Tipsarevic: Good junior could crush Serena
    Ticker - Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Janko Tipsarevic tells the publication Berner Zeitung that female tennis players should not be paid the same as men, and also takes a swipe at the quality of women's play.

"Men's tennis is currently in the top four in terms of quality and popularity, it’s at its peak, just like golf when Tiger Woods dominated. In the women's tennis it’s very different," he said. "I do not underestimate the achievements of Victoria Azarenka and the others, but their best time is over. That was when the Williams sisters, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo were at the top. I don't even want to talk about (the fact) that a good junior could beat Serena 6-1, 6-2. But I think it's simply ridiculous that women earn on the same at the Grand Slam events."

I don't think any Junior can....they would be scared of Serena the first time.

I agree with Janko. Obviously I couldn't beat a WTA pro, but a top junior who could compete with lower level ATP pros should be able to easily handle the top females. Their level of play is so much lower.

I think a top 200 would crush Serena but definitely not a junior. Tipsy must have been real tipsy when making that statement.

Against a top 200 player who was actually trying, she might be lucky to get two, maybe three points in a set.

I wouldn't mind them shaving off say, 20% from the woman's side - but they'd need to take it off the top of the prize money.

Gotta pay the lower ranks to have a tour...

Why aren't the women doing best of 5 with a 5th set being a tiebreaker or something in majors?

No, I don´t think Tipsarevic is wrong. He has practiced with various good junior players like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zu-YxMob7Y&list=UUk_BCUW0e2O9BfduJAOAHZA&index=3&feature=plcp
and knows the level of these guys.
This guy top 50 ITF at that time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DfEiycpNS4
beat Justine Henin 6-2 in a practice set in RG 5 years ago so I believe it. He is currently like 300 ATP. Maybe top juniors won´t beat Serena as easy as Tipsarevic says but still I think they will beat her.

Have people forgotten when Serena and Venus challenged #200 ranked Kaarsten Brasch? I believe he beat Serena 6-1 & Venus 6-2 without much effort. Despite all the 'Serena could play on the men's tour' talk the truth is she would be unlikely to win an international junior event playing against the boys.

nothing new. Tipsy is right, like it or not. any 5.0 guy would smoke any female player regardless if her name is Serena or Sceamarenka. this has been discussed to death already. Janko might not sound politically correct he but he he knows what he is talking about.

The WTA is probably at all times low. I couldn't care less. Bring back Navratilova/Evert or Seles/Graf ... I would be very interested, but right now, meh ...

If she served well, it's be difficult to break her, no matter who you are, even Djokovic or Fed, doesn't matter what gender you are if there are 120+ mph serves smack on the tee...

If she didn't serve well on the other hand, most likely would be 6-0 6-0

Apart from that, Tipsy is completely right as it regards to every other WTA player.

I saw Serena serving regular at 115 mph and above in her Wimby matches. I'm pretty sure that's faster than the junior boys.

Why would she not at least hold her serve a few times?

People need to understand that equal pay isn't about level of play or even amt of sponsors for the slams, it's all about PR and it would be practical PR suicide for the slams to reverse it now. Love it or hate it, the equal pay is here to stay regardless. Wertheim made a great point in his article a few weeks ago in that the men and women players should really be arguing for more total prize money given the revenue the slams generate.

I think you should have watched the AO and Wimby juniors. Those kids can easily get their serves up to 115. Hell, the number one junior in the state where I'm from when I was a junior there was serving that with no problem.

the fans may understand it, but the players don't have to. men's tennis players must feel like 2nd class citizens everytime they find the women drawing the same amount of money from a common purse, when they contribute relatively little towards filling it!

That is definitely not true. I know many kids that could touch 115 by the time they were 16. One pro at my local club played a match and lost against a junior that was top in the section in the 18s. The pro played at Ole Miss, and can routinely serve in the mid 120s, and occasionally touch 130. I would think that that junior can handle a serve coming in at 115.

so many advocates for equal pay equal work. I suppose all of you are adovcating for this at your place of employment. Thats why we are continuing to move toward more equailty in pay among men and women.....wait, we are not.

