In another thread, some posters actually believe the 09 Wimbledon final between Federer and Roddick was a better match than the 08 epic Federer vs. Nadal. Seemed like most believe the 08 was much better in quality and drama. thoughts?

08 was wayyyyyy better. Better rallies, better points, lot of drama, and was simply epic in the way it ended after 9 pm when the stadium was covered in darkness and was illuminated by flash lights. I will always remember that match, even though I wasnt thrilled by the result

i think that was the case in the few days after the final that people were thinking 2009 was better(fresh memories, etc)
but overall, 2008 was far better IMO

I dont see an 07 option, cause that one had a higher quality of tennis, than either

I'm a Roddick fan, so I think the 09 one was better :).

But seriously, the 09 final resembled a grass court match more than the 08 one, so I preferred it more.

    Does anyone have the numbers?

08 by far. Sure Fed lost, but that match was filled with so much drama and excitement.

'08, because it was a more exciting, dramatic match. On paper '09 was pretty high-quality, but I found it a bit boring.

Isn't that normal though, because there might be more forced errors or net approaches that limit the UE count. That's why Sampras had less UE's in his grass court matches back then.

Both matches were great. Winning a GS that head into a sudden death overtime is a great moment to remember forever for both Roger and Rafa. I don't see what's a point of this thread...such a waste of space.

Both are great matches. However, I got to give an edge to 08 final since the drama, the dynamic, the specific and overall quality of tennis were much more intense and higher. Much more thrilling than the 09 match.

Roddick and Fed fans will say 09, but that match was not legendary. Epic maybe, but not an all-time classic. I think most level headed and objective tennis fans would agree.

Same for me, I was rooting for Fed as well. 08 was better quality, 09 was better result :D

08 was dramatic and the tennis was great but the Rain delays make it seem very plagued. 09 was a serve contest. I give my vote to 09 because the match was one long run with no rain delays. Thus the better match.

08 for me, it was dramatic. I actually stopped watching for awhile, when I came back they were still playing, at first I thought it was a replay or something.

    09 seemed almost boring IMHO.
07 was as good as 08.

2008 was better than 2009, as the match-up was more even. The 2009 final was more like a guy throwing everything he had despite the fact that he knew he would probably come up short.

I think Federer's 50 aces in '09 says enough. It was a boring serve fest. I mean the score was exciting because you had no idea who was going to win, but it was rather frustrating when nearly every service game during the match was an easy hold.

2008 was the most dramatic match I have ever seen, and I watched a lot of matches.

The rain delay, the rivalry between Nad and Fed, in which both had held their own on their home turf. The potential for one of them to break through on the other's surface was in the air. The finish in the almost dark.

It was a day filling program, I was nervous the whole day and the night afterwards.

Whatever the level of play (which was high BTW), the scoreline and the tension made it unforgetable.

When Ivanisevic won Wimbledon there was also that special atmosphere.

No question 2008 was better. More than a few people think Nadal vs Verdasco was better than Roddick vs Federer, let alone last years Wimbledon final.

I wasnt real impressed with the 08 final. See that style all year long, while the 09 final had more variety. After watching tennis throughout the 90's, i can say that wasnt a servefest.

It was kinda like the yec this year, faster surface so the style was different. Not the same thing over and over with a different color surface.

As a massive Federer fan and someone who is often prone to bias, even I have to admit that the 2009 final was pretty dull.

When it went to the fifth set I spent more time looking on facebook, I didn't glance back to the TV until it was 5-all. After that it wasn't so much exciting as it was a long drawn out "Wtf?" moment.

The end of the first set was interesting, the 2nd set tiebreaker was exciting, I don't honestly remember the 3rd set tiebreak and tbh somehow I was expecting Roddick to break Federer at some point during the 4th and take it to 5 sets.

The 2008 final on the other hand almost gave me multiple heart attacks.

well stated. that final had me squirming on the couch on many shots and rallies. after all that "greatest match ever" talk, I purchased the match and have watched it 3 times since...really a fantastic slow grass match.

