Let me start off by saying that I am fully aware that we are not all professional writers, but some posts on here are nothing short of pathetic. I think some posters need to be reminded that this is not AIM, and is instead a place where people visit to gain invaluable information. Take for instance:

Sry, I h8 riting soes I didn't want to be scene as once who can right.

k so im doing some study questions for SAT cuz i have to take it soon.. and i dont understand the answer to a question.....
Anyone have any ideas? I know this is a lame topic to start a thread about, especially on a tennis forum, but i need a good SAT math score lol cuz my english is ****ty

i accually herd it wasnt but w/e lol i do it newayz and no1 said nething 2 me...

I often don't mind much when I can still read what someone is trying to say without having to think about it... however, when I actually notice the errors and they stand out, that's when I get irked. The SAT guy doesn't bother me much. The other two hurt my eyes a little.

I'm not such a huge stickler for grammar.. it really bothers you that much? Haha

I would suggest that posts written like an SMS or AIM just don't get taken seriously. Other than that, there are the usual "typos" which we are all guilty of, but most of the bad grammar comes from posters whose mother tongue is not English.

In short, be careful about attacking the grammar skills (or lack of) of other posters, after all nobody's changing the world on this forum. The best you can hope for is a flame war!

I don't know about that. Based on what I have seen, foreigners tend to display a superior use of the English language. It is quite shocking how many people with English as their native tongue make simple mistakes, such as (but not limited to) confusing "than" and "then", "your" vis-a-vis "you're" and let's not forget "their" with "they're" and of course "your" and "you're" on a consistent basis. There should be no excuse as to why someone who does not suffer from a learning disability and has English as their native tongue should not be able to separate between these words.

Making the occasional typo or constructing a little more complex sentence wrong, I have nothing against - it happens to the best of us. But simple mistakes like the ones mentioned above are a bit annoying to me.

And posts written in a "texting" manner are quite rude to those who do not have English as their native tongue. For many (even our English speaking fellows think so!) I would imagine it is hard to decipher what the heck the other person is trying to convey with his post when they type like that. To me, if they have the ability to type in a proper way and choose not to do so (for whatever reason it may be), it does nothing but show to me that what they have to say isn't all that important since they cannot take the time (I would argue that it's more time consuming typing in ******, but whatev') to type properly.

PS: Oh, I forget another common mistake! The replacing of the word "have" with "of": I would of, I could of, I should of...

Some native speakers seem to rely more on aural knowledge than on grammatical one, I suspect because they don't read too much in this multimedia era we are experiencing now. Hence the confusion between homophonic words or constructs (to-too, waist-waste and all those you have listed before.)

We foreigners rely more on grammatical knowledge since we approach the language more formally and learn it in relation with our native tongue, rather than by sheer immersion, like native kids do.

I have the impression that my spelling is much better than that of some natives and I think I have read quite more English literature than them. They would run circles around me in most other departments, though (pronunciation, fluency, idioms, lexicon, etc.)

Anyway, I agree: proper spelling, punctuation and capitalization raise the intelligibility of any written text immensely. It is much easier to read and you are much more inclined to take it seriously.

Count me in.

Poor communication skills lead to poor communication. If you don't respect your ideas enough to try to express them in a marginally acceptable way, why should I?

I appreciate a well written post specifically because my native language is not english and I know I have a lot to learn from the English Language. Most of the time I pay a lot of attention to what I write trying to do it as clear as possible without grammatical errors an yet it doesnt take ME that much time, so I cant understand why somebody whose native language is English would not take the time to write proper english. Funny thing is that after that they complain because people do not understand them!

well, I dont mind it here that much... even though it still bothers me a bit, specially reading some horrific errors by supposed native english speakers (not being one myself......).

I HATE bad grammar on important stuff, like work emails, reports, etc. I just feel its lack of respect in some sort, and/or just being lazy and careless so to me it is a big deal.

to me grammar is the foundation of a language so reading poor grammar is very painful in my opinion. I have nothing against typos like looser , but it's really driving me mad when it comes to 'bad' errors such as: they is , have been do , had increase etc etc.

Perhaps we should draw a line under the sarcastic bad grammar/spelling posts and decree that any errors henceforth are actual mistakes. We can then pillory the perpetrators like a frenzied, pedantic mob.

LOL. I was wondering how long it would take someone to catch that.
