitimate 2.0.. but the heat was crazy. after that a legitimate 4.5 showed up and i poured some water on my head and played a set against him. we were on serve at 6-5 before i forfeited cuz the last 3 games i was totally having heat stroke. 4 hours of tennis in that heat was just too much. i was drinking water but it didnt help. i had a hat on which i think was keeping in too much heat.. but by the time i took it off it was too late. seeing stars and had the chills. of course i kept playing and ended up hitting some of my best serves so i kept goin.
i luuuurve my BlxPOs but when i hit a good serve and people just doink it back i am still missing too many easy forehands from mid-court. dunno if i will ever conquer that shot. but i did blast a lot of aces and smack a lot of winners into the fence. for not playing in the past couple months i am very pleased.
i am also playing mon&tues so i went from not playing at all to playing everyday in 95deg weather. rufff.

    basically i am saying....

    i am awesome at tennis.

updates to follow as i play ladder matches next. hope u guys can sleep.. prolly on pins and needles! :p

ill have to get photos of the Dats playing to compare. i think you'd see a lot more, a) twisted wrister , b) beer belly, c) out of position and lunging for the ball. but hey, i've gotten used to playing that way and would probably blast Down_ off the court. but we'll never know i guess. woooooooooooooooo

Anyone here down at the beach for districts this past weekend? It wasn't as bad as last weekend, but it was still pretty hot & humid.

My team didn't advance, but we did take down NOVA Colt 4.5's, who lost only 1 match all season. We finished 2-1, but lost out on 'Individual Wins' for the 4th slot in the playoffs...for the 3rd year in a row...

I played #1 singles all weekend. I beat Dan Mulreany 2 & 3. The guy hit the snot out of the ball, and if it went in, I pretty much had no play on the ball.

Fortunately for me, not many went in...

The Richmond CCVs & Roanoke Bartley moved on. The bummer is we lost to CCVs the 1st day 4-1, but 3 of our matches went to a 3rd set breaker, of which we won none of them.

In particular, I had a match point serving at 5-4, on deuce, which my opponent hit an unbelievable stab volley on. No-ad scoring: game over, I never recovered. I hate no-ad.

This was the first time in a loooong time I haven't been at VA districts...it was kind of wierd!

Yes, that was a major scalp if you took down Colt 4.5s! Gotta love that team name though!

I know you feel...I keep reliving my match yesterday, thinking woulda coulda shoulda. :( I still get to go to sectionals with my DC team, but I really wanted to see my MD team go too...they deserved it.

I think they want to play in more leagues and have multiple chances to sandbag and make regional, sectionals nationals or whatever.

Me I just want to play tennis and drink some beers. Its fun like that. Its the same reason I like bowling so much I think. I would also like softball, but I was too good and it aint a challenge anymore.

Tennis and Bowling are challenging to me still. If I played as much tennis or bowling growing up as i played baseball it would probably be opposite I would be like jolly level 6.0 open player and fed up with the game or would have like 40 career 800 series and complained that pro bowlers dont make enough money.

Dats, DC is actually closer for me than the VA locations.

Plus, its more tennis. That's a good thing for those of us who like to...ya know...play tennis!

Though I overdid it again this year. I never learn.

Technically, Arlington & Alexandria were supposed to be part of DC, so I'll give those residents a pass.

But why anyone would want to play for a Maryland team, I have no idea. To quote one of the more revered philosophers of our time:

i don't see the big deal as you pay for your court time etc etc.. it's not like it's hurting someone or taking funds away from people that'd otherwise want to play or something.

Okay fellow TWMac'ers parents. Another datacall of the day:
    1. Does school ranking determine the area where you should buy your house?
    2. Do good teachers gravitate towards higher ranked schools? Or they may avoid to avoid tiger moms or teaching to kids whom already learned the material already. Besides, they are paid the same, right?
    3. Pros and cons for kids going to highly ranked schools?

I was googling and found a list of K-12 schools based on national standardize tests. I have the link somewhere if someone is interested.
thx for any feedback. Trying to come up to a list myself.

