"In a study conducted by Scott Sinnett, a psychology professor at the University of Hawaii, 33 undergraduate students watched tennis players hitting balls – with some of the tennis players grunting as they hit. Researchers then had the students indicate the direction of the shot immediately afterwards.

Turns out grunting not only slowed down the students' response time – it caused them to make more mistakes in guessing the direction of the shots."

If this study can be duplicated and verified, shouldn't that be enough to ban grunting once and for all for violating clearly stated rules?

I know when I grunt while working out, I can't tell what direction the dumbbells are going...we better ban it there too.

Sounds like a clear indication to start grunting. My own studies confirm people play their best when grunting.

What's the worst is when the other person grunts about 3 seconds after they hit the ball, right when you're about to hit it.

    Scream yes; squeal no

I respect a strong, gutteral exhale, even a healthy Williams sister scream; but I really can't stand high-pitched squealing and screeching, a la Azarenka and Sharapova. Sharapova is more like screaming now, which I prefer to the "backing over a large pig" sound she used to make. There is no possible reason for the 3-second squeal made by Azarenka. It's not only unnecessary (can't imagine it helps her hit) but it's so loooong and drawn out, like "weeeeeeeeeeoooooooooo" that her opponent is hitting the ball while she's still squealing. I do think that should be considered a hinderance.

I was watching the Tennis Channel a few days ago. A women's match was on and I only could watch for about five minutes. The grunting/squealing was unbearable.

I've complained to other players who grunt at the indoor club I use, as one grunter disturbs 5 other courts with the acoustics in there. Most try to stop, one kid didn't so I went over near his court and let out loud grunts when he was about to hit the ball. I'm at least his father's age, so I was pretty sure he wouldn't try to kill me. He got the point.

stop grunting when "doing it" too!

on a serious note.. grunting sometimes helps a player's timing, I know its weird but it works for me.

I hear that aggressive and confident body language may hinder the opponent's performance. Perhaps we should legistlate this too...

Grunting = Breathing so you expect players like Azarenka to pass out from lack of oxygen ??? i don't think she can hold her breath that long..

Exactly.. Plus the fact that a lot people already do it, the ATP would have loads of problems even getting people to stop. People would rebel and so on.. it would be a disaster. There is no problem with grunting as long as it is not soley done to annoy or hinder someone or their performance.

I dont mind grunting. but when it is like 5 seconds later and its like AHWWWHH no thats not grunting that is screaming to distract the other player.
