This thread is for the best Wimbledon Final that you ever saw (tv or in person).
The catch is that it is one where you had to be watching it live.
So it you are 21, you can't say the 1980 Borg/Mcenroe final.
What's the ultimate final for you?

    Please qualify your choice.
    For me it's REAL easy. 2001 Ivanisevic/Rafter.
Ivanisevic has to be one of the most charasmatic players to ever play, all while being one of the mosty sympathetic figures in all of sport.
The guy gets to the finals a number of times all while coming up empty.
I really thought that he was going to hurt himself after the loss to Sampras in the late 90's.

The guy gets a wildcard into Wimbledon with a burned out shoulder and pretty much serves his way to a title. He also had one of the toughest draws I can ever remember.
    Moya
    Rusedski
    Roddick
    Safin
    Henman
    Rafter
It was absolutely amazing and in my opinion, it just doesn't get any better than that.
Remember all of the different Gorans? The bad, the good, the emergency, and the 911 Goran :)

Frankly I'm sick and tired of Borg-McEnroe. It was probably the most high quality tennis final at the all-england club (1980) - if you look at all the figures. But it's overplayed.

I loved the 1982 F between McEnroe and Connors. Seeing Connors, at 30, winning with sheer will is amazing. Edberg-Becker in 1990 was excellent, but not perfect - Becker was very mistake prone. Ivanisevic-Rafter was fun, but not picture-perfect tennis.

Sampras was a great champion, but I don't like watching his Wimbledon matches. I don't like them, I don't like the way his opponents played against him - I liked it when Krajicek beat him in 96. Sampras best work was in the US Open.

I must say that today's final rates very, very highly for me.

I agree about the quality of tennis for the '01 ivanisevic final.
It was all about the drama for me and imo, that was the most drama filled final and (maybe tournament) of my lifetime, so far.

ivanisovic/rafter hands down -- the most exciting tennis match i saw in 47 years. Today's was pretty good though. I did not think Federer was going to pull this one off.

sampras-ivanisevic in 1998 was also a great match, although it was visibly sampras' title in the 5th set

I've been watching since the early 90's, so I'll have to give it to Rafter/Ivanisevic - the absolute best drama and atmosphere in any match I've ever seen.

For a fed. fan, yes, certainly the best final. But having watched 20+ yrs, I'd say nothing compares to Goran finally winning it in 2001.

for me it was the match where Edberg defeated Becker I don't remember if it's the one in 1988 or the one in 1990.

I'm a youngin', and just getting serious about my tennis recently, so I'd have no choice but to give it to today's Federer/Nadal performance...

But I'm not sure it's not a good pick anyways! That match was RIDICULOUS!!!

1990 final. Went to 5 sets after Edberg got the first two.

i would have to say yes. with all the hype about the fed being the best (and possibly so), with #1 and #2 meeting on clay and then on grass, bjorg being in the stands pondering his record, roger going for #5 and rafa trying to be the first since bjorg to win on clay and then grass in the same year, and having a clay specialist push a grass specialist so toughly made this one special considering it went five as well and all the hype about it unfolded in truth.

i thought the joker was going to meet the fed and not have the nerves of steel needed to push the fed. well, rafa surprised me, ended up in the finals and gave me breakfast and lunch at wimbledon. i became a true fan of rafa for his effort. i saw the tears of joy on the fed's face and how much he truly covets wimbledon more than any other tournament.

i just couldn't ask for anything more than what i witnessed not only today--but from thurs until this morning as well....

Yeah I agree with that. I still watch it on dvd from time to time and you realise what a great effort Goran made.

I actually missed the 2001 final with it being played on a monday so have never seen anything other than the last couple of games so I can't really comment on it.

My vote would be for the 1992 final with todays getting a mention for what it meant, a match where one player would make a major piece of history (Nadal the first to win the French and Wimbledon in the same year for something like 27 years and Federer to get the 5th straight title).

It really meant alot and to have the quality of match we had surely makes it rank up there with the best.

Thanks. it must be that one ! I think it's better than today's match because Becker and Edberg would win most of their points at the net. In today's match, most of the points were won from the baseline, so it was played more like a match at Roland Garros than a match at Wimbledon.

These may not be the final match... but the semis with Rafter vs Agassi were the best!

Today's match was great, but Rafter and Goran in 2001 had me on the edge of my seat. I know it sucks, but their will be many more chances for Nadal. Goran, on the other hand, was starting to get old. It was a now or never situation for him, and Ratfer(who was retiring).

Sorry Borg and Mac for me. I was a little kid, waking up early to watch it I became a tennis player because of it. Borg was the closest I ever came to having a sports role model. If you look at Rafa and Fed today. Their combined accomplishment to date at FO and W equal one man, the Borg.

Of course he couldn't win USO and AO wasn't a big tourney back then but what he did in June and early July was amazing.
