donald gets grumpy when facing better players
analysts making some good points. saying the donald may be too heavy and is slow getting to shots
His footwork was abysmal today. Not like a professional at all. I would have him grab a jumprope and do 10 sets of 500 every day.
that was really terrible. Seppi did his thing but The Donald is a mess
The Donald is just not playing at this best right now! Maybe personal issues?
after the great season he had last year , things have gone backwards quick
A good season, maybe a great season for him. That is the crux of The Donald enigma.
Is Mardy Fish officially working with the Don?
Mardy wouldn't do that to himself, would he???
I've heard he's loosely overseeing things in the Fritz camp. If so, a wiser move.
He was sitting behind mom during the match today. There were plenty of other seats available.
Blnt Donald, hopefully he can rebound and get some 250's + 500 wins
A much, much needed win for the Don today. Even though Stevie so obviously tanked the match, a win is a win.
Young Johnson? Reminds me of my adolescence!
Good for the Donald! Steve Johnson always seen like he had upper hand against the Donald!
The Donald is out of the gates with a win, interesting to see if he can go deep in this US Clay Court Championship.
What is wrong with this guy ??? he loses to Tiafoe in this challenger just now...... he had 3 games in which he goes down 0-40 on his serve and comes back to Hold.. and then finally in 4th game he goes down 0-40 again and comes back to deuce. then ad out and Double fault to give away the match to Tiafoe.... LOL
Absolutely terrible end to the match with a lot of negative body language from Young for sure. He is being leapfrogged by the younger generation before reaching his full potential.
I have seen him practice and he often shows great athleticism in practice and when joking around. Why not in matches? Do nerves affect his footwork? Doesn't make sense that he is not athletic when it counts most.
Nice win today. Def Fognini in Nice
Follows it up with a bad loss. Tough to figure out.
That means that Donald can't keep the high level of play day in and day out. so that means he is not at that greatness level like top 10 players can produce same very High level of tennis every time they step on the court. but those next tier players can't do it. they either don't have what it takes or their body doesn't cooperate
Foginini is the "X" factor in this riddle. The guy is a pinhead schizoid who barely won half his service points and just 4 receiving points in the deciding set. Compare that to his first set win...71% on serve and a respectable 35% on returns.
Fabio is the moodiest of players. Sometimes he's up for it, sometimes he's not and, as you've just described, his mood can vary from set to set, game to game. He is consistent only in his inconsistency!
Senor Nadal says, "Si!"
He came through qualifying and then beat Fogini in three sets, so I'm guessing that he just didn't have the legs, and as a result, the focus. Not to say that he would have won anyway, but he probably could have done better than getting beat down 3 and 0.
DY is still here after all these years. Now almost 27 (how did that happen) and ranked around 80 (I always considered about 105 the magic rankings number since it gets a player automatically into Slams). Decent wins here and there along with bad losses - but just can't string anything together. I think he "gets" the grind of the tour at this level and he could maintain a 50-100 ranking for the next couple of years if he's willing to commit to fitness and not get frustrated, and maybe he can have a few more "big" moments (and at this point all that means is a decent upset of higher ranked player, a decent run at a Slam (3rd or 4th Round), a final or win in a smaller tournament, even just a SF at a 500 (like he did in DC once).
IMO, his story is absolutely nothing unusual. There's heavily hyped players (sometimes multiple) of every generation who don't pan out. He's a true journeyman now as the focus of the media is the next generation, including Tiafoe.
Harrison hasn't even achieved DY's career (though he is nearly 3 years younger). Not as heavily hyped as DY once was, but he was definitely a "thing" and there was talk of him taking over as America's next great player.
DY has drawn the veteran Gabashvili in 1R. He has had a dreadful start to '16, making this match a pick-em. Good Donald could win easily but it will be a tussle if both play to potential.
Donald losing to Gabashville, is that really that bad of loss ? Temirez has been super hot last 2 years and on clay, he feels more comfortable than Donald
how come this thread has 51 pages? am i missing something?
Agree. Very powerful ball striker with great energy. Definitely a lot hungrier and grittier than Donald. A bit of a man versus boy scenario, unfortunately.
No, it's not that bad of a loss. But, on the other hand, it gets DY nowhere. We'll see if he can do anything the rest of the year.
Gabash had a 2-13 record since Sydney, his only tournament this year with multiple victories. It was a toss-up match on clay, easily DY's worst surface. The first set was competitive but DY went away after that, making it a bad loss in my eye.
Qualifies for Queens with a nice straight sets win over Tiafoe
Good for DY, for qualifying for Queens (including a revenge win over Tiafoe) and then winning his first round. He'll be up to around 68 at the least. He's a true journeyman now - still solidly top 100, still auto entry into Slams. Some decent results, followed by poor results, followed by decent results, etc. No really outstanding results, but, hey, he's making a living playing tennis. Does Harrison still have a chance to get into the Top 70-100 for an extended period?
Hope Donald gets back to the 40s in the rankings so no qualifying to get into tournament again!
Ryan, I not seen him play much on TV lately! Last time I say his ranking was around the 120ish. He is one extreme streaky player! He can play tough in the first set and maybe win the set against a top twenty player but them, it falls apart his game! If there is a third set; it usually at 1-2 against Ryan in the set! Never seem him make it past the first round in a major since his initiate tour year or two. He was hot then and media promoted him as U.S. top 10 hopeful! I think he was 18-19years old. His game went down hill from there!
Current Ryan Harrision rank is 152!
maybe not enough playstation time.... or Solinco isn't paying him enough money
This is his best effort on grass since '11, when he won 3 qualie rounds and a 1R match at Eastbourne.
That being said, an upset of RBA later today is a reach. His biggest wins during that '11 streak were vs Pospisil and a very young Denis Kudla.
he won a match
I think The Donald trying hard to get his ranking up and go into the main Wimbledom draw without qualifying! I think if he reaches 60, it a done deal!
Main draw cutoff is top 100 or so and it's based on rankings six weeks out from the tournament start date. The only impact DY's results can have are on the US Open and its lead up series.
The Donald needs to get serious, maybe James Blake can coach him to a better ranking
I don't think The Donald can afford Jakes Blake as a full time coach bout maybe part time is possible until he gets into top 30 and gets some bigger endorsements to pay James for full time! The Donald needs a professional agent to other then his parents to get endorsements! That where the money is!
Good first round Wimbledon win. Very important - not only because of the points and money, but because he has solid opportunity in the second round playing 32 seed Pouille. It's not like the seed in that section is Djokovic or Fed or Wawrinka- someone who DY would have little chance of beating.
Great that The Donald made it to the second round of Wimbledom! Just maybe he got some inspiration from the Great Marcus Willis run! Very inspiration, from teaching pro to playing Rodger Federer in Centre Court in this year's Wimbledom!
The Donald is now 61st in the world! Slow move back up the ranking to the 40s!
Who the heck is Donald Young and why do people care about some 200 ranked pro?
Convincing win over Donaldson, 1&3, at Newport. Has the day off Tuesday and awaits the Becker/Kozlov winner.
Somewhat shocking win for the Donald today. Was it legit, or did Stevie tank? The bigger question is, is this the big turnaround in the career of the Don? Will this win be the catalyst that catapults his career to previously unreached heights?
The Donald is grassGOATing!
The Donald a live and well on Grass Court Newport, R.I.
Very good win no matter what
DY into the semi-finals at Newport- Tennis Hall Fame!
