I figured it was time he had his own thread...

Currently age 20, he's a rising young star from the US (born in Kiev, Ukraine). Jim Courier has said lots of great things about his game and work ethic. Ranked #137 as of 31-Dec-2012.

Kudla is currently playing the Brisbane ATP 250 event and qualified for the main draw beating Berankis and Kunitsyn. Plays Melzer in the 1st round...

Kudla and Melzer are currently playing. Kudla won the first set 6-2.

Melzer bags the 2nd set. Does Kudla have the legs to win a 3rd set for the 4th day in a row?

Wow, haven't heard about this guy as much as Sock or Harrison. He sounds to be just as promising from watching him.

After watching all of Kudla's matches on his way to winning the 75K Charlottesville Challenger in the Fall, I'm impressed with his fitness.

Somehow I don't think fitness will be the deciding factor in this match. I think it will either come down to experience (Melzer) or confidence (Kudla).

Experience wins out in the end. Melzer wins 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in 1hr 46min.

Sock got the ink bcoz he won their boys' finals match in 3 tight sets @USO'10. Kudla is tough as nails, just needs some time to bring the weapons up to damage-inducing level so every match doesn't empty the tank...a bigger serve is first on the needs list.

All I remember about Kudla is him being the victim in one of Federer's best shots in 2012 in Indian Wells, where Federer hits a peRFect dropshot from the baseline after a 10+ shot rally. :)

After a slow start to the 2013 season, Kudla is in the semis of the 125K Dallas Tennis Classic (Dallas 2) Challenger beating Lukas Rosol, Matthias Bachinger and Bobby Reynolds along the way. Great article on his progress here:

    http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/03/14/4702763/young-american-starts-slowly-but.html

What impressed me most was this quote: "My game wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I came in here to the quallies instead of taking a wild card because I wanted to get some matches under my belt, and I’ve started playing better and better. My game can still improve for sure. I’m just happy that I can get these wins against some really good players."

    Kudla plays Petzschner on Saturday...

Good news! I've been focused on IW so I wasn't following this Challenger that has morphed into a near-250 quality event. Thanks for the update!

I've always thought Denis has a bit more upside potential than Sock (questionable stamina) and Harrison (not as gritty). Hope he keeps it going and we see him go on the dirt in Houston and Europe and get that ranking up high enough to play the majors regularly.

Kudla beat Petzschner 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the finals! Hoping he goes all the way in Sunday's final.

The USTA website should have a live stream going...

Good result, I saw him lose in the last round of qualies to Smyczek 6-4 in the third in a real tight battle. Crushing loss but he rebounded nicely. He's very very talented, smart and feisty too making up for moderate physicality.

If by "physicality" you mean physical stature, I'd agree that at 5ft 11", Kudla has moderate physicality. But if you mean physical fitness or athleticism, I'd disagree as I've seen Kudla play many matches over the years, and he's an amazing athlete. If he didn't play tennis I could see him being a professional in another sport. I've met him in person at the Charlottesville Challenger, and he's absolutely ripped. He's also ambidextrous which is why his backhand is so darn good. Amazing physical specimen!

There's no live stream of the Dallas 2 Final, but last I checked the score, Melzer won the first set 6-4, and Kudla won the 2nd 6-2.

Melzer wins 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. While Kudla lost this final, it should do a lot for his confidence and his ranking should be back up in the top 140!

He has very few points to defend until July, so hopefully, he can make some waves at the Challenger and even ATP 250 level in the coming months.

Top 100 is right around the corner!!!

man that third set was a disappointing performance. he needs to learn how to step it up in such situation. he just checked out mentally early in that set and could never recover.

To update this thread - Kudla reached a new career ranking of 90 on July 8th following a quarterfinal appearance at Queens and a 2nd round appearance at Wimbledon.

Nice to see the young American making some strides in his career and hopefully his ranking will keep edging upwards as the North Amercian hardcourt season gets underway!

I actually like his game a lot. May not have the weapons though he could develop them over time. No huge weaknesses either though so there's a solid foundation. Hoping to see him develop in the next few years.

i do wonder why you don't hear too much about him.

I've always wondered that myself. It seemed like the media always favored Harrison the past few years. I suppose since he moved up the rankings quicker than Kudla and Sock.

Regardless, I hope that Kudla can continue to improve. He is my favorite young American player. He has a nice game. :)

How so?? Kudla has a better, steadier backhand, but Williams has the bigger game. Bigger serve, bigger forehand. You need weapons at the top level. Kudla doesnt really have any.

Does anyone know how Denis is doing? I saw he lost in qualies at Winston-Salem - but I guess he go the lucky-loser ticket into Tourny. Is he not qualifying for USO?

He lost today 4 and 4 on two breaks...only won 25% of return points.

I think he is direct entry into USO. He got well into top 100 at cut-off date. Delbonis, who is now #57 but earned much of that in Hamburg after the cut-off, is top seed in the qualies. Most of Kudla's points putting him in the top 90 came earlier on the grass.

I watched his entire match in his loss at Cincy qualies to Zemjla, nice game good shots but lost the big points when it counted. I don't see him ever winning a big one but could have a long career.

Too bad that he lost today. Seems like he's had a tough stretch. He really needs to improve his serve and, apparently, return game if he wants to really break through. He has a really nice game and very good quickness, but he seems to get stream rolled by big hitters. His match up today was favorable, too bad he was unable to pull through.

Berankis reminds me a lot of Kudla with one exception...much bigger serve. He regularly hits 130mph when he's healthy.

I think he has a nice all around feel for the game and like watching him. If he could develop even one solid weapon I think he could have some success. Not Top Ten or anything but a good career.

Not sure why Kudla was an underdog against some guy named Vesely that I've never heard of in my life.

Maybe you've never bet on either...?
Vesely came up from a pretty successful junior career and is now, at 20, in the top 100. Rankings wise, Kudla is lower than Vesely, hence underdog. 2R is also Kudla's best result at USO.

Wow, J P Smith looks really really bad, Im watching it live on the aussie open stream. His serve is good but his strokes are neither consistent or powerful. He hits like 2 unforced errors a game.

Agree, I just saw one game. but he hit one forehand 15 feet over the baseline and next one in the bottom of the net. LOL. What is this ? and then he hits a serve at 212 KPH. It might be that new racket. he switched from Pure drive 2012 to this Aeropro drive. I have NO idea why ??

Pity Kudla lost, but Mayer is just too experienced right now.

I have heard he is a very hard worker and he has a decent game for modern tennis but needs more power on serve and groundies.

He is 21, so still young. Will he ever be a top 20/30 player?

It was a tough draw as Florian has played well at the start of '14.

You are spot on about Kudla's weaknesses. Can he improve? We'll see! I like his chances for top 50 by end of '14 and that #20-30 later, particularly if he can stay healthy.

Tough, tough 5 set loss by Kudla to Feliciano Lopez in the 1st round of the Aussie Open after having 3 match points. If he keeps playing this well though, he should do well on the ATP tour in 2015!
