Novak struggled to beat Fed in 2011 and almost lost and still beat Nadal in 4. Im gonna say Novak in 4 but i wont be surprised if im wrong.

Novak was faking that because Nadal had his game? Or Novak was faking Nadal out, when Nadal should have gotten him in 3, 4 at the most? Come on, you seem to like having it any way you want it.

I more or less agree with this. Novak/Stan was excepting cuz it was 5 sets but was nice in bursts. The score line shows that.

Exactly, much of Novak's chances on Monday lie in his ability to exploit the chinks in Rafa's mental armor. Despite Rafa's recent success against Novak, he'll never be able to get 2011 completely out of his head. Once Rafa's "god-mode" level drops, Djokovic will be able to pounce and take a set or two (he'll need to take two to win). Rafa most likely gets his second wind in the middle of the fouth set and pushes it to 5. Novak will then probably need another drop in Rafa's level in the fifth to pull off the victory.

So a lot of stuff needs to go Novak's way. But I have a feeling he'll get it done. :)

Now that I think about it, a fifth set break would probably mentally destroy the loser of the match...

Nadal has already won it. He just needs to show up on Monday...It's just a formality at this point...The SF has taken out too much out of Djokovic :-(

Don't know. Djokovic seems to have some strange recovery powers at times. Remember the war with Wawrinka at AO with Djokovic coming into the next match with Berdych with no ill effects? Going 5 with Federer in 2011 and beating Nadal in 4 in the final at USO.
    Will be interesting.

It could be a repeat of W 2013 except I think hard court is a more comfortable surface for Djoko than grass. He recovered very well at AO after the Wawa marathon.
ETA: people predicting a straight set match are insulting both players. Neither of these guys is gonna throw the towel without a fight.

If Nadal uses Uncle Toni tactics, he will lose. If Nadal uses the tactics he used in Montreal and Cincy, he will win. I thin that's where it all happens. Rafa has been playing Toni tennis, not Montreal/Cincy tennis.

Nah...Nadal is riding high on confidence at the back of the most successful hard court season...This coupled with the fact that he had the easiest road to the finals, is just going to too much...Even for Novak....Hope he proves me wrong and comes out strong to beat him.

Wrong. Novak the king of hardcourts who hasn't won anything after Nadal's return?

We all know who the current king of hardcourts is? It's Nadal unfortunately...Don't believe? Go ask McEnroe.

If you want togo by form Rafa should have won wimbledon.

If you were to go by form Novak should not have made past semis. He has lost to the likes of Haas,& Isner. This is just a pure match up issue and purely depends on ho well they play that day.

No question, Nadal has had great run, but his one victory over novak in best of 3 with tie breaker in 3rd set is not a gret a indicator.

Novak knows what to expect from Nadal and will prevail in best of 5. He shud be alright stamina wise (my opinion).

Novak will pin down Nadal on his BH. Only thing that I'm worried is that I haven't seen any significant damage from his BH DTL

Well, we will see on Monday. Today, Nadal seemed to have lost his mojo, even though his SF win was easier than Novaks. I now wonder if Tio Toni is stripping from Nadal what he did in Montreal/Cincy. I hope not. I also don't see Nadal permanently damaged by Novak, like others do. Right now, Novak sounds like he did before the FO loss to Nadal.

Look like we have another mini jinxer version of Clarky here

Dude, I'm just stating the facts...Nadal has swept everything since his return on hard courts...Based on this Novak is going in as the underdog int he final.

This is true. Nadal has NOT played anywhere close to the way he did in Montreal. In Montreal, Nadal was very aggressive with DTL and I/o forehand. He constantly changed direction and never backed off on his backhand side. He was pushing Djokovic from side to side and coming to the net at every opportunity.

In contrast, he's been relatively passive at the Open. Today he was just AWFUL against Gasquet. No penetration on forehand, standing too far back on ROS, playing safe and overspinning backhand. Like the Nadal of 2009.

What changed between Montreal and UsOpen 2013? Toni.

Awful is very relative. He won in straight sets... (and he never played as awful as Novak did in his semi's first set! I don't think he could have if he had tried lol)
To me his shots are heavier and his serve currently more reliable than Novak's. But of course any slam match between these 2 is a toss up, especially on hard court. We all know that on clay, Rafa is the clear favorite.

Some things that give me consolation:
Djokovic wins the US Open 100% of the time when he comes in as the no. 1 seed.
Nadal hasn't beaten him 5 set on hard since 2010.

I think Djokovic's more difficult match gives him an edge. Physically he'll be fine and he'll play at a higher gear right from the start. I just hope it's not windy.

Novak in 3 str8. Nadal was 6-4,7-6 against a 'no forehand' Gasquet. Compared to Gasquet, Novak has a better forehand, better backhand, better serve, better speed, better stamina, better returns, better volleys, better defence, and only worse overheads :) .

How is it that every time Djokovic is about to play some big final he's coming in physically weaker/more tired because of some crazy 5 setter in the semis?

    Every. fking. time.

Actually, thinking about it the wind is a huge factor. If it's windy, Novak is at a big disadvantage.

    Every time? Short memory?

At the AO, Djokovic rolled into the Final after destroying Ferrer in like an hour while Murray played a 4 hour SF against Federer.

Djokovic should be happy that the USO's horrific scheduling will give him 2 days to recover.

Remember that AO '12 semi Djokovic played Murray? Yeah, he still beat Nadal in the final. So don't count him out. Although, I want Nadal to win. I think he deserves it, especially I never see him play so well on hard courts this year. Not to mention winning 3 MS HC alone. Impressive for a clay-courter.

Edit: Oh for the voting, hmm...I say I'd give the edge to Rafa in 4.

+1 I agree. Time, after time, after time...
At the same time Nadal is having ridiculously easy cakewalk clown draws. It is tome for the lady luck to turn against Nadal in the final. Enough is enough.

Rafa is the favorite on a hard court USO final vs a #1 player. The tennis world is so different from what it was 5 yrs ago!

I think that is one of the main things it will come down to. Conditions will play a huge outcome in the final. If it is a nice day with little wind I think it is anyone's match to win. If we have 15-20 mph winds Rafa will be way too much for him. Novak is not the same player in the wind. Stan handled the conditions much better than Novak and it almost won him the match. Remember also how bad Novak looked in the first few sets against Murray last year? In windy conditions he has a hard time being aggressive.

I voted for Nadal in 4, but not a guarantee by any means.

It would be interesting to see what kind of celebration Djokovic does, in the event that he indeed wins the championship.

Will he turn into the Serbian Hulk and wreak havoc on the fans?
