Based on this week, it seems like reports of OSU's demise have been greatly exaggerated. If Rola indeed comes back, they got:

    1S: Rola (top 5 player)
2S: Kobelt (A little inconsistent because he relies on the serve so much, but still a top tier #2)
3S: McCarthy (Not sure why he isn't playing this weekend, but a very good #3)
4S: Van Engelen (Same as McCarthy with absence this week, but a solid player for sure)
5S: Christ (If this weekend is any indication, should be a very good #5. If he beats Hiltzik, I think it is safe to put him ahead of Bernstein as the best #5 in the *******)
6S: Smith (Probably the best #6 in the country outside of Virginia)

And if McCarthy or Van Engelen are injured or out for whatever reason, they have solid #6s in Diaz or Callaghan. If Rola returns, that looks like a team in the 2-5 range (behind Virginia, but competitive with Duke, USC, and UCLA).

Michigan should be a solid team in the 7-10 range. Illinois has depth and could conceivably be a top 16 team. The rest of the ******* is entirely devoid of great teams, unfortunately. Some solid teams (ND, Indiana, Minnesota) but nobody who can make it to Nats at Champaign.

I live in Socal, it would be nice once in a while to see northwest and the southwest in a combined tournament.

Sounds about right. Rola is the big key. I still expect OSU and Michigan to duke it out for the Big Ten title this year. Illinois has some good young players but no solid #1 OR #2 so it's anybody's guess how they will do. If they end up top 16 I will be very happy.

Yeah, only 32 people. 8 quarterfinalists from All-American. Normally, 2 or 3 wild cards, I think. Throw in these twelve qualifiers, and you are only talking about 14 or so guys who get in based on rankings if they don't win Regionals (this is assuming a little overlap between high rankings and quarters at AA & winners of Regionals). There are a lot of great players who aren't in that group.

Thanks again, if that's the case why not have a larger draw?

Memphis wins 4 of their 6 matches today. 1 doubles and 3 singles. The test get more difficult tomorrow.

If any good teams have the guts to play them at home this year and you plan to make the trip let me know.

Indoor facilities are usually not as big as outdoor facilities. Maybe they want to permit someone to host with good (but not numerous) indoor courts.

McCarthy is a 5th year senior. He seems to be playing Futures and men's opens this fall. I saw his name in the Mansfield, Texas, Futures this week (maybe in the qualifying draw). I suppose that he already has a degree, or can get one after the spring semester without any credits this fall.

McCarthy played behind Ille Van Engelen last year. I don't know that they will swap this year. Diaz had quite a run at the ITA All-American tourney.

Connor Smith is very good, but Duke and Virginia will both contest the best #6 claim. Not sure what USC and UCLA will show at that position this year. A lot of questions remain to be answered at the National Team Indoors in February. Depth has usually been a strength at Ohio State, and this year will certainly be no exception. They might miss Chase Buchanan more than most people think. He was on a tear to end the year, and was their best doubles player IMHO.

What a week by Valente of Georgia State. Crafty player, saw him several years ago when he beat Bizjak at Clemson. I was impressed by his game then.

Not a very good loss by either Shane in the Atlantic region. Although Contini can play.

Saw a few matches in Cary today. Biggest upset was Cameron Silverman from Elon beating top ranked Cunha of Duke in three sets to reach the finals tomorrow. Silverman faces Esben Hess-Olesen from UNC, who defeated Chris Mengel of Duke. Cunha and Hemmeler meet Cooprider and Blank from UNC-Wilmington for the doubles title.

I saw these two matches in person today.

I must say Harrison Richmond looked VERY impressive. It's great to see an 18 yr old player with an all-court game. He can hit a nasty slice backhand and really dictates points with a lethal forehand.

Justin is not quite 100% recovered from a back problem. It will be interesting to compare him to the first year stars when they are all healthy at once. We won't likely see Justin in a match again until January.

Ryan Shane has a huge, aggressive game. Dictates points. Consistency is always the first thing to work on when a young player with that style gets to college. I think he will end up in the top 6 this year in singles, but there is plenty of competition.

Harrison showed up better prepared to play doubles than most guys from American junior tennis. He does not just stay back and grind. It will be interesting to see what happens in the spring when Mitchell Frank is 100%. Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank were starting to click as a doubles team late last spring, and now Alex and Harrison are doing well. Hard to keep Harrison out of the doubles lineup, but also hard to keep Mitchell out when he is ready.

A year later, after we lose Jarmere Jenkins and Julen Uriguen from the doubles lineup, I can see Alex/Mitchell on one team and Richmond/Styslinger on another team in their sophomore seasons.

Freshman Nolan Paige has advanced to Monday's main draw singles semifinals at ITA Northwest Regional Championships. Still on a roll after upsetting the #1 seed. It turns out these freshmen recruits could turn out to be the best in the country.

In the singles semifinal round, freshman Krista Hardebeck will take on California's Tayler Davis at 11 a.m. Hardebeck is the tournament's No. 5 seed while Davis is seeded No. 10.

I saw that Daigle is going to UVA and they are getting a couple of other strong recruits according to a source. The team is going to be deep with Richmond, Shane, Daigle, Styslinger, Ryan Shane, Frank, Domijian and whoever the new recruits are.

I'm actually kinda excited to see how Harrison develops and grows as a player over the next 4 years. As Harrison gets stronger and further develops his all-court game, I see him doing big things in NCAA singles & doubles. The sky is the limit for that young man.

Once Mitchell Frank is well again, I'd have to agree with you on the doubles teams arrangements. It'll be hard to not play Alex/Mitchell as a team.

    Go Hoos! (Class of '00)

Romain Kalaydjian the new guy for USD is really good and fun to watch .. he took out Yannick Hanfmann and was leading Marcos Giron in the 2nd but it seems that he ran out of gas... Clarke Spinosa is always tough .. this is a solid middle line-up...
