Today's match showed us several things.

1- It showed how much other players handle matches to Nadal based on the fear factor, now the way he was beaten, in straight sets, that fear is gone.
Djokovic was destroying Nadal 4x0 but lost concentration, played a couple bad games and let him back.

2- Nadal's time came later than what it was supposed to, but it finally happen. Two years ago Nova had chances like the ones he had today, but failed to do it so. Today was different, he is much more solid, less unstable mentally and He decided the match on his racket, in fact Djokovic made it more competitive, giving Nadal games.

3- Djokovic has beaten Nadal many times in a row, so Djoker is on his head now, making him doubt.

4- Nadal's spell is over, I remember some lucky shots, and unlucky shots by his opponents that would go out by an inch, finally are going in.

5- Nadal, as good as He is, He knows now, He needs to change the way He plays, Djoker has been beating him on daily basis now, and some of these matches are not even that competitive.

6- Nadal will lose the number one. Last year He took advantage of the fact many were out of form, injured, so forth, now is different.

7- Nadal fans, there is no excuse now, he is still on his prime, but anytime and any surface Djoker faces him it is an equal match.

8- Nadal doesn't have a good coach, and his strategies are out dated, the forehand against some player's 2 handed back hand are not effective against the one hander.

What do you guys have to say.

While Nadal is French Open champion, he is firmly on his clay throne.

Nadal losing on clay, even as rare as it is, shouldn't be celebrated with silly threads.

If Djk wins Rolland Garros, then I am sure most people will agree.

Nadal lost a match on clay, it's not the end of the world. If anyone in the past 5 years that hasn't been number 1 deserves it, it's Novak Djokovic. To say the matches haven't been competitive is ridiculous though. Nadal is reaching the final of every big event this year except the AO, and is having the best year out of anyone besides a certain "on-fire" serbian.

If Novak played in any other era he would have atleast 5 slams and probably a slam on every surface already. And spent a ton of time at #1. The Nadal-Federer fortress all things considered is incredible, it makes the Sampras-Agassi fortress look like childs play. Not that they werent great players too, but Agassi was hardly ever at his best while Sampras was, Sampras dominated fast courts and left it open to the field on slower ones, while Agassi was never dominant outside of hard courts.

Nole has not beaten Nadal on real clay court. He chickened out of Montecarlo. Your thread has failed.

So I guess that means Federer was the "King of Clay" from 2009 to 2010?

I think the question is, does Nadal really deserve the MC and Barca wins given that Novak was not there?

Does someone understand why Nadal gained 555 points this week despite finishing as runner-up in Madrid when he won the event last year?

Points from Madrid last year have not dropped off because Madrid was played a week earlier this year. Those points will drop off next week.

True, sadly the real/new Đoković showed up a bit late. He should have showed up a year or 2 before, at least after Federer's last slam.

Lucky Rafa to have won his slams in the weak era between Federer and Đoković !!!

Haha not a real clay court. Good one. You should pass that memo along to the ATP so they can reclassify it.

Very true. That court was playing really fast, like a hard court with sand on top.
I know that the clay courts in Paris and Rome are much slower, even slower than Barcelona.

This was true for all great players, fear factor goes a long way.

Two years ago Novak couldn't beat a Nadal who had tendinitis in his knees. And he was still better than 2011 clay Nadal.

I agree, but Nadal has problems with his game outside of Novak matches as well.

I see, so Nadal was lucky all this time that his opponents missed shots. Some lucky streak, failing him only about six times in six years on clay.

Nadal needs to go DTL with his FH and hit like 1000 BH every day to get his BH form back. It makes you LOL hard when Nadal can stay closer with Novak on slow HC than on fast clay.

And who is in such amazing form this year against Noval? Murray fizzed in AO finals against Novak as he does in every GS final, Fed has been good this year but nothing WTF 2010 worthy and he is almost 30, Nadal has been meh game wise in 2011, big hitters aren't terrific this year, delpo is reinjured, davydenko just came back from injuries.

Honestly, there is only Novak and Nadal right now and Nadal is on the decline.

Nadal has been a TOP player(meaning top two) for SIX SEASONS now(this is his seventh) with a extreme gamestyle. He will be 25 next month, the time around which guys like hewitt/chang(the high energy guys) started to go down. 2011 is in no way Nadal's clay prime and I've seen better form from Rafa on HC in years past. Grass season isn't looking too hot this year as well seeing Nadal's form.

Yes, it took only about six years to expose Tony but thankfully Rafa made to it to 9 slams even with such a crappy coach. :)

No, no, no - All your excuses are lame.

Federer was the best in the world for a long time.

Than was Nadal, for a bit shorter period.

Now Novak Djokovic is the best. Pure and simple.
We'll se for how long ...

    Nadal: M1000 + M500 + 600 points = 2100 points

    Djokovic: M250+ M1000 = 1250 points.

Nadal is still the king of clay this season.

Nadal is the still the FO champion. The champion in Rome also

    Defended MC and won Barcelona.

Nole has a long way to go to get this throne from him.

Ah, but Djokovic is winning the H2H. He beat Nadal in straight sets on his favorite surface. How can Nadal be the best on clay right now if he loses to his biggest current rival on his favorite surface in straight sets?

    ...jk haha.

I don't think he was dethroned.....he wasn't dethroned in 2007,2008,2009 when he lost to Federer and Ferrero on clay. It was just those guys played well enough to beat him that day just as Djokovic did yesterday.

Nadal wasn't playing like the clay master he was.....however it was tons better than how he played last year on clay and in MC. Wait till rome and rg...to find his full form. Still even at his best Nole has chances to win....but it is far from Djokovic becoming king of clay this year.

Well whoever wins RG....is the king of clay regardless of any other clay court titles that year. Nadal may sit on the throne, or Djokovic/Federer might grab it. Still Nadal is the king of clay with a slight blimp in 2009....and I don't see that often for it to change....though it would be nice to see Djokovic or Soderling to win RG.

bucket, you know i love you but this is a really crazy thread! novak is 1-9 vs. nadal on clay, so basically you're saying "the first time nadal loses to djoker on clay, he's done". really. and it doesn't matter if novak "gives other players the blueprint of how to beat nadal" because knowing what to do isn't enough, you actually have to be able to do it! and uncle toni isn't a good coach. really. they guy who coached up rafa on how to beat a godmode fed is a hack. really.

A friend of mine corrected me, there's no 'dethroning' until Roland Garros. He is only dethroned if he loses his French Open crown...

Even then it will not be a dethroning in the grand scheme of things. Nadal still has 5 FO titles. If Novak wins one FO, Nadal will still have 5.

MC is not the same week as Belgrade. So your reasoning is invalid.

Why would Novak be interested to play mickey mouse tournaments like Barcelona, where players like Dodig make SFs?