Why dont you spend your time fighting for a real cause there are plenty of women who make less than their male counterpart despite have equal levels of education and experience. In fact most women have to earn a master's degree just to have the same lifetime earningd as a man and yes that is within the same field of study.

"In 1998 203rd ranked male player Karsten Braasch took on Venus Williams and beat her 6-2. He also played Serena Williams and won 6-1. Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance" as he claimed he had played like someone ranked 600 in order to keep the game "fun."

so you do expect women to be paid the same, given equal level of skill?
so what's wrong if male tennis players expect to get paid more given their superior skills to women?

In the grand scheme of things, Tipsarevic is a nobody. If Fed, Nadal, Djoker, or Murray said these things they would get crucified and may even lose endorsements. It's a stupid argument, it's not like the women are taking money from the men, the slams make money hand over fist. The argument really should be about raising prize money across the board, not taking money away from the women or making them do 'equal work'.

The men and women have separate tours the individual who wins makes the same amount on both tours. tennis players are not paid on a metric scale based on skill level in tennis its based on wins. We can all agree that the more "talented" player doesn't always win so how can that be a factor in this discussion. Tennis pay is based on winning and losing until that changes your point is moot.

disagreed. If 2X% of the total earnings from a slam is marked as prize money, then under the current set up, the men get X% and the women get X%, and this is regardless of what X is. How does increasing X solve the problem? The split should be (IMO) based on some metric that is fair to both parties; tying it to the revenue they generate is one such metric. neither party can cry foul in this case!

Its a pity this is a prime example of people fighting against each other when they should work together for a different cause, in this cause overall increases in percent of earnings going to the players.

The tournament heads are so happy that the journalist bring this up every slam heaven forbid the two tours join together to demand more pay they couldn't say no. so they are loving this petty bickering.

A very good junior like Federer and Edberg good kind of juniors back in the day? They would crush Serena. Janko is right. I don't agree however that women should be paid less, that's discrimination.

people also forget that the whole business of equal money( at slams) came about during the early 2000's when arguably, the women's tour was more compelling when you had the WS, Davenport, Capriati, Hingin, Pierce, and later on Henin and Clijsters making every event and slam high drama( with quality play).

your argument will work if there are slams are run separately for women and men. they're not. when both tours have a common purse (as is the case in slams), then I don't think it's unfair that the ones that generate more revenue expect to be paid more (proportional to what they generate).

The "talent" is a factor in discussion because you introduced the notion of expecting "equal" pay for "equal" skills (experience and education) in your argument.

That rarely happens, and psychologically she would be prone to errors knowing what going to come bacK. Most of the aces are down the T and any fool that watches her knows that is her go to serve. Take that away from her and it would be quite laughable.

I have seen more people surround Fed at his hit sessions in 250 tourneys than are seated in a woment 250 tourney for the entire week. How can a tour support itself with numbers like that, what would happen if the WTA tried to have their slams seperately?

They are receiving equal pay for equal work because tennis pay is based on wins. You are adovcating a different pay system that does not currently exsist in tennis. Players aren't paid more when the win a match on the main show court vs the smaller courts. They aren't paid based on how many people report enjoying their match. They are paid based on whether or not they win or lose thus the man champion and the female champion having both won 7 matches make the same amount of money. Equal pay equal work based on the pay scale in tennis.

your argument is akin to "i work 8 hrs so i should be paid the same as the CEO of my company who works 8 hrs too". except, the per hour rate of a CEO is much greater than an employee who is down the ladder. and that is my argument. the per victory or defeat rate for men's tennis should be higher than the one for women. And this rate can be arrived at after examining how much money each tour brings to the slams. fair enough?

The money is a touchy issue and that is only because most of us are guys. but I think they deserve it equal even if I personally don't feel like its fair sometimes based on certain aspects, no matter the skill level. Its the only sport in the world where women get equal pay and exposure in slams and I think that is a testament to the sport itself and our progressive nature as tennis players.

Also, I wouldn't understimate Serena against anyone, if her serve is on she can beat some top players (ie. 100+, and on a good day some within the top 100). But that is also Serena, other players would not really have a shot they just don't have the strength. But Serena on a grass court, i'd say could beat some good male players.
