To get a cultural touch to this thread.
Phrases for cheering someone up in tennis in German (Austrian German).
    Auf geht's = Let's go
    Gemma! = Let's go
    Hop auf! = Let's go
Passt schon, hol ma wieder! = don't bother, fight on!

If wished I can go on with much more when I have more time.

Thanks, my German is rusty and learned in Kaiserslautern, Germany. "auf geht's" is alright by me, just thought it was a pluralized form for a group.

Auf geht's, Thieminator! Win this third, with so many break chances you should.

Tough loss after getting so close. Hope it's a learning moment for him.

On to Madrid qualies I would guess.

He's already on the way with wins over Simon, Nieminen, Rosol, and Sousa.

Thiem served for the first set against Benneteau in Miami, only to be broken like he was today against Giraldo in the third. It's too early to tell if this will become a pattern, but it's not much to worry about at this point in his development.

They say the best NFL cornerbacks have to develop amnesia for the "burn". I think he'll etch these out of his mental "sketch" and maybe even get stronger from it.

Bresnik does have a wealth of riches in his stable and it's not far fetched to believe the Thieminator will surpass The Ernests due to a little more mental stability.

Madrid qualies draw is out...The Thieminator is up to #8 seed and faces Leonardo Mayer in R1 and the winner of Matosevic/Stakhovsky in R2 if he gets past the Argentine. In form from Barca, this is an "I'll be back" proposition!

The Thieminator through to R2 of qualies, dropping the 1st set TB but rallying strongly for the win over L. Mayer. He plays Matosevic, who defeated Stakhovsky with a similar outcome.

"I'll be back", I tell ya!

Interesting factoid...The Thieminator leads the pack (6) in advancing to ATP main draws from qualifying, one ahead of Goffin and PHM. Goffin is not active this week at Madrid or any Challenger event (???) while PHM did win his 1R qualie today (d. Munoz de la Nava) and faces Harrison for a MD spot tomorrow.

The Thieminator is scheduled for Pista 4 in the third match after two women's contests that start at 1100 Madrid time...figure around 1500 or 1600 at the latest.

    Viel Gluck, Dominic!

i'm personally not over enthusiastic as i was at first.
he had a good first impact, but now he needs to climb the ladder
and fight his way up, and he lost a bit of his mental toughness i thought he had before.
takes him too much time to get into groove in qualifying matches, looses sets too easily.

Take it easy man. I just meant that people are setting themselves for disappointment here. Let the guy prove himself first.
But of course, you have the right to support anyone you want. My bad!

    Yeah, and??
Yes I started the "Nadal News 2.0" thread. Does that make me fanboy automatically?
I started it, so that posting relevant news can be a bit easy. Not my fault, that some other Rafa fans (you know which ones), have started posting every inch and tiny detail about him there. ;) Quite frankly, I get nauseous sometimes reading those excessively detailed posts.

P.S Says a guy who started "Djokovic Brethren thread: Brethren only"? :p

So we're supposed to wait until a magical green light comes on and it's OK to cross the street. When does that happen? When he wins a 250, a 500, a MS1000? OK, Thiem has won so now it's OK to support him bcoz Ninja says it's so.

I rather think of where the game is going instead of kneel at the altar of the past and present. I'm as big a Rogi fan as any but the game is a lot larger than him and will carry on long after he retires. That's why it's great to embrace new talents like Thiem as soon as you see they have that glimmer of hope. This kid has it.

The Thieminator serves out the 1st set, 36 minutes dropping only 6 points on serve in his 5 service games. 70%+ 1st serves and zero BPs against him.

    Keep it up, Dominic!

The Thieminator wins and into the main draw! Very solid performance and well conserved energy, needing only 69 minutes for the 4 and 4 win. 69% 1st serves yielded 86% 1st serve points won...that's very strong on clay!

The seven qualie spots have a few tough assignments (Almagro, Haas, Kohlie, Isner) but Hewitt, Youzhny and Tursunov are a bit vulnerable on recent form. If he draws Almagro and wins, it will set up a rematch with Murray, something I would very much like to see! A win over Tursy means 2R vs Wawrinka, one where I won't know who to root for but a classic shbh battle.

Guess I'll just have to wait and see!

    Nice for him.

Do me a favor, please ask a friend around to get a small cup of cold water, then gently pour it over your head. That perhaps will get you out of your dream sleep. Just trying to help here

Thiem is doing great but to think he is ready to take on Wawrinka is completely delusional.

I have no doubt he will storm towards the top 20 but to go towards the top ten you need more than just being a big hitter. And as I said before he needs to take the ball way sooner. If he plays a match with a top ten player they can drive him to every corner they like because he will give them way too much time for their shots. Also his mental game is not quite there yet.

    thanks for the info.

Thiem said on FB that the clay is pretty fast and high bouncing, so it might fit his game and give him an edge here in Madrid.

Good win for Thiem beating Matosevic 6-4, 6-4 in the the final round of qualies. Matosevic is a good player, nice win.

    oh yea?
well this is from the horse's mouth:

"Madrid is not a typical claycourt tournament, the courts are very fast and the altitude speeds the game up, the balls bounce exremely high."

hope that words from someone who actually played there will convince you.

I didn't say he would win vs Stan; I said I wouldn't know who to root for; but it's not delusional to expect him to compete against him or other top 10 guys. He very nearly beat Murray in Rotterdam, has a win vs a former top 10 (Melzer) and generally plays tough in every match.

Closing matches may be an Achilles heel but the mental side is fine besides that. He is very well organized in his thoughts prior to his matchups, pooling info from Bresnik and Gulbis about first-time opponents and analyzing tape of the opponent. Most 20-year-olds don't get that thorough before matches. This readiness reminds me of a once-youthful guy he's had the pleasure to practice with on recent occasions...an old whippersnapper from Basel.
