it all depends on what you are looking for. if you want friendship, better looking chicks (with nice ***), 3.5 is the way to go. if you like men or men-looking gals, 4.5 is the way to go.

tennis was and will always be a game. back in the days, there were no TV. so u played soccer or a little ball.

    take it easy bru

That's like saying the only thing that separates a concert pianist from a Chopsticks-level beginner is mechanics. It's just not true.

Of course everything ultimately revolves around differences in technical ability-- but those differences in skill fundamentally change the game. They create new possibilities (like dictating a point with pace, spin and placement) and remove others (like bunting the ball back and waiting for the error). Yes the rules and the object are the same, but that's hardly the whole story.

First, I doubt this is true. Second, it's meaningless even if true, since a big part part of the challenge is managing to hang in the rally to hit those 4 shots, and against a 5.0 that's going to be a very, very different proposition than it is against a 3.0.

Taking liberty with what Bruce Lee said:

Before I studied the tennis, a forehand to me was just like a forehand, a serve just like a serve. After I learned tennis, a forehand was no longer a forehand, a serve no longer a serve. Now that I've understood tennis, a forehand is just like a forehand, a serve just like a serve.

The trolls are strong on the boards lately.

I disagree with the OP. I play with quite a few 4.5 players and none put down even the 3.0 players. I think ppl that say they are above 4.5 and insult 3.0-3.5 players as NOT playing tennis probably aren't nearly as good as they think.

I think the big gap in rec tennis is 3.5 vs 4.0 - and not 4.5. FWIW..

4.0 league players are guys who LOOK like very good tennis players if you see them in person and don't watch a lot of pro tennis up close, IMHO.

Anything below 4.0 tends to be variations of hackers. I think below 4.0 almost anything 'works'. You hack your way to winning tennis with pattycake serves and groundstrokes built on gravity based 'moonball slices'.

4.0 actually is the 'magic' number because 'junk' doesn't work on legit 4.0s IMHO. Sure they can lose to an actual counterpuncher.. But these guys don't lose to people who have awful mechanics and dysfunctional 'footwork."

All that being said that doesn't mean people who don't play at the 4.0 level don't know tennis..That's the silly part of this thread.

Sure, I would be happy to help you.

    The short answer is

< is less than because it is used when the sentence would look like

    ____ is less than _____.

    > is the greater than symbol because it is used when the sentence would be

    _____ is greater than _____.

And no time to read the math web link either, to see I'm right.

That's okay, it's my mistake assuming that others are as astute and as keen observers as me. (especially when judging tennis acuity)

keep thinking that way and it's a sure way to make it to 4.0 for life and maybe tease the bottom of 4.5.

Jesus Christ I laughed so loud I woke up my wife. Zomg!!! You got me in trouble haha!

This thread is train wreck...with more trains piling in.

If what the op said was true this would invalidate 99.9% of everything posted here. This in itself is hilarious.

The amount of trolls in this forum is astounding and totally defeats the purpose but it's highly entertaining.

Yes amazing isn't it! Into another dreadful swamp mire of stupidity.

It's too bad those people in the racquet post knew nothing about Head or the lineage of the prestige. So much garbage so little time.

If you want to hit with the cute women - I think you want to be a 4.0 or 4.5. Girls want the guys on the mixed doubles to rip big serves and smack hard groundstrokes (though not directly at them when they are at the net..)

There are no cute women in club tennis. The cute women end with college tennis. By the time a woman is an established club player, either coming from a college or a recreational background, the cuteness is long gone.

    OP is right and wrong.
He is right that below a certain level, few really understand tennis.
He is wrong about the cutoff level. I think it should be 5.5 and above.

Only players who really understand tennis are D1 level college players and above.

My 15 year old daughter is a 4.0 (according to her private coach) and consistently gets 3 games per set off of her 5.5 former D1 high school coach. They play every Friday. She also plays the same against her 5.5 private coach, although a suspect he gives her confidence building points. The point is the biggest difference I see when I watch her play her high school coach is consistency and shot selection. That's not to imply that everything else is a wash. It's not. Her coach does everything better, and the differences add up to a lot but I don't see a night and day difference separating them. I see another year and a half of hard work on my daughters part.

This would go with my theory that the real difference is between those trained as junior players and those who take up the game as adults.

Understanding this sport is easy. It should only take a little passion.

It's DOING that is difficult and indefinite, all the way to Nadal, Djokovic, Federer levels. That's why those guys are still trying to get to the top but never seem reachable.

Not to derail this thread into yet another endless NTRP debate... but I don't see how those ratings can be accurate if she's getting 3 games per set consistently (assuming coach is trying his best). Those scores would be typical of a .5 difference, not a 1.5 I think.

    (Cf. no way will a 3.0 consistently get 3 games off a 4.5, or a 2.5 off a 4.0).

Yes! I mean do 4.5s have to sleep in hotels? Do they get mobbed for autographs. Do they have to take press conferences and deal with the media? Do they have to make the family sacrifices that travel brings?

Tennis as a livelyhood spent competing must be very very different than normal tennis or even the 5.5 life spent coaching kids.

To reach tennis enlightenment you must first understand the Way of Tennis. Start with fully reading and fully understanding Chapter 1:

The Tennis that can be spoken is not the eternal Tennis
The name that can be named is not the eternal name
The nameless is the origin of the Ball and the Racquet
The named is the mother of myriad strokes
Thus, constantly without desire, one observes its essence
Constantly with desire, one observes its manifestations
These two emerge together but differ in name
The unity is said to be the mystery
Mystery of mysteries, the door to all wonders.

Few have achieved perfect enlightenment alone.
Seek the guidance of her Holiness Kimiko Date-Krumm.
    That is all.

Aimee kern is the coach's name. D1 tennis scholership to Albany. Look her up. 5.5 rated. As far as my daughter, I can only go by the rating her private coach gives her.

I believe Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones was a good junior player as a kid. Probably was at least a 4.5 (when not totally drugged up). So at least one 4.5 knows what real tennis is like.

good point! I hear Lars of Metallica was a really good tennis player but not pro level. So now there are 2.

I can relate to Andre. I personally know about the hair loss stuff at least. And I did cover 12 states with 75% travel so maybe I might qualify myself :)
