He looked in control of the match, up two sets to one. Then at 3-1 up in the fourth set tiebreaker let Anderson back in the match and couldn't recover from that point.

    Anderson played really well though.

Nah... that category is reserved for Gael Monfils. 8)

Verdasco does deserve some type of recognition for his choking though.

I will visit his shrine in New Port at The International Tennis Hall of Shame, located in New Port Richey, FL, across the street from the IHOP off the access road.

    Viva Tabasco.

Worthy of a bump after losing 6-1 6-0 to Nieminen?

Granted Nieminen is a worthy opponent but this scoreline is just unacceptable.

I'm sure I've seen someone blow a 5-0 TB lead; just can't remember it. That was impressive. I will say Falla has improved greatly in the last few yrs - good win for him.

Injured? Dumped by gf? Or just a typical 'Fernando being Fernando' moment?

Man Verdasco has come a long way from his days of saying only Nadal could beat him on clay.

Matosevic pretty successful, considering this was his 2nd ever appearance in the main draw of a clay event.

On the verge of making the quarters at SW19...Who would have thought it!!..Assuming he does play Murray (which is most likely), Andy cant afford to float the second serves as he did at times against Robredo as Verdasco can really hurt you on the return. Really looking forward to this match...

Spending 10 mins or there about to entertain myself with this thread was worth it, this thread should be on the first page.

However Verdasco had so many early exits this year, that should have been checked in here.

Verdasco can play realy well on slippery surfaces. I remember him dispatching Nadal on the blue clay of Madrid.

I always thought Verdasco was ridiculously talented. Impressive dispatch of Gulbis. Has he straightened out his service yips? He is known to double fault frequently, and at the most inopportune times.

Yes, he hit some sick shots in that match and was pretty impressive overall. But Nadal still should've won that match, I've never seen him choke away a match like this one.

Is Verdasco a Nadal clone? Spanish, lefty, hits heavy topspin. I'd love to see him do well...to make up for the loss of Rafa.

Solid work on the avatar. WCA approves...

Whoa! A lot could happen in the next 24 hrs - Verdy could go Verdy and stink up the place and be back at his Dad's restaurant pounding red wine Tuesday...

Having said that, it would be a nice story. It was starting to look like he was going to be a dubs specialist with Marrero.

Okay, so how has this guy been doing lately?
He started the season pretty badly, probably topped by the 1, 0 loss against Nieminen at IW. But I did read he had some neck problems at the time so we could blame it on that.

He has been doing better lately and hasn't had any embarrassing losses after Monte Carlo. He lost early all the time in the clay season but always to a decent opponenent: Gulbis, Tsonga, Ferrer, Tipsarevic (at RG, 8-6 in the fifth set).

He really impressed me at Wimbledon where he dismissed Gulbis pretty easily, although I haven't seen the match. He also played very good against Murray and was very close to beating him. Maybe that was the start of a better period for Fernando.

Now he's had a decent tournament at Hamburg, where he beat Bautista-Agut and Janowicz. He lost to Delbonis in typical Fiasco fashion, having a match point in the 2nd set and being break up in the 3rd before giving it away. Then he gets a point penalty for hitting a ball into the stands and he's mentally out of it and loses his service game on love and that was pretty much the end of the story.

Anyway, he's doing better now than at the start of the year.

Never saw this thread until today, but the thread title is catchy, and, more importantly, accurate. In a book of expressions, the one that goes "Million dollar talent, ten cent head" should have his picture by it...along with those of Gulbis, Bird Bytche, and probably Mon-fizz, as well.

don't forget that verdasco had a lot of health Problems in the last years (mostly knees I think). he is probably not the mentally strongest but if he was consistently healthy he would have had a much better career over the last years.

if is just hard if you cannot consistently Train and Play matches.

Completely collapsed after leading 2 sets to 1, 5-5 .

Kept hitting out all the time.

I get the feeling he is not interested anymore in fighting on court.
