I bet Gulbis beats Nadal if he plays him this year.
This could happen very soon, like in less than 72 hours.
About to serve for it
Nishikori test to pass first, not easy if not impossible task...
Nishikori is as up and down as Gulbis. Of course, Nishikori is more likely to be injured.
You know The Ernests...could be match of the tourney (hard to beat Cilic/Robredo) or could turn ugly. Let's hope for the former!
A very earnest journey through the draw at Madrid so far, without much spotlight (thanks to teammate Thieminator!). Easy win again today to set up a QF vs Ferrer/Isner winner.
Yeah great year for Gulbis so far. The Dog and now Cilic in straights
It's Ferrer tomorrow. He's 0-2, both HC and the most recent was indoor @Stockholm (Ernests' very favorite place!:twisted, last fall where he lost in three.
Should be a better outcome tomorrow!
I think Gulbis will take this in 2 or 3 sets, Ferrer has been sketchy the past 6 months or so and if Gulbis brings the heat, a little Spaniard will stay out of the kitchen!
Even with a loss to Ferrer, Ernests will reach a career high ranking of #17. With Delpo's injury, that should be good enough to secure a Top 16 seed for the FO.
To my understanding, that and 1.7 € will get you on the Paris Metro...aren't the seeds randomly assigned after #1 and #2?
Gulbis has a good chance of winning Nice this week, which would bring him back to 17. If he can then make a good run in France he might be inside the top 16 for wimbledon. Gulbis really needs to start playing well in the best of 5 sets though.
He'll have to tighten it up to survive...he was off and on today from what T_F_V posted in the Nice thread. Besides, going deep is risky with the quick turnaround, not that Ernie needs any more excuses for questionable weekend play.
I think he's reached his limit. He can't improve much from here on out. He's simply too streaky and inconsistent like many other players who are on the verge of making the top 15.
In a few years time he will just be remembered as a journeyman, with wasted talent imo...
Wasted talent? Yes, of course with a now six-year gap since teasing us with a QF appearance @RG at the age of 19.
Journeyman? Well, the "journey" is what the thread title describes as he attempts to separate himself from the more pejorative term he has earned with his mid-career slump. I doubt most of us will ever think of him as a journeyman though. He's a lot more interesting than the run-of-the-mill players most associated with that term. One good run at a slam this year will totally erase that tag and he's certainly capable of it now that Thiem Gulbinator is revving up their engines!
I agree. In bo3 tournaments he has performed quite well and consistent this year. However not it's time to show he can also perform well in the slams. Hoping for a deep run, at least a QF, in one of the 3 remaining slams this year.
I like gulbis, so i hope what you say happens, but i wouldnt bet money on it...
If he only reworked his forehand to make it consistent and powerful. Why the hell he cant if guys of his size such as berdych, Raonic, Anderson, Isner all have good forehands!!!???
isner has a very good FH if he has time to set up. Problem for him is to get in Position.
ouch... he loses his serve in the 3rd against tursunov... and his racquet loses its shape. :-?
(lovely smashing, by the way, but...)
Nice work breaking to stay in the match.
Third set tiebreakers are fun!
Well done the Earnests
Some good points to grab as he should be able to reach the final or win the tournament (then relax/party and fail in R1 at the French  )
Inspired by your avatar...BTW, the lines to your av always remind me of Dali's "The Persistence of Memory"...melt-down frame much like melting clocks.
Good mental strength of Ernie! Now on to beat montanes!
However might be better to lose now for RG.
Mr. Gulbis trolling people this year..
Love to see The Ernests in the O2! It helped push Stanislas to new heights, so who knows???
me too ! i'm sure the guys who made this perrier ad (you saw the whole picture, right ?) thought about the painting when doing it...
ernests' racquet destruction was slightly more brutal...
but regardless of his outbursts, his fighting spirit has improved a lot lately !
and #9 at the race is good ! now what he needs is to perform well at the slams...
no, I have not seen it...might not have been a US market ad. Care to share the whole picture?
here it is... do you want it with ice cubes ?!
and fellow ads:
(awesome melted disco-ball !)
I like the surfboards and boom-box too!
Good one, Ernests trolling the race top10 indeed
Good job Ermests! Keep it up!
Gulbis has quite a good draw at Roland Garros.
1st round: Kubot
2nd round: Benneteu
3th round: Stepanek/ Youzhny
4th round: Federer
F: Nadal
If he wants to end in the top 10 he'll at least needs to make it to the 4th round, with this kinda draw. Federer is a bit hot and cold nowadays and doesn't seem to like big hitters anymore. So if Gulbis can maintain a high level there might be possibillitys there. Berdych in the quarters on clay is also not impossible. Would be a great tournament if he could make a semi final here! Although I do think the 4th round will be where he exits.
Gulbis will play the final in Nice against the winner of Simon/Delbonis. He's never lost a final before. It's also his first final on clay though.
Slight reason for concern: I've noticed Gulbis has really struggled with his second serve lately. Even in his easy 6-0, 6-3 SF win, he only won 37% second serve points.
Luckily, he's extremely dominant when he gets his first serve in.
Fixed that draw analysis for you!
Gulbis vs Delbonis for the Nice title.
2nd final of the season for both...The Ernests should think of moving to the South of France; first Marseille now Nice!
Should be a good one!
love it stringer tom
theim will kick out nadal in 5
unless ginepri wins, then he has no chance!
Ginepri GOATed Tallahassee Challenger...oddly enough my HS alma mater song from Tallahassee Leon HS starts with these lyrics:
"The red clay hills of Tallahassee
Harbor memories dear"...
Good omen, no?
Here is to hoping Gulbis finally gets to a 4R in a major again.
Gulbis' draw is pretty good, I would love to see a 4th round match against Federer, with Federer winning of course.
Unless it's cool/damp (1st week that is the weather) - then don't count Gulbis out. I was in Rome the day he beat Fed in those conditions.
Gulbis just walked right through Montanes today - just too much power. 26 wins already - last yr he didn't get his 26th win until St. Petersburg in Sept.
Why would you want to see an old man beat our dear Ernie?
Ernie to the SFs!
I've never lost a final either. A bit of misleading stat as well, don't you think ?
I used to be very hot on this guy back in 2008. Now I'm with those that think him mostly a very talented clown. Which is not a bad thing to be from a spectator point of view.
Except he's actually played in and won 5 more ATP-level finals than you have.
Good point. I did hear about the cooler weather for RG this year. I'm not counting Gulbis out, but Fed is my favorite player and I always want to see him win. How amazing would it be if he won Roland Garros at the age of 32 and completed a double career GS? Obviously, it's unlikely but it would be great to see.
Gulbis plays an aggressive game with plenty of power. I saw most of the match vs. Montanes and it was a great display of power tennis. That's why I like Gulbis, his game is great to watch and he's entertaining.
A 4th round loss in a major after playing so well this year would be pretty disappointing :-|. But this thread is about Gulbis, so I hope he plays well and brings his A game! We don't even know if he will make it that far though, pretty streaky player Ernesto is.