I'm here Azz and I gave my reasons in the previous thread
Anyway I'll post them here again-
First and foremost-Nadal ALWAYS had the upper-hand in the match.Points that were rallies( and there were several) always favoured Nadal. It wasnt as unpredictable as this year's final, for me atleast.I always felt Nadal was going to come out on top in this match.2009 final started out with a predictable match-up but ended up being as unpredictable as it can get as far as I am concerned.

Second-It wasnt pleasing to see Roger shank or miss routine forehands especially in the first two sets of the match in 08 .

Third-I hate seeing Roger being pinned down to his BH side. Its just NOT what I like to watch no matter how effective it is.

Fourth-Aside from the number of net approaches and decent serving I thought Roger could've done MUCH better strategy-wise in the match. He was flubbing easy volleys, like I said.Andy on the hand did brilliantly tactically and Roger was having to constantly adapt his game.I liked seeing that.Roger's execution was something I wasnt pleased with in the 08 finals

All that said I havent denied that 08 was a great match.I just think Federer and Nadal have done better against each other regardless of the result.I think even this year's AO final was better because they were both more or less on an equal footing going into into the fifth.Neither of them had a glaring upper-hand.

I LOVED the way both Federer and Nadal fought in the 08 final.Especially since I thought the match was going to be over in straight sets.I just dont think it was the best I've seen.
I even consider Fed-Safin a better match and Roger ended up losing that.So its got nothing to do with the loss.I enjoyed Fed vs DP as well.
To each his own Azz.You cant call out someone for having a different preference.
This year's final was a refreshing change from what I had seen in the previous three years and I think both players performed well consistently throughout the match. The quality didnt fluctuate.
Plus, the value attached to the slam made it more special in my eyes.

well it was different for me.I literally tried to sleep off after the second set and got up when my friend called up to tell me that Roger had won the third set.And that was when they were well into the fourth set
I did watch the third set again though.

I agree with this.Anyone who saw that match knows it was more than just a serve fest.Out of the 107 ( I think ) winners that Roger hit,50 were aces but the rest were some really good points.
Same for Andy ( though I cant remember his stats)

08 final literally had me on the edge of my seat...the awesome drama coalesced with the amazing quality of play makes it THE best match of all time.

The only problem was its ending.

I saw the match. In my opinion it was a boring serve fest. Not as many long rallies as the 08 final (that I remember), somehow I knew Roger would pull it out in the end.

I don't see how you can say you knew the outcome of the 08 final the entire time. You can't honestly sit here and tell me that after Fed hit that backhand pass at MP in the 4th you thought "oh well, Fed's just going to lose it in the 5th now". No. The outcome was in the balance all the way until the end really, add to that the impending darkness...forget the drama, let's just talk about the tennis then.

The 08 final, after watching that match, there was a feeling of "I've never seen two guys play tennis as well as these guys are playing it right now" The level was much higher, there were much more long rallies....looking at it now, I don't see how you can put 09 over 08. Obviously it's all perspective, but for me it's not even close. 08 takes the cake.

JBF-I always thought that if the match went to the fifth set Nadal was going to come out on top.He was playing the best tennis I had seen him play on grass and Roger for the first half was playing well below par.
Again,I really liked both the fourth and fifth sets and its a credit to their mental fortitude. But the match as a whole fluctuated in terms of its quality.Watch the game at 7-6 in the fifth.Sums up Roger's epic shanking and missing of forehands in the match.

    The Nadal-Federer match.

At 10-10 in the 5th in the other match, I was already bored and ready for Roddick to inevitably lose.

    I preferred Wimbledon 2008.

Both were matches for the history books with unbelievable performances.

Wimbledon 2008 Nadal defeated Federer, stopped his streak and proved he was really #1 and better than the proclaimed modern GOAT

Wimbledon 2009 Roddick unforced errored gifted an epic match to Federer late in the 5th set 16-14 :( What a way to ruin part of history.
