    Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.
'Your son is here,' she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened...

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack,
he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside
    the oxygen tent.

    He reached out his hand.
The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's
limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit
    beside the bed.

All through the night the young Marine sat there
in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand
and offering him words of love and strength

Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine
    move away and rest awhile.

    He refused.

Whenever the nurse came into the ward,
the Marine was oblivious of her
and of the night noises of the hospital -

the clanking of the oxygen tank,
the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings,
the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse.

While she did what she had to do, he waited.
    Finally, she returned.

She started to offer words of sympathy,
    but the Marine interrupted her.

'Who was that man?' he asked.
    The nurse was startled,
'He was your father,' she answered.
'No, he wasn't,' the Marine replied.
'I never saw him before in my life.'
'Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?'

'I knew right away there had been a mistake,
but I also knew he needed his son, and his
    son just wasn't here.
When I realized that he was too sick to tell
whether or not I was his son,
knowing how much he needed me, I stayed.'

The next time someone needs you ... just be there. Stay.

Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia bettered his personal best time to win the ***uoka international men's marathon for a second year running.

The 22-year-old Kebede left the last challenger and compatriot, Dereje Tesfaye, at around the 33-kilometre mark and made a long solo running to cross the finishing line in two hours, five minutes, 18 seconds.

"I was able to run faster than I had expected. I'm very, very happy about it," said Kebede, whose previous best time was 2:05:20 set at the London marathon this season.

It was the ninth-fastest time in the world and a new meet record, beating the previous mark of 2:06:10 he set when he won the same event last season.

In other news, Malakas attained GOAT-lihood and I totally missed the event and the celebrations that must have followed.

Do we call you "Saint Malakas" now :)

ps. you've left me in the dust, Sani (post-count wise).

Mother has begun walking a bit, but the doc says it will be *many* months before she's okay - its ostopor...sis.

I did see those posts (in another thread) where you (sani) were called a troll and someone said "he". You certainly have been on a _rampage_ locking horns with all and sundry :)

I've actually been doing some work last coupla months, so my addiction to this forum is lessening (or rather shifted back to my field). But i do check the posts of my fav posters every day!

I recently dreamed I was eating a mushroom crepe in Paris while walking to the Musée d'Orsay. It really wasn't a very interesting dream.

Glad to hear your mom is doing better, Sentinel. How is your shoulder and have been able to play tennis recently?

I have relocated to a place that does not have a tennis facility. Due to relocation, had to stop the physiotherapy too. Shoulder much better but weak - can't lift anything about shoulder, and some blockage if i mimic serve motion -- I've been too lazy to do any exercises and strengthening but then looking after both Mum and Dad (both have been hospitalized recently -- in turns) hasn't left me much time.

Yes, sani, i will be back full steam during the AO (but ofcourse only for Sania Mirza matches :) )

This has been going on for years not now.Mostly affected are the americans and not only the wilds, even commercial beehives were severely affected. The CCD is not so undetermined as this article says.It has to do with a virus and a parasite. But also environmental factors like pollution and pesticides.

This is a picture taken directly above these camels in the desert at sunset.

It is considered one of the best pictures of the year. Look closely, the camels are the little white lines in the picture. The black you see are just the shadows!!

A panel of experts, after a lengthy conference, have determined that Dmitry Tursunov lacks the musical gifts of Dmitri Shostakovich, but Tursunov would stand an excellent chance of beating Shostakovich (even before he died) in a best-of-five grass court match. They also determined that the edge went to Shostakovich on clay.
