OK: So it was only in the Hopman Cup and not in a major match, but a win is a win. There's something about Tomic's game that troubles Djokovic: He took a set off him at Wimbledon in 2011 and was up a break in the 3rd threatening to make it 2 sets to 1. I saw him play Djokovic in an exhibition several years ago where he troubled Djokovic as well. The much maligned tank engine might prove his critics wrong this year.

It's no secret Djokovic likes a rythm a lot and has trouble with people slicing and giving him some junk. Which is also why Roger still leads the h2h against him.

With respect to the bolded part: I don't see how Tomic can prove someone wrong. if he suddenly wins everything, it only means his critics were even more right. That he wasn't giving his best up until now. Nobody has said that he is talentless.

I think there are a lot of people that said that Tomic just doesn't have the attitude to be a top 5 player. In that respect, he could be on his way to proving his critics wrong. That said, all he's done is beaten Cvac in a 250 - not exactly enough to blow your skirt up.

Sorry mate, but it doesn't count - it won't appear in the H2H as it's an exho.

Yep, people in Australia are getting excited over this. I wont be dancing until he gets a result like this in a big tournament.

I know Murray is a far better mover, but I see a lot of Murray in Tomic. Djokovic doesn't like playing Tomic for the same reasons that he at times has struggled against Murray. It is only a matter of time before Tomic eliminates Djokovic at a slam, and becomes a slam winner.

What was Djokovic at Wimbledon 2011? Because in that match, Tomic gave him fits. Djokovic was never taken to 5 sets at Wimbledon 2011, but the closest 4th set he played (7-5) was vs Tomic. And obviously Tomic will improve a lot more, while Djokovic will only fall.

Djokovic could have easily gotten to that first "winner" in the highlights. In slam play, he is the greatest fighter of this era; Tomic is still way, way outside elite circle, but g'job I guess.

Djokovic has retired from more slam matches than any player in history. He's a "great fighter" for maybe 12 months of his career, and that is all (seeing as he hasn't won a slam since January 2012).

Yeah at Wimbledon 2011 too, Djokovic was too busy handing out chocolates....

What absolute garbage. Eeyore is one of the biggest quitters on the tour, and that includes quitting multiple times in slam matches, and nearly achieving the "retirement slam". Biggest fighter of this era? Bullsh*t.

Hate to break it to you nadal_GOAT_king but most posters have commented on Tomic vs Djokovic at Wimbledon 2011. You need to find a poster using the same words as another poster before you start making accusations. My post is nothing like nadal_slam_king's post. Only similarity is I referred to the 7-5 set

I agree with this. If he suddenly starts doing his best it only shows how much more of a waste it would have been if he had kept on partying. It's not that bad if he gets serious now, he's still young. But he shouldn't wait any longer.

Serbia beat Australia though because Ana won her match and then Djoko/Ana beat the Tomic team in the doubles. Tight match that was!

Tomic looked good. Serve looks much improved, and the forehand moving away from you is always unsettling.

Tomic has already defeated Djokovic in the exibition in 2009 I think, pretty convincingly , but still has not won an official match!

    Ignore him!

Last time they played on hard was Canada and Djoko destroyed him easily but I expect Tomic to be extra pumped at AO. He had a good run last year.

Tomic has some strange hitting, it seems he barely hits the ball but produces a deep heavy ball.

I just watched this match and there's nothing especially improved in Tomic's game at all imo. Djokovic was just playing at 80%, if that. The first set was a series of makeable shots hit into the net or out by Djokovic and barely any stamping of authority on the match by Tomic.

Still, you win any way you can.

Funny how Djokotards lapped it up when Eeyore was beating Ferrer to a pulp in another exo in Abu Dhabi, but this doesn't count because only a percentage of Eeyore actually showed up. Funny stuff.

I think Tomic's forehand had a little bit more topspin and depth than usual and he employed it well at just the right moment to win quite a few points.

But perhaps most of all for me his brain didn't go walkabout at crucial moments during the match, something that was more evident when he played Haas and came back in the first and third sets.

If he maintains the same composure against Seppi and has a decent win then I think it is fair to give Tomic some credit for taking his game in the right direction.

    BIG results =

    1. Win
    2. Against great opponents
    3. When 2 men struggle to win
    4. At great, high visibility/importance events
    * Disclaimer 99% true

I am very happy for the talented player Tomic, mostly because he was given a stress-free first class opportunity to manage criticism constructively.

That said, don't really know which ones of the 4 points to tick.
I was already sth. of a fan, but I'll be following more closely.

    And one more thing.
Tomic has a "dirtier" mind compared to Murray.
Great asset in tennis, hope it does not get wasted.

Too late for excuses, since we already saw Tomic vs Djokovic at Wimbledon 2011. Nobody gave Djokovic more trouble than Tomic did.

Except for the part where Nadal breadsticked Djokovic.....

But Tomic had the tightest 4th set of any player vs Djokovic at that Wimbledon.

Yeah yeah yeah, Novak only gave 80%, 60%, 50%, WHATEVER. If he didn't care about the match, so why then he asked for all the balls to be changed during his opening serve? Why would he complained to the umpire about the balls?? He kept hitting the balls long and Tomic hit it harder and in and it was bothering Novak.

If novak only gave his 60%, then do you think Tomic gave 200%???? Tomic looked more relaxed in that match. Nole knows he was in trouble and he started smiling and goofing around to cover his *** and blaming the balls for his errors.

Tomic was so much quicker to serve and Djoker took FOREVER to serve....which only meant that Tomic was more in a relaxed mood than the Djoker. If Djoker only gave his 60%, Bernie looked like he only gave his 40%...yet his forehands were lethal and deadly, made Djoker's forehands looked like moonballs.

Novak is clearly a counterpuncher... which makes him uncomfortable against the junk-hitting (compliment) Tomic.

Slices, change of pace, balls up the middle etc... it seemed like lack of rhythm screwed with Novak.

I bet this type of play would work against Murray as well, Andy also being a rhythm counter puncher. These guys both live for balls w/ spin and pace, running from side to side and chasing everything down. Maybe Fed should mix it up more against these guys...
