Question for the self employed coaches out there -

If i do a qualification for my job and claim back the cost towards my tax rebate.

My uncle mentioned as its a course for my job this may be possible - just need to know if this is doable ?

My Hoag arrived this morning, its all nice and shiny (sure it wont stay that way for long)

Adidas balls arrive tomorrow so will give my thoughts on them.

Aggro, when I looked at this a while back (5+yrs ago) when I was contracting my understanding was that it had to be a "refresher" or update of skills required to continue trading or maintain existing business. It could not be for the "acquisition of new skills"). In short if it's a new qualification probably not.

It is also different if you are incorporated as a one man company vs if you are an individual.

It's been a while since I've dealt with this (and I tried to forget that stuff as soon as possible!!) and it's a particularly tricky area as:
    - How do you define new skills vs upgrading existing?
    - Can elements of the course be expenses but not others?
    - Are expenses (fuel, use of car etc...) to attend deductible etc...

so to avoid any problems I would definitely spend the small amount of money and ask a tax accountant.

    Cheers orig.

I've got a meeting with the family accountant soon so hopefully this will make things nice and clear about what i can/cannot claim back etc etc.

Joe, if the course is CPD then you can claim it back against tax, along with any equipment you buy to use in the delivery of your business, or services which you use in running your business; % of your phone, fuel, rent/gas/electricity (because you do have a home office right ;-) ) and so on.

    Cheers

If you have a home office does it make your council tax change?
What did you all find about things like car insurance? When i told my company i was coaching i was lumped as a pro sportsman and the premiums lept! That still the case?

The finals are Saturday morning and it's free to watch.
I've seen some matches most days. The standard is ridiculously good, it makes me wonder how good the top ten are as they would moonwalk past these guys.

I couldn't tell you to be honest. I think the best bet is to either look for it on the LTA website or possibly the Sandwell leisure trust website.
I'm going to try and sneakily film a bit of it so I'll post it up here if anyone was interested.

No, I don't think it affects your council tax charge, just services which directly affect the running of your business.

Car insurance wise, you need to put your occupation as "coach - non-professional sports" if you put professional, as you saw, your premiums rocket!!!

    What's your tension?

Just curious what tensions everyone here in the UK is presently playing? Also, will you tighten up higher a few months hence in warmer weather?

    I suck!!

Just watched a video of myself playing and I am soooooo embarrassed! I look horrid! Nothing like I thought I looked like. It looked awful, simply awful!

I know not everyone can look like Roger Federer but man, I remind myself of a drowning daddy-long-leg spider. All gangly limbs and very little coordination.

I know some will say the end product is what matters - my shots seem to do what they should but, man, it's been very discouraging. My serve form is embarrassing, I think people who compliment my serve and cannot return it must suck as much as I do.

Meags, I know you're much taller than I am, how do you get your knees to bend? My left arm comes out appropriately for balance but gets tucked in as my right arm swings. Not a good look. Losing so much control and power by being so uncoordinated.

I'm too ashamed to post a vid.....

Be glad it's not the other way around.

I look great on court, like Fed, only more handsome. Too bad most of my shots fail completely.

At the moment 25/26kg is my standard tension, though as I play with a different string each week I do vary tension slightly accordingly. For example, two weeks ago I was hitting with Head Sonic Pro and as it's a softer poly, I went up to 25.5/26/5kg. Last week I played with Babolat Ballistic and I went at 25/26kg. This week I will be hitting with Polyfibre TCS and will probably string it at 26/27kg. I'll only up the tension in the summer if it gets really hot, like 30 degrees.

you seen my vid?! im not the most gracious of players and being tallish (6'2") i really have to push myself in matches to have a constant knee bend. During hit sessions and friendly sets i rarely bother.

Me and my friend were talking though - and you never really think to yourself 'he looks a bit weird when he plays that' when your playing a match. i really don't think it matters how you play, what matters is the end result.

I think i'm at 51lbs full poly atm. I think i'm going to go back to a hybrid setup though, only if the poly power 1.20 goes really well in a full setup will i consider sticking to it.

When i'm back in hybrid form i'll probably go back to around 55lbs.

Trying out the new adidas tour balls today first in a few coaching sessions then an adult mix in group where i'll probably have to join in so will get up some thoughts later and compare it to the Head ATP ball which i have just finished using.

On another side note - health and nutrition modification is going quite well go into a routine of taking the dog for a good fast 30min walk, having a weights session just before lunch, coaching in the afternoon and running/boxing in the evening.

Just past the "i don't wanna do this any more" stage now into the feeling good healthy stage!

