I play with a mixed-doubles group on Sunday and we just tear it up, have a great time. Obviously there's plenty of "trash talking" going on, which all of us participate in. But one guy - I'll call him Bernie (actually his name is Bernie) - has an annoying habit of calling the score "for me". I'm very disciplined about calling the score before I serve, after years of playing league. But he loves to loudly call the score for everyone, first and second serves. Like, "second serve, love thirty", just as I'm about to serve. I don't normally announce "second serve", I'm hoping everyone's paying attention the first time I call out the score. I think he does it to get under my skin, because he doesn't tend to do this if he's serving, and behind. Bernie'd never call out "love - 40" on his own serve!

Question - is there a rule about your opponent calling the score? And if your opponent calls "second serve" or talks while you're in service motion?

My opponent blinks too loud. Is this a form of cheating?

EDIT: Your opponent probably has to announce the score loudly to be heard over the grunting.

    LOL!

These threads are killing me. Seriously... KILLING ME! I am laughing so hard right now. Why are we even playing tennis if things like this distract us?

I've taken it upon myself to state the score, even when I'm not the server. (I don't call out "second serve", though. That seems to be going too far.)

Alot of times, no one ever sez the score, for me it's easy to keep score by myself. Inevitably, an argument starts over the score. After that, I think somebody should announce the score if the server's not going to do it, and they're not competent to keep track on their own.

According to my plasticized card version of the "ON-COURT RULES", excerpted from "THE CODE", it says:

"To avoid controversy over the score, the Server should announce the set score (e.g., 5-4) before starting a game and the game score (e.g., thirty-forty) prior to serving each point."

If the server doesn't do this, after being asked to, and if it's someone who I know isn't good at keeping track of the score or cheats on the score, I'll call out the score for them.

Isn't it interesting how when people make mistakes over the score, the 'mistake' is always in their favor?

Agreed. But it's the same reason why everyone who plays this sport thinks they're better than they are - the good stuff gets remembered, the bad stuff forgotten (very quickly).

If I couldn't forget my bad shots in tennis, I'd have quit a long time ago! In fact I'd deal myself a major waffle-face each and every morning.

Seriously, I would suggest golf for you. You always make your own call and you don't even have to play with anyone.

I'm a scratch golfer when I'm by myself......shoot around 90-100 when others are around. Just can't figure it out.

    Potential for rotten golf

I like golf, and have always said when my knees finally "go" I'll take it up seriously. Right now - only have time for one sport! So I play tennis 5-6 days a week. You'd think I'd be better by now.... I'm sure I'll suck at golf just as much, but you gotta play something!
