Does anyone here play or know about the USTA scene in Jacksonville FL? Is there a good amount of 4.5 and 5.0 tennis? Do you have to be a club member to play on a team? Is it reasonable to commute from Amelia Island or Yulee for matches?

Yo vin.....that's great you are now hangin' w. the 4.5 and 5.0 types. Must be because of the lesson I gave you and Paul's excellent training ;) Hope you are well. Ya man, you could get your fill of tennis at that level if you wish to make the commute, and you dont have to be a club member i dont believe. . you could of course get on a USTA league team. a former regular hit of mine used to do stuff like that. You could start by maybe contacting Boone park which is a nice public facility in Jax and see how they do inter-club tennis. Also check out 1stserve.com. Think they have a jacksonville chapter

maybe you dont know that Paul now has a new bouncing baby?
Dont know if you know that jacksonville is the largest city geographically in the country so your drive time would be depending, but from the island it is 42.34 minutes to downtown Jax, and depending on where you are in Yulee, 25.68 minutes. hope this helps. be in touch as you like. best,
    Ed

We've got a flex league going in Kingsland, GA, which is just over the boarder from FL. The travel times are about the same as they are from FB/Yulee to Jax -- about 20 min from Yulee or 40 from the island.

It's not official USTA matches, but we've got growing interest. Check out camdenareatennis.googlepages.com if you're interested.

Hi Ed, how are you? I'm a 4.0 right now, but also playing 4.5 USTA at home, and of course, hope to be 5.0 some day and just want to know that there will be leagues available when I do. ;) There are only three 4.5 teams back home and the number of 5.0 players can probably be counted on one hand, maybe two.

Are there any USTA leagues on the Island? I heard that the Ritz and Plantation have teams. It would be nice to not have to trek to Jacksonville, but I would if I had to.

Thanks GPB, I will keep that in mind. There can never be too many tennis opportunities. :)

    Hola,
I'm doing great thanks for asking. The quick answer is No on the USTA leagues. They exist here but are along the lines of 7.0 combined mixed doubles or the ever popular Womans working league (the husband works and the woman plays tennis all the time). :) I can hook you up w. a couple regular hits on the island at your level.. . as for me, there are several 5.0 types living here i know so i've got plenty and my tourney days are over, so i rarely leave the rock. Think you are going to need to go to jax....lots of good tennis there for sure, and you seem to like the organized play. didnt know about the group up in Kingsland, GA..not far at all.
Let me know if you need info on aything about the island. there are great housing deals to be found mostly off island...there is a huge glut of homes and the developers are fighting for the $$. on island, things are bouncing back and not so much inventory..you're better off here on the rock as far as appreciation goes, but the best values are to be found off island. good luck man..Mojo

Living on Amelia Island and playing USTA in/around Jacksonville is still in my plans for the future. I think both Amelia Island and Jacksonville offer plenty of tennis oppertunities. Here are the USTA men's 4.5 teams. Only 4 teams, but still not bad. There's a lot more at the 3.5 and 4.0 level's, of course. Maybe I'll see you there sometime.
