i hated them both. one was a serve fest..and another was where the quality of tennis was pathetic for the first two sets..

The Roddick/Federer match was incredible fun to watch and kept us all on the edge of our seats, let's face it! I loved it!!

But the Nadal/Federer match...oy. It was the absolute culmination of a most unique and historic relationship that we all knew was bubbling to the top...and to be mixed in with dramatic biblical-like scenes of rain and delays and nightfall in London...yo!!! It was like a perfect match!! And when Nadal fell to the grass, arms spread wide, exhausted and elated, and the all-time great Federer almost cried into the shoulder of McEnroe in an amazing post-match interview...well, I can't think of anything more memorable. For us tennis fans, I think the question "Where were you when Nadal beat Federer at Wimbledon?" will ring true for years to come!

2008 ended in an unforced error too. What a way for Federer to ruin history, right?

oh, for heaven's sakes, guys, I said he "almost" cried....it's not a big deal. We all know the Fed is a very passionate and emotional guy, and that's one of the many things we love about him (yes, many of us Nadal fans are avid Fed fans, too!!). Mac said in an interview later that he realized the Fed was about to cry and he purposely cut the interview short.

But who cares...I'm sorry I mentioned it! It's not the point. The point is this: that match - that Fed/Nadal match - made history in a way the Fed/Roddick match simply couldn't.

Its cool. I am a fed fan but I have never been a fan of his emotional side. What he did at the AO was just pathetic. Anyways sorry about that. I agree Wim 2008 was awesome!

Idiotic analysis like this is one reason I dislike the 2008 Wimbledon final -- some morons like to use it to somehow magically "show" that Nadal is better than Federer (a guy who has out-performed Nadal by almost every significant measure).

2008 was a great final though, but I also agree that it wasn't the greatest final ever. Federer did not play well in the first two sets. 2009 was more traditional grass-court tennis and had a tenser 5th set (which wasn't marred by almost playing in the dark, which was why Federer lost the 2008 Final, j/k).

Maybe it's because I'm a woman, but what he did at the '09 AO only furthered endeared him to me! The Fed is for real!! He really, really, really wants to win and he's one of the most passionate players ever!!! And, thankfully for you big Fed fans, he's deservedly one of the all-time best. :) And even our dear Rafa agrees with that!

You can argue 2009 was better since Roger broke the most important tennis record...won the most GS in history. And in the future, fans will likely to remember it more than 2008.

    Disagree with the last sentence.
Roger winning #15 under the gaze of Rod Laver ,Sampras,Borg,Santana and other greats is as historic as it gets IMO.
You dont see this very often :D

Many people felt 2008 was better mostly because of the dethroning of the reigning Champion in such a drama filled match. A lot of folks thought that this was the end of the Champion and beginning of a new era or something.Anyway, the peundulum swung back this year.
My comms atleast couldnt stop fawning over the 09 match like there was no tomorrow.
2008 was one of the best finals though.I wont dispute that.I just prefer this one.

the longest GS match in history to date in games, and during a final, and longest 5th set ever isnt going to be a all time classic? esp since its federers 15th slam and roddick who is a big enough name.

Is Feddie logic allowed in your thread? If it is, the guy in the grey suit only dominated because he didn't have anyone who 'matched-up' bad. That and the fact that nobody had a tenacious attitude like the current World No. 2! LOL!

Especially since he shows almost no emotion during a match which is when it would make a difference and involve the audience's own feelings or keep them on the edge of their seat instead of have them wonder why for f...'s sake Fed would play that "who cares anyway" routine in the 5th set of a slam. When you look that disinterested during the match, you don't play drama queen AFTER it.

Feddie logic or not. Sampras didnt win a french open. His resume is just as badly pwned as Federer's.

All hail Laver and Borg, the true GOATS! :)

Now as for Borg ... I'm not sure about that either!

i find it funny Azurri went out of his way to paint Federer fans as rabidly delusional yet they actually agree with him because it's the truth.

I wouldn't watch that match for it's high quality as opposed to the Nadal-Fed final. That match had better points and more drama. Come on people, did you REALLY think Roddick was going to beat Fed? Really??

    2008 was better, but don't underestimate 2009.

At one point roddick had roger on the rope at 15-40 in sudden death. Roger clutch serving got him out of the jam. Anything less, Roddick could easily end up as a winner.

    No man should cry

A man is only allowed to cry when either

    -his parents die
    -his dog dies
    -his favourite sports team loses

All men who otherwise cry for reasons not stated in the above are legitimate pussies.

08 was more intense, but had low quality tennis for Nadal/Federer standards. 09 was not as intense, but had higher quality tennis. ;)

The best final though in regards of high quality tennis was the 09 AO final.

I went for the '08 one. Not just because Nadal won :) but also the '09 one got kinda boring as it was just a serving contest, but it was still very very very exciting.

I like Wimbledon 2008 much better because of the quality of the rallies. Nadal-Federer matches are often special because, as they said about Rosewall versus Laver, it's not just the shots, it's the shots off the shots. Both players have exceptional speed and excellent shotmaking ability. So where Federer hits a shot that seems unreachable by any other player, Nadal reaches it and hits it back solidly and often for a winner. It's the same when Nadal hits a potential winner against Federer, Federer gets to the ball where almost no one would and returns it with interest. The rallies are longer and spectacular with these two. It's a great combination of great offense and great defense with these two. To be a bit corny, the irresistible force versus the immovable object.

With Roddick, well his mobility and his groundstrokes aren't nearly of the level of Nadal. His game is his powerful serve and his blasting forehand. Roddick also doesn't return serve as well as Nadal so the rallies tend to be more dull and often there are no rallies at all as Roddick has problems with Federer's serve and Federer may not return Roddick's serve. Federer generally blocks Roddick's awesome serve back and depends on his superior groundstrokes and defensive ability to win the point. It's been a very successful tactic considering the one sided won-lost record between the two. Roddick's volley, even though it is improved is not good enough yet for him to approach the net that consistently. Roddick against Federer is a tough match up for Roddick. Nadal against Federer is a very close match up on most surfaces. The styles make the match and I think the styles of Nadal and Federer make often for great tennis. The thing that makes people say the Roddick-Federer match was great was the closeness of the match. I think the quality of the rallies of the Nadal-Federer 2008 Wimbledon match were much better. I even like the Nadal-Federer 2009 Australian Open match better than the 2009 Roddick-Federer Wimbledon match but you can't these two fairly because it's different surfaces.

Not even debatable! 08 was just an unbelievable level of tennis. AND filled with drama! Finishing at twilight... just really great stuff. 09 was drama filled but very sloppy tennis. Huge serves and not much else. Really Roddick puts away that high backhand volley in the tiebreak, we have a different Wimby champ.
