Unrealistic expectations? With regards to Ernie? Never! :D

Seriously: I expect him to play aggressive tennis tonight. I also expect Monfils to push a lot – and win the match.

It's okay, it's all part of Ernesto's plan to peak for the 5th slam - the real 5th one - that is Marseille.

    Ernesto's generosity knows no bounds.

Decisions decisions! Shall Ernests attempt a second title run in Marseille or a third one in Delray???

As the elitist that he is, Ernests decided to go for the titel in the Marseille tournament, that features three players from the Top 10 and eight (!) players from the Top 20, instead of the title in the Delray Beach tournament, that features, well, Anderson and Tomic. :D

Look out, Ernie made it out of the first round.
Which means he will be dangerous for Gasquet... unless he parties tonight, or chokes, or tanks tomorrow ;)

Did not help two weeks ago when he beat Halys, another Frenchman, before losing to Ricky 4&4.

Yea I was kidding Gulbis has all sorts of issues. I think it's too late for him, but he can still get hot and take out a good player like Gasquet.

The one-match winning streak trend continues...played OK into the TB vs Ricky today and fades in the second. 11 aces in the first set!

To be fair, losing to Monfils and twice to Gasquet in relatively competitive fashion is a decent step forward for our main man. Although Gasquet just lost Kyrgios with an embarrassing scoreline...

Two years ago he won this tournament, beating Gasquet 3&2 in the SF and JWT in the final 6&4. The magic continued through Nice (title) into the RG QFs before djovic started his downward spiral. One-match win streaks are now his specialty.

Now I'm beginning to doubt you as a true Ernests fan. That was a Semi-final, not a measly quarter-final.

But on a serious note, considering how poorly he's played since his 2014 French success, losing close matches to competent players is a huge step up from losing to bozos.

No, I meant he played well through the QFs, beating fedr and berd back to back in R16 and QFs before his downward spiral began at the hands of djovic. Grass was dismal, USO series blah and he was Thieminated at USO. The nadir was losing to The Spoiled Princess that fall in Russia. From there, winning a single match was a test. IIRC, he didn't win consecutive matches until Montreal and the epic choke vs djovic killed that run.

I'm probably masochistic to keep glued to his ups and mostly downs but I'll always cheer on for the Latvian Lavamelt. It would be great for the game if he ever reached his true potential.

He must be straight in to main draw at IW and Miami. He's currently #71 with little to no points gained since their cutoff dates.

Ahhh, Indian Wells! One of Gulbis' worst matches and one of his best matches fought in defeat here in the course of two years...the IW'11 debacle vs The Machine 1.0 was pure fugly; the IW'13 clash vs The Wounded Healing Bull was a classic!

Which shall we have today vs GGL???

I was at the match on Friday and Gulbis looked terrible, spraying balls out of the court in Sureshsian fashion.

It wasn't a surprise because I was there earlier in the week and watched him practicing with a player from UCLA. He looked terrible in practice, too.

Who is coaching him now? I saw some young guy on the court talking to him during his practice, but no sign of Gunter.

His name is Pjotrs Necajevs, but I doubt he's his new coach. He's a former player and a childhood buddy of Ernests and probably just filled in for Günter (who's not in IW apparently, I didn't see him at Thiem's matches either).

I think it's obvious that Ernie needs to take some time off to let his wrist injury heal. It was clearly bothering him in Marseille and here again. If you consider that it's been a problem since last August it's pretty obvious that this is a serious issue. He ain't gonna recover his game if he can't practice his shots properly. I have no idea what he's doing, really (I usually have no idea what Ernie's doing and why he's doing it. :D But even more so at the moment. :p)

The fretful journey continues on Wednesday in Miami vs a known opponent in The Colonel of the one-handed backhand Russian brigade. The Etnests trails in the head to head 4-3 and has lost the last three matches, all on HCs. Sadly, I feel this trend will continue tomorrow.:(

The only positives for Ernie is that he doesn't have to defend any points till his 2nd round at the French Open.
