I remembered seeing that the morning after and saying to myself "so much for nadal being the future of tennis." how wrong I was.

roddick's loss to johansson was a bit of a shocker. too bad both of their careers were never the same after 04

    Yeah, that's the irony. :-|

Johansson? Can you show me a link of some of his matches?

So that's why Nadal passed him like a dinner-table biscuit at the 2011 USO? Lol jk.

Bad technique got Ralph in a bit of a tangle there.
This is what would've happened to him on a regular basis in the 90s.

I just realized that he was wearing Reebok apparel. When was he sponsored by Lacoste? 2008?

johansson was supposed to be the next big thing in tennis. tall, huge game, one-handed backhand. kind of like raonic in terms of style of play. injuries ended his career way too early.

It was not 141 mph - the ball loses most of its initial velocity after crossing the court and bouncing off the surface. Plus the ball hit Nadal's racket first, and then ricocheted to his face.

Still, it surely was very painful. Probably not as painful as getting bageled in the first set.

What a shame. He looks like he's better than Karlovic and Isner. Would probably beat big John 6-1, 6-3.

    Yes, I also realized that.

My guess is that the ball was probably 30-65 mph when it hit finally Nadal in the face.

huge serve and forehand. serviceable backhand. not a great mover. could have made a slam final here and there, but to be frank the top guys now really would have exploited his movement. still probably would be a consistent top 10-15 player.

actually, he's kinda like a better Lukas Rosol. he's beaten nadal before, as well.

Yeah, I can tell by Roddick's aces. He wasn't in position most of the time.

Honestly, that's one of the best tennis matches I've ever seen (but it was big serves, big shots, and very short points).

Playing Nadal on clay? That sounds like his worst match-up.

It would be interesting for Almagro-Johansson, Monfils-Johansson, and Federer-Johansson.

I saw that he was sponsored by Yonex too.

such a shame for swedish tennis as a whole. two of their best from the past decade taken out of the game. johansson is already gone, and I doubt we'll ever see soderling on tour again

Jesus, this match. I remember people saying that this watch could have been tricky for Roddick, owing to Nadal's clay court prowess and win over Fed earlier in the year, but I think there wound up being a 15-20 minute stretch in the third where Nadal was genuinely competitive and that was it. Roddick really wiped the floor with him, and I wouldn't have been at all surprised if Rafa had this match in mind when he smoked A-Rod in kind in 2011.

I really miss this Roddick, he didn't give 2 sh**s about his opponent when bombing serves and crushing forehands.

    Oh my...

That match was excellent. The court looks like it is playing incredibly fast and both players are teeing off on every other shot

Roddick's movement and defense looked pretty good in that match too. I really liked tennis from the late 90's to early 2000's. There were a lot of different styles and courts that worked.
