Today, the US was drawn to play Belgium in the World Group playoffs Sept. 23-25. Belgium, as host, and will pick the venue.

Other relegation matches on the same weekend:

2004 champion Spain — which lost 4-1 to Slovakia in the first round — will play at Italy. (Home team first) Switzerland vs. Britain, India vs. Sweden, Czech Republic vs. Germany, Chile vs. Pakistan, Canada vs. Belarus and Austria vs. Ecuador.

The winning teams advance to the 16-nation World Group for 2006. The losers will play in zonal groups.

Sounds like a tough but winnable tie for the US. Belgium has the Rochuses and Malisse - they're capable of producing some brilliant tennis sometimes, and they'll probably choose a slow court since all the US players are fastcourt players except for the Bryans and possibly Spadea.

But US should get through this, unless Roddick melts down completely.

Germany vs. the Czechs should be a brutal match, can't really call a winner there.

Canada vs. Belarus - serve and volley paradise, good draw for Belarus.
