hey everyone. I live in Austin now but decided to move to Seattle or thereabouts before the end of the year.

Is the weather a factor at all for tennis?

i can't speak directly for seattle. but i suppose the weather in vancouver is very similar. maybe it rains more than other places but it's not that bad, imo. not much snow, so if it's a nice clear day, you can play in the winter, just bundle up :)

Every club has indoor courts and tennis is probably not as popular as in Texas, so it kind of evens out.

Will it be very expensive then? I checked out Amy Yip (or w/e it's called) prices and it's $20/hr indoors!

I'm in Portland not Seattle, but a club membership (not by the hour) is pretty reasonable.

Some of these questions have been asked and answered in pretty good detail in the "Tennis Travel" portion of the forum. You could probably do a search on "Seattle" and find several recent threads. I know I answered several questions in one such thread within the last few months.

To give you a brief summary, though, I think you're going to have to join a club to play year round. There are many fine indoor facilities, and there are some athletic clubs that have tennis courts as part of the fee or for an additional monthly cost.

When I joined the club I belong to a couple of years ago, there was a four month waiting list. That list is now, I hear, about a year long, and I think reflects that there is a picking up in the number of tennis players in the area. Our club has a membership fee of $3500 and monthly dues for our family of about $180 or so, and that includes all the playing time you want with the caveat that any family member can have only one reservation on the books at any one time.

The public facilities, Amy Yee and Robinswood, have a card system where you can buy so many court hours somehow, and then are allowed to call by phone and reserve a court. If you don't have a card, you have to make the reservations in person, I believe. At the going rate of somewhere around $20 to $25 a court (75 minutes or so), if you plan to play more than seven or eight times a month, a club costs less if you don't count the initial membership fee.

I live on what is called the "east side", which is Redmond/Bellevue, and do play much at all in Seattle. Over here, there are a fair number of good public courts, many of them belonging to the public schools. They tend to not be as busy as the courts that are at the county parks, but the school courts are reserved for school kids during the afternoon hours during tennis season, and aren't lighted as a general rule. The county owned parks usually have lit courts, but they tend to be quite a bit busier.

The East side of Portland has the Portland Tennis center (Parks and Rec) which is reasonable, the West side has the Tualitin Hills Parks and Rec Center, also reasonable, especially if you live in that city.

I live in Vancouver, WA during the summer, and in Seattle, WA during the school year (UW). I also happen to work at the UW's Nordstrom Tennis Center, and get free court time. If we do form a PNW chapter and/or a seattle chapter, i'd be happy to get a couple of guys together and get a court or two to hit around. My roommate is also on the boards, and he also works at the center. We should be able to book two courts at once as long as we can plan ahead...

If you are in Clark Co for the summer, perhaps some folks could get together for a hit in the Multnomah Co area...

After 5 might work for me (I work on campus) - especially if you can snag indoor court time to stay cool.

I don't think that would be a problem, if we scheduled something a week or so ahead of time. I didn't know you worked on campus, what do you do? Are you faculty/staff/student? Do you participate in the Husky Tennis Club?

I'm still academic staff at the UW. I'm the 2003 HTC Open Singles Champ! I participated in the Tualatin Hills interschool tourney with the club that year too. I miss hanging out with the club actually - fun times!

Raised in in the South Puget Sound region where it rained non-stop. Now I live in Central Washington where it is windy non-stop. Some of the worst tennis weather in this state.

Portland players: Did anyone see they're upping the hourly rates at the tennis center on 12th to $28 an hour? That's a big hike, like a 40% jump. I guess they haven't raised rates in years, but still...if I weren't moving soon anyway, that'd be a big ouch.

I don't mean to rip on the Tennis Center btw, it's just a big hike is all. The people who work there are awesome--more than once I've been hitting on the outdoor courts and it's started to rain, and they've let me hit on open courts inside for free.

Do you mean the PTC? Across from Franz Bakery?

Hhmmm... well it's just a $2 difference for doubles.

I'm going to be road-tripping around the US and Canada, including the Pacific Northwest, over September and October. Would anyone like a game? I've got 'TheShaun' pencilled in for Vancouver but will also be stopping in Portland and Seattle.

    Here's the main thread:

    http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=149011

Looking forward to seeing your part of the world and hopefully meeting a couple of you for a bit of tennis too! I'll be in Seattle on 20 and 21 Sep, and Portland on 18 and 19 Sep.
