This is not a thread to discuss Jolly's level or past deeds. Constructive and positive comments only please.
So far he's winning the bet.

When is your next match Jolly?

    darkblue,
It doesn't matter what Jolly's level is. This isn't a thread about his level or character. Please leave it out of this discussion.

It seems to me that unless you can persuade Jolly to amend the rules of the bet to set a minimum number of matches he has to complete, he has already won the bet.

I would have expected better results from someone who can hit and serve like that. Especially considering the only win is against someone with no rating...

    (no offense)

Of course, I would have probably been bageled by all of them :D

i'm not worried about losing the bet because jolly's going to suddenly stop playing tourneys. i concluded a long time ago that jolly didn't take this bet to win a measly $100. if he was in it for the money -- he wouldn't be entering these tournaments which usually cost $50 or $60 a pop, plus the cost of gas, the cost of stringing 19 racquets and more importantly the time involved. i have no doubt that he wants to play and more importantly has confidence in his game.

in fact a little birdie tells me that his next match is this weekend but he wound up with a bad draw facing the #2 seed. the guy looks like a very solid player but tennis is all about matchups and a big serve and forehand can get you pretty far.

good luck jolly! give em hell and play your game. please share your experiences if you have time.

J011y plays to win and that's why he has gathered my respect. He works hard and has been valuable poster here at TTW and we should support his tournament play.

    Go J011y!

i agree, there's no way he would blow off a season of tennis to win a $100 bet. and of course him entering another one already proves that point. and a little birdy?? dude, do you have spys on the guy?! lol.

Yes it did unfortunately. I reported the thread (nobody in particular - just generally) to DireDesire but asked him to just get rid of any off topic posts. I guess he chose to just delete the thread. Can't blame him really.

I think there are enough people who aren't vested into the JOlly debate who want to know what happens so hopefully third times the charm.

I hope you don't mind tfm1973 that I started this thread. As far as I'm concerned, consider it your original post.

Looking forward to the next report J011y. Good luck.

IMHO, matches against non-rated players don't count.

Actually Cindy, the people who took the pledge, at least from what I saw, stuck to it. Those who didn't...did not.

And I'd like to clear up one thing...so everyone is absolutely crystal clear...

I have not, at any moment, posted Jolly's name or personal information. Period.

I have met him, so I do know his name, as he knows mine as well.

    Why wouldn't they count?

I see you're from overseas, so perhaps you don't realize that only people who play leagues get published NTRP ratings. If someone isn't rated, all it means is that they don't pay leagues.

So, some very highly skilled players, who stick to just open tournaments, are not rated.

And, on the other end, players just starting out, who haven't really gotten started in leagues, are also not rated.

Yup, seven man draw, and Jolly faces the #2 seed (he seems to attract #2 seeds a lot!).

I suppose that is better than getting the #1 seed, right?

    Mtommer,

Nice work to keep this thing on track (and to DireDesire). There are certain members of TT that can't seem to keep it clean even when you post things like this:

"This is not a thread to discuss Jolly's level or past deeds. Constructive and positive comments only please."

They just can't help themselves.. :)

I am looking forward to the next J011y report. He is putting it all on the court. I also support his tournament play. Love to see that passion, fire and desire!! Someone has to do it I am too darn old and broken down..

    Gooooo J011y.

    Hey Topaz,

There are others that play only "house" leagues and ladder tourneys. One of the best male players in my area plays very few USTA events or leagues. It is clear he is a 5.0 or better since he has won our Muny Open many times.. beating DI players along the way.

Exactly...just because someone doesn't have a rating doesn't mean they aren't a worthy opponent. Just means that they don't play leagues. And for players 5.0 and up, there really aren't any leagues available to them anyway.

    Topaz,

One of our local clubs is also creating a series of open (CASH) events. Players are coming quite a drive to get to these.. The last one had some outstanding talent.

In a lot of other countries all players are required to have a rating (assigned by the federation) to play. Tournaments are set up by rating so you don't have situations where a person who is just starting to play can enter a tournament with 5.0+ players.

My club used to do this, too! It was a 3 tournament series, with one tournament held once per month in June/July/August. This one was USTA affiliated, but also a cash tournament, so it always had a really great draw. It was so much fun watching those guys play. The director didn't hold them last summer, though...not sure why.

Ah, so a different situation from here in the US, where Open now means...open to all?

Did you ever play any of these? There was a gal who used to post here, Julieta, who spoke very highly of tournaments in France that sounded like they were set up as you describe.

A guy who used to be my coach when I was young used to go every summer when he was a college student in America. I have always wanted to go myself but now I am too old. My coach was an Aussie and he said he would get a round the world ticket, go home during Christmas and Europe in the summer.

It's prediction time again. Tonight Jolly plays a solid, match tough 4.5 rated player. Let's go with a 6-3, 6-2 loss for Jolly. Let's see what happens.

I wonder if Jolly's considered playing a USTA 4.0 league (in addition to open tourneys) to get some real 4.0 experience under his belt. He'd probably move up to being a real 4.5 after a year or so.

What is the record of the 4.5 he's playing tonight?

I thought he mentioned somewhere that there isn't very much in the way of league play around him and that Opens were more plentiful. I could be wrong on that though.

You know, again, I wish that he would come on here and explain why he doesn't do that. I would think he'd jump at the chance for more (and less expensive) matches. By now, I would think he would see that he'd also get plenty of competition, too. Nothing but a win/win from my point of view. *shrug*

Well, I think we all know where Jolly is located, right? And there are a *ton* of leagues in that area (as there are in most metropolitan areas).

In 2009, Long Island Region (a fact he does not hide on this board) had 15 4.0 teams, 12 4.5 teams, and 7 5.0 teams. (Wow...that is highly unusual, not only to *have* a 5.0 league, but to have 7 teams there. I've never seen that before...last time my area had a 5.0 league I think there were only 2 teams.)

His area does also seem to have a plentiful amount of opens, though many seem to have very small draws. Kind of surprising given the competition and cost of indoor courts, especially in his area.

    Anyone have the result?

    12-7 (63%) is a good strong record for a 4.5... probably playing down from a 5.0

^^ limited sample but Jolly is a 4.0 based on his 2-6, 6-7, and 4-6 sets against 4.5's.
3.5's would not sniff a game against 4.5's.

^^^Agree, and many of us said that a long time ago.

Looks like he is still starting slow, too, which I can personally relate to. Played a match this morning, and for me, it feels like it takes 2-4 games for me to 'settle in'. Actually made me think about this thread while I was in the middle of my match!!!

Evidently, I have a focus problem as well!

    J-Man,

I know you have a coach, but............I want to see you do well, and I think I see a pattern. Namely, you start slowly but then play really well in the second set.

Knowing (and sharing, to some degree) your aversion to the cold, and as a Man of Medicine knowing with certainty that the body simply WILL NOT perform at its very best without a proper warm up, may I again suggest (but maybe you didn't read it in the other thread):

    1. Buy proper cold weather gear and learn to wear it outside of tennis matches first. I know you don't like the 'feel' of it. Neither did I at first, but now I don't leave home without it (especially when there's 8" of snow on the ground, like today!)

    2. Get there WAY early and be sure you have a complete warm up, including at least 15-20 mins on the bike and a good stretch as well as warm up hit to get the feel for the courts.

    3. Read "Winning Ugly" for some great tips to help you get off to a strong start in every match. A quick question: What is your first serve % in the first sets, vs. the second sets you've played so far? I bet I can guess. :)

    Good luck!