Haha how do i get my knees to bend :)

Yesterday morning coaching session in a force gale getting miffed at the lack of continuity i was missing overheads and volleys as the ball decided to go sideways at the last minute! I was swatting without any technique id of loved to have seen a vid looking like a 3yr old with a racket.
My serve my coach says looks like a pro. My strokes are good but i can get lazy and rushed and being a big gangly bloke i suppose at times can look ridiculous. My volleys have improved no end and I've managed to stop wristy rich sneaking out and looking like a right noob.

I'm playing with black code at 55lbs in an APD GT.
I usually play indoors and definitely won't switch for the outdoor doubles matches this season.

Re Sonic, yes, I personally thought it was pretty decent generally, though lacking in spin a tad for me. I also thought there was something almost 'multi-ish' about it... a slightly different poly for me and my tastes, but nonetheless one that I quite liked.

Re tensions... ah, I see I'm not alone @ the low 50s range.

Currently Klip Legend 17g hybrid with Bab Addiction at 60/58. I don't change tension for the summer here as I don't feel it gets hot enough to make any difference. I used to in US though and I do in Portugal but I think that has more to do with the red clay than anything else.

EDIT: Qatar was ridiculous (48c when I was playing in August, about 40 at 8pm when I would play), then I had the poly up in the 60s which is TIGHT for me

Testing Lux M2 125 at 54 at the moment also to see if a return to poly could be made soonish

Tyger reflex in one at some tension or other and nat.gut/spin-x in another at around 58/55, forget what's in the third frame!

    Need lessons...

I've decided to commit to proper 1-1 tennis lessons.

I've always played on instinct and reflex, picking up things here and there.

Played with a coach the other day (what does CCQ mean?), long hitting session and I was exposed. My footwork, shoulder turn, swing etc were all poor. I'm told the potential for a good game is there just fundamentals missing.

It also turns out my beloved Donnay Pro One 95 might not be for me. Coach said it was probably too heavy given my swing etc.

I was about to buy another Pro One and now have to rethink. Prob is, I love it! The stability is the number one draw for me. No twisting and I can block hard shots with confidence.

    Decisions.....

EDIT: does anyone know how the nBlade compares to the Donnays?

Just strung up some Polyfibre TCS for when I play this afternoon. Went at 26/27kg. Felt rather soft to string with and I'm wondering whether I needed an extra half kilo. Certainly a very interesting colour; kind of like a fluorescent yellow. Wasn't a huge fan of the last Polyfibre string I used, so will be interesting to see how it plays.

I live in N. London and it's been like living in Minsk or somewhere since about September. I do not recall such an unremitting, grim, depressing and unending winter. Anyhow, at least yesterday I could actually remove my scarf whilst playing.:)

Another qsn re frames sent to the UK/import taxes, etc...

If someone sends a frame from New Zealand and/or Australia, do you run the risk of getting randomly clobbered big-time on import tax and the like, as happens from the States? Or is it more like when frames come from within the Eu and the tax is low or even non-existent?

hmm, not sure - is that what he/she lists as a qualification? I'm guessing it's probably senior Club Coach Qualification as that's the only LTA qualification with those initials in!

So, hit for a couple of hours with Polyfibre TCS 1.20 this afternoon. I was right that I needed more tension; 26/27kg was just a little too loose. Really quite powerful for a poly, which was nice on serve, but meant I had to hold back a little on groundstrokes. All in all, it was very similar to the other Polyfibre string (Cobra) that I tested. I have a couple more sets of other Polyfibre strings, so next time I know to go either 26.5/27.5 or 27/28.

Dont make any decisions untill you've tried a blade, they're nice but nothing grabbed me about them.Has coach said what he thinks is hurting you or was a blade his idea?Worth a try.
Just seen Ash' comment and the club coach qualification is all i can think of too.
If its outside the EU you'll probably get hit for everything.you seen the prestige pro tgk on the bay?

Can anyone confirm if this is true as I have not seen any articles on this, one the bay are 2 Head Youtek Speed Pros that I am currently looking at, the only problem is one weighs 350strung the other 335 strung (confirmed through private message with the seller) he also seems to think or read some where that there is an asian version and a US version of the head youtek speed pro?

I have checked quite a few sites and the Speed Pros weight about 350 grams strung.

    any ideas?

Will try to pick up an nBlade on the cheap. His idea was another brand.

I've tried lighter raqs and it was an unpleasant experience. 100% graphite and solid feel for me IMHO.

I'll give this coach a try and see how far I get with the lessons.
