Very surprising. I have no idea what happened. I know that he supposedly transferred from Illinois because he needed more scholarship money, among other issues. He was also suspended from a few matches earlier this year, with no details given.

A successful pro career is a long shot. I hope he is still in school and about to graduate and move on with life.

You'd think he could at least wait until the end of the season since that is only a few weeks away. So, it had to be fairly serious issues with coach and/or teammates. I guess it could be something like a family emergency as well, but for some reason I don't think that's it. Illinois could sure use him. The NCAA should allow one "express transfer" per year. Lol.

And UVA's path to the championship gets even better.

Georgia played and won some matches without Singh this year, but a national title is out of the question, and living up to their seed is pretty unlikely, also.

Pretty surprising. I wonder if it's related to why he missed so much of the season earlier in the year.

Georgia will probably lose to Oklahoma now.

not past OU probably - and Wake might give them a decent challenge now

but let's be honest - this team wasn't a title contender with KU to begin with - maybe they would have made semis, maybe, but only because the other top 8 seed in their section of the draw was Ole Miss who didn't even make the quarters of their conference tournie

adios KU - good luck on tour - lol

KU has a shot of cracking the top 300 or 250 if he decides to commit to the ATP.

fantastic - so he can make as much as the average mcdonald's employee - except with massive travel and coaching and stringing expenses - brilliant guy if that is his career plan, diaz will be laughing at his jackass decision to abandon the team - his quote about the team being more together seems suggestive of KU's personality, one that i always thought was likely during last year watching him do an entire variety show while yelling "BREAK ON THREE!!!!" or whatever court he was on any time he got a break in a singles match

clearly i don't like him (yes, i know, Duke is not without an in-your-face personality or two - i do my best to tolerate them since they're in Durham), the fact that this means the SEC will do even worse in the tourney is a bonus

again, good riddance KU, i haven't been this excited that someone is gone from college tennis since alex clayton

Duke started the "break on X court" or "set on X court" in the early 2000s. True story.

Don't blame KU for this everyone. Blame the people around him. Coach Diaz has been terrible at dealing with the situation this year.

I'm sure most players know the cost of a tennis career and the slim chance of "making it" as a pro. As long as they know this, I don't think there's anything wrong with them trying. I mean, there has to be someone ranked below the Top 100 or 150. So, yes, I'd criticize Singh for leaving the team, but not for pursuing a pro career - at least for a while.

The team "unity" quote throws Singh right under the bus. Don't have to do much reading between the lines there.

As far as antics go, both UGa and Duke have a long way to go to catch up with the Buckeyes.

haha, funny if true, like all "which college started this cheer?" or "which college did this urban legend start at?"...ummm, i'm a little skeptical of anyone who thinks they have an origin pinned down for sure - but maybe

true, i would pop a bottle if Ty Tucker left the sport also

any good teams have some big on court egos - but at least most coaches are grown up enough to not lead the charge and sanction that type of behavior - certainly Diaz is a good coach and ambassador for college tennis even if he's a little bit of a shady recruiter with nearly an annual poaching season license in the state of Texas and elsewhere

I have heard that from some former Clemson players who played then back before UVA when Clemson and Duke used to battle for the ACC. But Duke could have taken it from someone else.

this was KU's facebook post last wednesday.
2 down, 8 to go. talking about exams.

can you do what he did btw with no possible consequences?

take athletic scholarship money, complete your studies, then abandon the team during the season???

can diaz and UGA go after him financially???

Very interesting question. I would actually think they really couldn't go after him financially. Obviously, money is involved with a scholarship, but it's not really a pay-for-play contract. Unless, he signed something that says he has to pay back the dollar value of the scholarship unless he finishes the season (with exceptions of course - injury, family emergency, etc.) I don't see it happening. It's simply the risk universities take in providing scholarships for athletes.

    Anyone else know about this?

How can he do that to his team? Something must be very wrong if he cannot not even wait until the season ends.

Since no one seems to know why he left the team, based on the article, sounds like he took one to many liberties with practice and Manny finally snapped.

Maybe, but it seems unlikely to me because of the timing. The timing sounds like a player who is done with college, done with college tennis, might have personal conflicts with the coach and/or teammates, and decides to leave. A coach in a high-pressure program can put up with a player for another twelve days.

You would think coach could deal with it short term. In similar fashion, expect some other minor (not top 5 team that I know of) match impacting developments come Friday.

Unfortunately, sounds like what a lot of high level D1 tennis players are - selfish, spoiled, don't care one bit about the investment that should be made to their teammates, coaches, school, has no concept of what the word loyalty means, etc.

Fortunately, there aren't too many of these guys that go to the extent of what he's doing. Low class to say the least. I could be wrong, and there could be extenuating circumstances, but I'd highly doubt it. That said, Manny has to take a little bit of a hit for letting him get away with so much garbage along the way.

This is just one guy. I for one am purely speculating on KU's departure. Even then I bet I'm right. We'll see.

Not making excuses but we all know tennis is an individual sport. At the highest level many players have highly developed games. Often these players come with quirks, idiosyncrasies and ways of going about the game in unique ways. Not saying this is bad. Often for coaches to adapt to all the personalities and create a team is extremely challenging. Most of the times players work out, sometimes they don't.

How much scouting of other school's players goes on in college tennis? I've heard how Diaz actively purses other school's players to get them to transfer. I don't know how accurate that is though. Maybe Diaz' method of bringing in disgruntled players from other schools has come back to bite him at the worst possible time.

Who knows. Maybe this was best for both sides to make a break. You don't want to have to rely on a player who has mentally checked out. I bet they rally and make the quarters but anything beyond that will be very tough.

Okay so now what can Diaz do in the UGa single's lineup?
Can Pasha or Pieters jump to #1, or does this mandate a chain effect, everyone play up one spot?
If there is any good news, this won't affect double's pairings, since Singh was not listed on the official double's lineup.

Everybody else moves up one spot so Wagland goes to 1 for only the 2nd time this year. It'll end up being a similar lineup to what we put out at the National Indoors because KU didn't play there either. Wagland has more upside so he has a better shot of winning at 1 as opposed to Pasha but it's going to be tough against someone like Oklahoma - assuming we get past Wake which I think we will even without KU.
