I think I have improved over the past year. I now beat the pushers consistently and that's a mile marker for me. I think I can move up a quarter of a point on the NTRP scale.

So all of the rackets in your bag are Volkls? Look forward to seeing you again sometime in Nash Vegas. If you have not hit with BHBH in a while he is hitting better than ever. His new secret weapon could be scary.

Thanks to Bolt for training me to develop a consistent topspin cross-court FH that routinely drives my opponent out of the court. Been working with Coach MacDonald on a more penetrating BH slice. Now I just need to add a few MPH to my serve, I will break the NTRP 4.0 barrier in no time!

(The elliptical machine at the YMCA helps too.)

Not a bad result against a really solid 4.5

    I still think Jolly is a 4.0 like I originally stated... not a 3.5

What did Gilbert say about the first few games again? did he say take them easy, get those serves in, and play percentages?

I love it. The quality of your forehand (depth, spin, and consistency) is the biggest difference I saw a few months back. Your 1HBH, and especially the slice, was always a strength, Sir Slice a Lot!

And Bolt certainly is a fine role model for a good topspin forehand. The guy has a MONSTER shot. :)

Yes. And advised to 'ease into' more aggressive hitting to smaller targets as the motor gets running a bit. ;)

I try to challenge myself to put 3/4 first serves in the box for the first couple of games on my own service and to make EVERY return on the return games. The pressure this creates on opponents, ie no 'freebies' on the one serve is cumulative and tremendous.

tfm made a very good point that bthese tournaments will cost him well over $100 to play in so tbh there aint much point in him only playing 4 matches

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^It occurs to me, do these tournaments not have 'back draws' or consolation matches? BHBH

Surely a back draw or consolation draw would not count for this bet that would be rather unfair

I do this as well. I think of it as 'finding my range'... 'dialing myself in', etc.

I used to lose a bunch of early free points and usually my first service game by going for too much.

Agreed! This should be for main draw matches only.

Hummm.....well there's only one winner in any tournament, but lots of good tennis played. I'm not sure what the bet included, but either way I was just curious. :) BHBH

Of course backdraw should count, as they are all official open tourny matches.

None have had back draws, perhaps because of the small draw size?

Even in National tournaments, lots of peeps tend to not stick around for consolation draws. You would think, for the price of the tourny, they'd want as many matches as possible!

I suppose that would be up to TFM and Jolly to decide?

This is excellent advice by BHBH. This is also mentioned in Brad Gilbert's book "Winning Ugly." Gilbert mentioned that the first few times he played Lendl and Lendl was only serving/hitting at 75% (powerwise) in the first few service games only to turn it up another notch a few games later. Gilbert initially thought Lendl didn't "play that big" only to find out a few games later...Lendl was just warming up to hit bigger serves and groundstrokes.

I suppose the decision whether or not to count backdraw wins would be between J-Man and TFM, but personally I'd think of them as wins. BHBH

it's my understanding that only certain category tournaments have a consolation draw. most likely the bigger ones. if someone can show me that the usta considers these "official" matches and that they count towards generating rankings -- i'll gladly count them. if they are only tracked in tennislink but don't count towards rankings -- then they are not official matches and for the purposes of this bet, do not count.

I *think* they do count toward rankings...but I'm not certain...I could try to find out? But others might already know...Tony would know, BHBH?

Edit: Rules for ranking points are here:

    http://www.usta.com/USTA/Global/Arc...ior/244756_Full_Feed_In_Consolation_Draw.aspx

Short answer is yes. But, you need to have at least a 16 person draw. So, it hasn't been an issue yet.

so we're on month #2 of the J011yroger bet. in one month, jolly played 4 tournaments. that's pretty impressive for someone who near as i can tell works 40+ hours a week like the rest of us fools. figure conservatively that each tournament costs $50, plus transportation, plus the cost of racquet stringing = a whole lot of dedication and money spent on the sport that we love.

so we have another 4 full months before the bet is over. best of luck in your matches jolly!

Secondly, as an insight to the ratings provided.

The first guy whom I played, played in a 5.0 league 6 years ago, and is currently unrated. I would consider him a 5.5 based on his Futures qualies, and National open rank. But you could make a case that he is a 5.0 because he lost to other players with 5.0 ratings. I suppose it depends on your view of the ratings, and if you really consider the people who play the singles spot on a 5.0 team, 5.0 players. I assume it is the same around the country, but here if your 5.0 team doesn't have a legitimate 5.5-6.0 player in the singles spot, your team isn't going anywhere. (If a freshly graduated or currently enrolled top 75 DI starter is playing on a 5.0 team, what do you consider them, I suppose is the question.)

The guy I played most recently last played on a 4.5 team 5 years ago, finished last year 18 in the east in Mens Open with a 12-6 record including numerous wins over 5.0 rated opponents. So he is clearly in the 5.0-5.5 range depending on your criteria.

I am sorry if I seem pissy, but a lot of these people whom I play are my friends, or if not close friends at least people I am friendly with. I have since practiced a couple of times with the first guy I played, and we became pretty friendly I drove out to his club 2 weeks after the tourney, played some GS games and a practice match, and will again. (I won the groundstroke games, he won the sets). And even the one or two who are jerks that I don't associate with unless forced to also have busted their tails to get to whatever level they are at. And it bothers me when people degrade them just to make me look worse (not specifically in this thread, and TFM is a cool guy, but in the past when I lost to a legitimate 5.5-6.0 player who is very highly nationally ranked and playing Future/Challenger qualies, who happens to be my friend, and people said that he was a 4.0 to make me look like a 3.5, that bothered me. When I lost to a guy who clobbered someone ranked 1200 in the world 6-0, 6-3 in a future qualy, and he was listed as a 5.0, that bothered me too).

So, that is really my only request, if you want to say something detrimental, please say is about me, or to me, and I will just laugh it off. But to degrade someone whom you have never met, or even seen play, and who has absolutely no stake in this is just lame.

Thanks for all the kind words, and I promise one way or another I will fix this lame first set problem, or die trying. Stupid January weather/lack of practice time.

Jolly, your tournament results speak for themselves... no need to justify your level by describing your hitting partners' levels. Right now you appear to be a 4.0, based on your results.

When you can consistently beat 4.5's you'll be a 4.5 and so forth. Nothing else matters.

    Agree.

I hit with an *ex*-futures player a few times a week. He *was* a 5.5-6.0 player a long time ago. He is not at that level anymore. Period. Any delusions I have of myself competing with him, and by association of what he once was, declaring myself a 5.5 is flat out *delusional*. Nothing more.

I also found this statment a bit odd, being that J insulted lower level players on this board. To add, I don't recall anyone insulting any of his opponents, rather, pointing out whatever their NTRP level is.

Still with you and behind you....
You know, with your big game, it's a really short time to move up a level and a half.
The weak hitters take forever to advance. The lions can take it whenever the cards fall into place.
Forget the naysayers, you know what level you belong in, so go pursue the dream.

Oh crap...draw just came out and have to play a tournament match tomorrow at 9pm.

Currently drunk as a skunk at superbowl party...

Hopefully the tennis gods will shine upon me an my opponent will be in a similar state of disarray/lack of sleep/will to live.

I for sure thought the tourney wouldn't start until Wed...

Ugh...stumbling into bed now, hopefully I can grab a 2 hour nap after work tomorrow.

    And a redbull.

    And some coffee.

And my opponent catches some food poisoning from tainted chili at a superbowl party lol.