I have no kids, but I will speak on behalf of my mother 5th grade teacher in a school that is predominatly low income. They have a church come by and send over 200 meals home with kids on the weekends and over 80 of the school gets free or reduced lunches.

In Harford county there are a couple schools like that and a couple where it is rpedominalty rich folk. Then there a couple like Havre de Grace where I graduated that had a mix, but was for the most part middle class.

Mom says most teachers that long term sub at her school says its like night and day going from the rich school to her school and a couple even comented that teachers at a school like moms should get paid more because it is harder. So most teachers dont want to work at the poor school. And yes her school did pass the test that were requierd but barely. I think they had failed the previous two years.

Every school in Harford County that is close or fials those test are in the lower income bracket as well. And for the most part the higher schools are also the higher income. thats just the way it is.

My old baseball coach went from my school to one of the rich schools and hated it, it said they kids and the parents had attidudes.

So Pros of going to High ranked school

    Not getting Shanked
    Not getting Robbed
    Not getting a Walkman stolen

    Cons

Being around coddled rich people with no idea that you everyone cant get a brand new BMW on thier 16 birthday as a summer car and Land Rover to drive in the winter

I wouldnt make it necessary that the school has to be the high end of the high end. But I would avoid the low of the low. I think the mix is important.

Thanks HW. So overall would you say that the quality of education is higher in a higher income school? Or since circulum is standardized in a county, it shouldn't matter so much. I am running into this dilemna in Montgomery County as a one of the factors to look for a new place to live.

My con is that I don't want my kid to be living in a coddled pseudo environment. Don't want to play "keeping up with the Jones." Environment drives me or I drive the environment, kind of deal.

I wasnt trying to be a jerx with my question so i hope nobody was offended. I dont travel more than 3 miles to most tennis matches so i guess more enthusiastic players are more willing to travel to play competitive matches. I guess DC ca be closer cuz FRC can be a real haul in rush hour.
Me and sappy just like to crush a few winners to feel good about ourselves and then stuff our faces at a buffet.
Me and HW just try to see who can get the most aces before seeing who can eat the mostv HDG pizza! Although he is willing to travel with a grill for a chance at disc golf and tennis

Anyway, i think multiple shots at team glory and extra bagging opportunities is probably the hidden motive. Hell i dont care... I still proudly display my team SUP S&H Turkey Bowl trophy! Probably the only tennis trophy ill get.

    Im hungry.
p.s. - i won my match after 4 games due to forfeit. My league is a joke. Sigh. I was strugglin to break this guy cuz he hit everything sooooo soft. No such thing as a long baseline rally in ACTA... Just pittypat and scramble tennis. Annoying

If anybody wants to hit @wakefield hs, kenmore, or bluemont let me know.

CB, whether a teacher goes to one school or another doesn't usually have much to do with money. In Arlington, even though you had a disparity in income levels of families across the county, how much the school gets is not dependent on that. Plus, now schools that don't make AYP under No Child Left Untested may get more or less $, depending on how that idiotic mandate is carried out.

You want a school with a staff that isn't transient. That means they are happy and do not want to leave. Its a sign of a strong administration. A strong PTA also helps, because...especially at the elementary level...it can help the whole school feel like family.

My school was in a very affluent area. And the year I left, I was one of 21 who had had enough...that's NOT a good sign. Though the kids don't suffer, and they do well on the tests and have a great time at school. The school is great...for the kids.

Define 'highly ranked'. Who does this ranking? What are their qualifications? Did they determine this ranking just through looking at numbers on a piece of paper, or by actually going to and visiting the school? If its the latter, then you're good.

And you can do the same...go visit. Most schools have orientation days and times when you can tour and check things out. That's the absolute best way to get a feel for the school and the environment IMO. Don't make your decision based on someone's opinion who has never set foot in the door.

I have the distinction of being the only one of my team who didn't get to play inside. :-/ Lucky me?

They moved one of our Saturday matches in, but I didn't play that one. For the second Saturday match, I was outside, and everyone else was inside. Part of the curse of #1 singles I guess.

    *shrug*

    I wasn't.

And you guys can think all you want about opportunities...having goals and working towards something isn't a bad thing...and nobody has broken any rules.
