Its clay she stinks on it anyway so it doesn't matter.

...which means she's wasting her time on the surface. Just skip it, the way various clay specialists skipped grass over the years.

There aren't that many consistent players on clay to begin with. What does it say about the field when the "Cow On Ice" wins the French? Since 2000, only one woman has gone on to win the French multiple times. Everyone else has been a one-time lucky girl.

She is actually moderately OK in red clay...if she can be said to have a best surface its probably clay.

This is true but I was putting on emphasis on the fact that Petra still has not made a GS F in 2 years just like Wozniacki failed to do so since her unique fluke F in US Open 2009. Petra isn't #1/was never #1 and her ranking suggests that such hopes shouldn't be laid on her shoulders in comparision of the top 3 but the hype annulates this exception considering that most of her fans on forums 'tennisforum, tennis.com...' (I know these are not great reliable sources but still...), put her as one of the contenders in all slams - experts too.

Petra still has Wimbledon this year, her best surface - wait and see.

True for most but I don't bite into the national anthem that slimming down and having greater focus is the medecine to all her wounds... Petra's style of play at it's best or close is simply just unsustainabl on the long run... she'll always have these ups and lows, it's simply human ; it amplifies greatly with her style of tennis -- she can still go the 'Sharapova way'. Physically, she'll never ever be a great athlete, she can progress a bit like Sharapova but what would that really change much in the grand schemes of things ? Sharapova runs and moves better than ever yet she still gets bashed by Serena or Victoria.

Not exactly, but when 3 of my least favorite players on the tour get knocked out in the first 2 rounds it is very enjoyable.

Not like I care about Stuttgart--Sharapova is top seed and defending champ. Yawn! They might as well just hand her the trophy now.

No, but following the live score app on my phone I was sincerely rooting for Ana to beat a top player for once. I would have loved Sharapova to lose to this headcase in a tournament whose field should not even take a set off Maria

She has had two very tough matches in 2 days. I really think Kerber has a shot at the upset in the semis! Lets hope.

Speaking of upsets....Can't believe Mattek-Sands is playing this well. Who would've thought? She spanked Lisicki (but that's not really saying that much, especially considering it was on clay) but I cant see her getting past the winner of Kvitova/Li.

Lets hope. :) She looked good against Kvitova today. And really, as long as someone other than Sharapova wins I'll be happy. Li and Kerber are my favorites of the remaining players...lets hope one of them can smack-down the screaming pigeon.

I was under the impression in past years you were atleast a moderate backer of Pova, although not when she played Serena. Has that changed too? Maybe I was misreading and it was a case you were happy to see her in the mix again as you acknowledge her value as part of the elite, and since you need a major villian to root against now that Henin is long retired, but now that she is back there you are happy to root against her.

Glad to see Bethanie Mattek Sands having a nice little run. I always enjoy her, seems like a cool person. She actually has a lot of game, but, like so many others, she can't harness it consistently. Points and money from at least a SF run mean a lot to a player like her. Wickmayer, Errani, and Lisicki is an impressive collection of wins.

No, not really. Sharapova has an ugly game, an ugly personality, and an ugly banshee-wail. While it's nice to see a group of players consistently at the top of the game (after a period of extreme instability in the top 10), I very much enjoy when Maria and Azarenka get pummeled because, simply put, they're d0uchebags. I'll still root for them over the likes of Wozniacki, Errani, and the rest of the pushers however.

Thank god for Serena. While I would like to see people like Na, Kvitova, and Radwanska beat Azarenka and Sharapova more consistently, Na and Kvitova are just too headcasey and error prone despite clearly having the games needed, and Radwanska's lack of firepower will always hurt her in those matchups. Hopefully by the time Serena retires there will be some new talents emerged to keep Azarenka from dominating and tallying up a ridiculous slam tally (Maria will be on the way down by then with age anyway).

Any Zvonareva news? It's taking a long time for her shoulder and ankle to heal. I might as well declare her R.I.P. :(

according to her website she had shoulder sugury in February. So between recovery and rehab she may not be back till at least the US Open and probably later. Even then..shoulder injuries can be destructive and she may never be her old self again.

Victoria Ke$harenka seems to be taking some time to come back from her ankle injury. I wonder if she'll play Madrid or Rome?
Anyone heard anything? I had a little look on the web but couldn't get anything recent.

Back to back straight sets 1st round exits, at least this time she didn't get served a breadstick. Has wozi really always been this bad on clay?

Pretty much. Her movement on clay is ugly mainly because she cannot really slide. People call Sharapova Cow on Ice, well she moves better on clay than Woz does. Woz's clay success has been on faster green clay (Charleston) or due to insanely easy draws. Pretty much any clay specialist worth the title can beat her on dirt (as proven by Schiavone at the French, Suarez Navarro this year, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez a few years ago). She had one OK year on clay in 2009...other than that well...umm...she's bad.

Yes, totally ; the bigger picture though is that Wozniacki is just simply done overall. Her game is just totally lost though she'll always be due to some fluke runs here and there like in Indian Wells because of Victoria's retirement but on average, she'll get beat by any competent non-choking top 100 player.

Yara really got tight at the end of the match and almost let Wozniacki back - I still remember also Lisicki's huge choke in Australian Open's first round but this is how Wozniacki wins most of her matches nowadays and anyways also in the past.

Li Na is down 1-4 to Madison Keys. She has already hit 13 errors. So much for a triumphant Li Na clay season.

That is typical of Li. The year she made the Australian Open Final and won the French she lost like 5 matches in a row in the middle, than only won 6 matches the rest of the year. She is totally inconsistent. Keys is a full throttle big hitter and Li obviously wasn't in her full throttle mode and got creamed. I am really not surprised...she could have just as easily double bageled the girl.

When she clicks...look out. When she doesn't..she gets knocked out.

Keys is dangerous anyway, Li isn't the first big name she has scalped and pushed around in a match.

Li Na is 8-34 for the match, what an incredible joke for a world n°5. She and Kvitova just really need to create a tour for themselves (laughter) ; Petra herself was 30-52 in her match won in 3 against Wickmayer.

I can't really remember Li's record against Maria in Miami - but she's probably broken it or not (?)

This thread has been too silent despite all the drama that has occurred recently from Sloane's tirade against Serena to all the seeds dropping like flies at Madrid. Now in Rome, Wozniacki has another first round loss. I'm not a fan of hers, but "What's Wrong With Her"? She has fallen like a rock. She was #1 for 2 years (didn't deserve to be there, but at the time the good players were injured or otherwise sucked). Has her game been figured out? Have her legs just given out from all the years of retrieving? Is her motivation gone? I think order has somewhat been restored with the actual top players in their rightful place in the rankings but now I just feel sorry for Woz.

I just saw the Ivanovic result. At this point can her French Open win be called a fluke? She was in the right place at the right time with Justine Henin's sudden retirement? I haven't seen Ana recently, but last time I did she appeared to be too skinny (my opinion). Has the weight loss improved her movement or has it taken away from her power? Or is she just a mental case regardless?

when she's preparing to serve, you can see her shoulder bone poking out is if about to burst through the skin. she does have good movement, which being lighter helps, but she's probably just a mental case. she seems to be slowly adapting to the advice of her coach nigel sears, but I think it's gonna take a while longer. when she got some bad calls in madrid, she wasn't able to put it behind her, and those bad calls occurred at crucial times. it seems her new BF is helping her feel more secure, but who knows whether he's more of a distraction (same as rory has been for caroline)?

    time will tell!

She is an inconsistent headcase. That is unfortunate because she has a nice style of play to watch when she is on.
