I'll be in Augusta with my team from West GA. I wasn't focused last year, and it showed. Been more in-tune with my game lately, looking forward to a good tournament!

Anyone else have a big weekend coming up?

My qualified out of Rome, GA for it, but we couldn't get 8 people to go. The 3.0 team out of Cartersville won. Congrats guys.

That stinks, especially since y'all were so close for the tournament. I think we had a couple 3.0/3.5 teams from the area do pretty well.

My team is in Augusta this weekend. If we win tomorrow, we're in the semis. Woo!

Our team is solid, but there are a lot of great teams out there, so we'll see what happens. Good luck everyone!

Good weekend, some TOUGH competition out there.

Went 1-3 playing doubles, with all sets being 6-4 or 7-5. Can't get a whole lot closer than that. Had a chance to win one, maybe two of the lost matches, but it wasn't meant to be.

Z-Man, which team was yours? We were in Group 2 out of West GA.

I'm on the Southern Crescent team in Group 4. We beat the Cherokee team this morning in the final. It was a tough one. They had a good team, and we had to battle through two rain delays and come back from down a set and a break. My partner and I ended up pulling it out in a tiebreaker during the last 20min break in the rain. It's great to finally win--I've been close a few times at 4.0 and 8.5 combo, but we've always come up short.

I had a good partner and it helped that we've played together a lot. Sectionals here we come!

Wow, great job! We lost to Cherokee 2-3 on Friday morning. I played #1 doubles, lost that one 4-6, 4-6 and they did their best to keep me out of the points (I LOVE IT when they do that...).

    Good luck at Sectionals!

bcart1991 and Z-Man, I was on the Cherokee team that you guys played, it was a great tourney for us. Good Luck Southern Crescent, you guys have a great team and are good guys, represent us well at sectionals. The West Georgia team had great guys too, enjoyed my matches with both of your teams.

Congrats on a great tournament! I'm glad we were able to play it out instead of tossing a coin--that would have been a tough way to end the season. That one singles player you guys had was a hoss--I'm glad I didn't have to play him. I saw his match against the kid from Columbus--that was a good one! Your #1 doubles team on Monday was solid too, and nice guys to play against. We were lucky to pull that one out. That was by far the best competition I saw all weekend.

I played in Rome this weekend at 3.5. We won our first three matches and then ran into a total sandbag and got waxed. My #1 singles guy who hasn't lost in 2 years (he got moved to 4.0 and hasn't lost there either) ran against a self rated kid who blew him away 2 and 1. The kid proceeded to get blown away by another kid this morning in the semis. Some people need to be ashamed of themselves. I probably sound whiny, maybe I am, but it was ridiculous. The officials need to watch those matches closer.

I've heard about some of these kids there self-rating at 3.5. One of them even has a recruiting video (for colleges I guess) on youtube, kid is easily a 4.5.

On a good note, one of our West GA ladies 3.5 teams is on to the Finals!

Yep. The sandbagging seems to be huge at 3.5. I guess that's where a sandbagger can do the most damage. I didn't see as much on the woman's side. I saw the recruiting video. The team from Atlanta who won were all easily 4.0's probably 4.5's according to my coach. Congrats to your ladies. I'd never seen my guy in a match where he was noncompetitive. The captains of those teams should be disqualified for that crap. We're all moving up to 4.0 so maybe we'll see you next year

Update on the sandbag. USTA Georgia handed out the Dq's today for the 3.5's. The team that won lost both their singles guys and both members of their #1 doubles. The team that got second place lost both their singles and one half of their #1 doubles. The team that beat us to win the group lost two players, #2 singles and a good doubles player who played #3 against us. They didn't lose their best guy because he was smart enough to dump sets earlier in the year. Georgia is going to get killed in sectionals because no one is left to play. It makes me laugh but it is sad. I hope they disqualify the captains from future captaining.

WOW. That's huge. They'll really be struggling for players during sectionals now.

Our West GA ladies 3.5 team lost 3-2 in the finals to an Atlanta team.

Sorry about your ladies. I'm sure the officials are furious but since they can't reverse matches they're stuck

The 3.0 team from Cartersville that won state had 4 people get dq'd.

I've been to the tournament before and Ive never seen as much cheating. I think we actually played and lost to those very guys in ALTA. They told us they were in the State tournament at 3.0. What a joke. They beat us at high B level in Alta. Of course they were going to win

It's interesting to hear about so many people in GA being DQ'd. My doubles partner was DQ'd. I've been to state as a 4.0 four times, and this was the weakest competition I've ever faced. I think it's because they bumped so many people up. I was finally on a state-winning team this year, but it kind of sucks that my partner won't be able to go to sectionals. It's not like he's that awesome.

What really seems unfair is that none of the teams that beat us at state in past years were subject to this kind of crazy arbitrary DQ-ing. The guy who beat me in singles in the final 2 years ago is now playing 5.0. He was allowed to play at sectionals. It's not like my partner was playing that far out of level. Yes, we won all of our matches, but that's because we've been playing together for years. My partner got DQ'd and so did both of the guys we played in the last match, but the other team's stud singles player who really had it coming did not. It just doesn't make any sense.

4.5 players in 3.5? Sure, go ahead and DQ them, but a rising mediocre 4.5 in his last year as a 4.0 should be allowed to go to sectionals. Somebody has to win, and that team has the best players. I think once you qualify for state, you should be safe for the season unless you're playing way out of level.

Screw the USTA--I'm going to kick somebody's ass at sectionals.

Zman, I had 3 guys from my state final team DQ'd and you are right, I was shocked that my #1 singles player didn't, I expected that. The three guys that got bumped were self rate 4.0's, after one season, they automatically got bumped to 4.5. One of my guys that got DQ'd was 3-3 at the state tourney and he got DQ'd???? Crazy.

Since a bunch of my guys got bumped to 4.5 after the 2009 summer season, we played 4.5 in the Atlanta winter league against a bunch of 5.0's rated 4.5. We went from being a good 4.0 team to an 0-6, 4.5 team.

USTA rating doesn't make any sense at all.

I agree, but there were also a LOT fo people from last year's State tourney who got bumped. I think we drew them all last year...

I also agree about once qualified for state, you should be safe through that year, unless it's painfully obvious you shouldn't be playing at that low a level.

I feel it's more a localized Atlanta-area problem. There might not be *quite* enough 5.0 players to get a good league going, or maybe they all get blown away at sectionals (there were only TWO 5.0 teams in 5.0 at State), so they underrate and play 4.5. However, it is a problem that needs to be rectified.

What's really fun is playing 9.0 mixed and coming up against a 4.0 male/5.0 female team. That was a fun match...

They won the B4 City Finals. Most of those guys are on the ALTA team, but not all of them. They are becoming good tennis players and continue to improve. Some are playing low 4.0 and some are playing 3.5 for the next usta season.

Hoyt-We played you at state this year. It was a fun match. We were from Cherokee. The ATL singles and line 1 dbls guys were very good. The other two lines were just good. It is sad that in the finals 7 of the 16 players were DQ'd. The singles kid from Rome was easily a 4.5 player.
