In a few slams in the past years there have been better matches where the champion was tested earlier on against an opponent far better, at least I think, than the runner-up. Bear in mind Champions have bad rounds here or there and make the final look easier since they go into top gear.

Roland Garros 09 Fed vs Del Potro SF (5 sets, Del Potro could have beaten Nadal that year also)

Australian Open 05 Fed vs Safin SF (5 sets, Safin brushes aside Hewitt for an easy win in the final)

May be ao2010, fed-Davy or is that too harsh on Murray?

Hewitt was leading 6-1 3-6 4-1 in that final. It was not easy at all for Safin.

Still, the Fed-Safin semi feels like the true final.

Don't you want to consider an overall better quality match (the "Real" final) irrespective of who was tested : the champion or the runner up.

Fed - Djoker Roland Garros 2011 SF was epic for more reasons than one. The final turned out to be a damp squib in comparison.

2005 FO semi between Fed-Nads seemed like a bigger match than Nadal-Puerta in the actual final

2003 encounter between Ferrero and Gonzalez at RG.

And Escude put in a decent effort against Agassi at the '03 AO, considering how imperious the American was in his other rounds.

only in retrospect. at the time the time the final was pretty much a pick 'em(Hewitt may have even been the favorite, he was ranked higher than Safin, & only lost to Fed in non clay majors in '04, it was considered a big opportunity for him).
and Fed was expected to blow out Safin, I certainly don't recall anyone calling that the 'true final' at the time.

now in 2000, pretty much everyone agreed that the Sampras-Agassi AO SF was the true final. No one gave Kafelnikov a chance in the final.

in 2002, the AO was ravaged with upsets & the winner of the 4th round Sampras-Safin match was considered the favorite for the title. Safin was upset by Johansson in the final.
