^ Cool. I was mostly addressing the comment about listening deeply to them or whatever -- just pointing out that's not what they're for.

Likewise, when adults complain about cartoons sucking, I wonder if they realize they're made for 7 year olds, or that Hannah Montana is for 12 year old girls, so no wonder 30 year old men think it sucks. Akon ain't trying to be Bob Dylan.

My view is that because of the rise of gangsta rap and its off-shoots, the hip-hop that was popular 'back in the day' (like Public Enemy, or Eric B and Rakim, or Ice T, or DeLaSoul, or whoever), has been overtaken, and more importantly, its attitudes have been replaced by lower and uglier forms. Which, I suppose, doesn't mean it's total crap (it's certainly popular enough), I just can't be dealing with it. It's too ugly and dumb and a caracature of itself. Furthermore, it also seems to me that there were some genuine talents around the advent of the gangsta rap period - the originators such as Tupak, Notorious BIG, Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre - but what was to follow was way way less inspired. And then, to the other extreme, there is that kind of pop rap, which I think some folk are refering to (Akon, Nellie perhaps.) This commercial rap 'lite' has always been around (LLCoolJ, or MC Hammer even) and whilst again, it's not for me, it's no worse than a load of that manufactured boy/girl band stuff.

Anyway, no one here in the UK could ever properly be into hip hop culture anymore - not after Ali G (I'm not sure if Ali G's known that much beyond these shores?)

    It sure isn't my music.

this doesnt make sense to me. Akon's song is not even about being gangster. its just a club song. commercial. for sale. something to grind to. in a few weeks noone will even care. i like the song though.

I still have a few hours of Yo Mtv Raps from my school days on VHS, and there was plenty of crappy rap back then. People keep talking about artists they liked back then as proof rap was better back then, forgetting that 99% was crap. There was actually MORE POPPY STUPID RAP back then. They were allowed to exist. All of Herbie Luv Bug's artists were poppy and silly as pink poodles, acts like Salt and Pepa, Kwame, and Kid N Play.

I actually think on the whole, rap has gotten better, although I think we're on a temporary down swing right this second. Still, relatively recently, Kanye West, Common, Missy Elliot, Eminem, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killa, and Outkast have all put out records that can stand up against any rap or hip hop album ever put out. Lupe Fiasco is supposed to be good, although it's a little too foo foo for me, and I would even consider Gnarls Barkely hip hop. I heard The Clipse new album is the bomb. People simply forget all the bad rappers of the past, 20 years later they only remember the best of the best of that era.

And all these people talking about Biggie. I don't remember too many people bumping Ready to Die. Now everybody talks about how great he was. Same with Tupac. I remember people saying he represented all they hated about rap, his cocky thug self. Now he's the John Lennon patron saint of gangsta rap.

Rap bugs me. Most annoying music every. I'd rather listen to death metal, and thats really saying something. Its just a bunch of people talking about nothing with some bass playing one note in the background.

I like death metal, watch it!

Most modern rap I don't like. There's the occasional song, and I usually just like it for the beat. I don't really bash it though, I hate the elitism that some people have with regard to music.

"scene" kids who rip on people for liking anything other than punk or ska, not even realizing what their own genre's about. It was about being different and not whining about it...not forcing it on anybody because they wanted to be better. Whatever though, this thread isn't about that.

One person who touches ANYTHING and turns it to gold would be Mike Shinoda. Fort Minor's first album is AWESOME. He's great on the Linkin Park albums too. Creative lyrics and doesn't talk about all the sex, drugs, and the like.

Lyrics from my favorite songs on the FM album:
Man I love this rap game
    Mainly cuz its cool
To add a little spice to the life you've been through
Everyone exaggerates a tiny little bit
To make that **** sound more gangster than it really is
    You cant appear weak man
    We wanna hear street
Wanna hear you spit your thug over this here beat
    Dont take it as sarcastic
    I can't get enough
    Im telling you
    You can call my bluff
If it's not rough, then I really don't need it

The unedited version is actually "i wanna fcuk you". I thought it was a little much when I heard it unedited. I do like the backing track/beat whatever you call it. It sounds very 'Pharrell'.

Mos Def, Jedi Mind Tricks, Masta Ace, Stricklin, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, MF DOOM (and all his aliases: Vince Vaughn, Danger Doom, ETC), Aesop Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Atmoshpere, Gym Class Heroes, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and The Roots. theres a list of wholesome, underappreciated rap artists with meaning behind their lyrics. with the exception of lupe fiasco, the roots, and mos def, not a lot of them get a whole lot of spotlight. Kanye and Common belong in that list too. they deserve to be the future of rap, because this new stuff about girls, guns, and gangs isnt good. hell, Sugar hill gang, Afrika Bambaataa, KRS-One, Run-DMC, Young MC, and ESPECIALLY the Beastie Boys are better than G-Unit, Yung Joc, Young Jeezy and all that other stuff.

I like Eminem. I like Jay-z. I like Snoop, Dre, and most of the Hyphy Movement (Mac Dre, E-40, Mistah F.A.B.) and The Game. But 50 cent and other guys like that make me sick. i hate 50 cent. a lot.

Edit add-in: i read some posts, and Fort Minor/Shinoda and Ghostface do have meaningful lyrics. while people may say that wholesome rap is nearly impossible to find, look deeper than that top 100 chart.

i hate rap where every second word is a swear word...!

    Quote Talib Kweli:
"Kick facts in the raps, and curse with clarity
What's a curse when language is immersed in vulgarity"

A couple excerpts from Old School by Danger Doom Feat Talib Kweli:

They inspire my decision to be open and listen
But folks got it all twisted, like a yoga position
Like, in order to spit it dope, you gotta have a criminal past

..Or felt they had to put it up in they raps to set it fat
And since when lyrical skills had to do with killin a cat?
What type of chitlins is that?

I hate rap. How cool is it to be poor, get shot at, shoot people, have sex with a bajillion women that aren't you're wife and get drugged up? Is that exciting or something? How cool is that?
