I'm gonna be visiting the states soon and want to order something from amazon while there as it's much cheaper than in the UK. We're staying in a rented apartment but I was wondering what would happen if we weren't in when the mail(post) man came. Would it go back to a depot and I could collect it? If so would I need to proof I lived at the apartment? In the UK you can use your passport to collect stuff but if I need proof of address it probably wouldn't work.

Generally, if the shipper does not specify that a delivery signature is required, USPS will just leave the package at the door if no one is at home.

If the package is insured and the mailman does not think it prudent to leave the package, he will leave a notice of attempted delivery. You would take the notice with some form of ID to the local Post Office to claim the package. As long as the recipient's name matches your ID, the fact that the addresses aren't the same should not matter.

As Amazon should provide you with an online tracking number and since most mailmen deliver at about the same time each day, I would just try to be home on the day tracking indicates the package is out for delivery and save yourself the hassle.

The item I want isn't dispatched by Amazon otherwise that would have been perfect

    Perfect

I've only got six days in New York and I've never been before, waiting in for the postman one of those days isn't too high up my to do list!
