I'm happy for Baker. He's had a real tough time of it in his career, one setback after another.

I wish him all the best in his opening round match against Rosol.

Donald Young lost in the final round of the qualifiers!

    Donald Young (USA) 4 6 3
    Jamie Baker (GBR) 6 1 6

The Donalds current ranking is 189! Oh my! 2012 highest was 38!

Many people, including McEnroe, Gilbert, and others have suggested a change of coach. Has it occurred to anyone that there may not be any upside to Young? That this is as good as he'll ever be? I think it's a plausible scenario.

Young is 75-125 player right now (as far as long terming)

he can shoot higher like he is now, and can make a run on some hard courts to get back down, but without coaching change his game wont ever break that bubble

i exchanged many tweets with both pMac and Gilbert, both of them predicting Blake to win the match, and i argued that he is the better player now, mostly because of his youth, spin and shot selection. He lost to a good player in the final Q, a good start to 2013, but low on the prospect list for USA right now. His serve will be his weapon this year. pMac was not too happy seeing Young beat Blake.

Russell is a very winnable match. Both guys should be happy with that draw.

I'm watching. wow Donald self-broke himself twice by double-faulting on break point. After the second one he threw his racquet.

(I like him but he is a head case at this point)

Things might work out for DY if he breaks here to win the set. At least he would start the 3rd off serving.

    Edit: 15-40, dbl break point

Well, DY blew quite a few chances, especially in Russell's last 2 svc games. Had him 15-40 when he was down 6-5 in the 3rd, dumped a routine backhand ROS into the net, then lost the next 3 pts to lose the match, I believe.

He also had him 15-40 when DY was up 5-4, didnt convert any of those.

DY does not have world class backhand. Opponents pick on it. Than DY runs around it too much, leaving forehand corner open. Also too many unforced errors on BH.

Young reminds me a lot of Blake, like a younger Blake. I don't think we will ever see him compete in a grand slam quarter final

Another back and forth match between DY and Russell. Multiple break in the 1st set, multiple breaks so far in the 2nd.

DY lost the 1st set 6-4, is up a break for the 2nd time in the 2nd set, 3-2.

Edit: DY up 2 breaks in the 2nd, 5-2, serving for the set now.

He was in this position last week in San Jose, this time 2 breaks in hand. Let's see if he closes it out.

DY just broke again, after being up a break, to go up 5-3 in the 3rd. Serving for the match now.

If he closes it out, it'll be a big monkey off his back. I think he's lost his last 3-4 matches against Russell.

Edit: See saw continues. Back on serve 5-4 DY, 3rd set.

    See saw continues.

Russell broke to go up 6-5 in the 3rd and serve for the match.

    DY broke back, 6-6, tiebreak.

Well, its over. See saw match ended up with a see saw TB. DY was up 2 mini breaks, serving 5-2 in the TB. Then hit a double fault to start a string of losing 5 pts in a row to go down match pt 6-5 in the TB. Russell threw in a double fault serving at 7-6 in the TB, then DY won the next two pts to close it out 9-7 in the TB.

Hopefully he gets a good draw in the MD, Steve Johnson would be good.

Haven't seen Donald play since US OPEN.

Haven't seen malisse play in years.

Can't judge from statistics because anyone can beat anyone.

Plus people have good and bad streaks.

If malisse is any where near is prime performance then he wins in straight sets.

They probably had inside information cause Malisse retired down 5-1 in the 1st set.

Sets up an interesting match up with Nishikori.

    DY getting a little momentum!

Did you notice that my boy was a match away from playing DY and probably would've if he didn't get sick.

You going to IW's this year?

    Nishikori will be tough.

Actually, I didnt. Just checked the results. He's def been racking up some good results lately. I saw he recently straight setted that Spanish guy he lost to last year.

I got tix for IW, but I waited too long and Sat day session was sold out. Have Fri & Sun day session tix tho. Do u guys have an extra Sat ticket I can buy off you? Not looking forward to dealing with the scalpers.

Might have an extra Sat ticket, good chance. Just have to see if all the family members actually make it there that day.

Huge for DY to win 2 rounds in main draw of 500 at this point. About to start with Nishi. That will be tough.

    Still no streams eh?

    No way?

I go away and don't check the boards for a few days and I come back to find DY winning matches.

    How can this be?

He won today down at Delray against Bogomolov. It was actually a very entertaining match. His entourage was sitting right behind me...so I heard the play by play.

This guy really does have some wheels (it appears almost impossible to hit a ball by him) and every once in awhile breaks out a serve that is pretty damn heavy.

....then lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to Munoz-De La Nava in straight sets. Ouch.
Not a strong look when you can't even qualify for a 250.

The week of February 27, 2012 - a year ago - Donald Young was at #38 in the world. Now he's hovering at #200.
    Hard to understand.

I watched this 2nd round qualies match and what I saw was negativity. It was only the second point of the match when he was called for a double fault and his body language and attitude was affected. In my opinion, letting that call bother him made him play a low quality game. He lost his serve at love or 15 without his opponent having to do anything. I don't know if he has always been negative on the court or it is a result of having a really long bad spell. You can have all the talent in the world but if your head isn't right you will not live up to your potential.

He, along with Melanie Oudin, should serve as cautionary tales to any future American stars who are prematurely hyped. (I'm talking to you, Sloane Stephens!)
