Red Sox, Fed, Pat Tillman, Lance...

This has been a great year in sports. It's tough but honestly after reading all of them, I think Tillman deserves "American Citizen of the Year".

I voted for Fed, but there aren't enough tennis fans out there to make it happen for him. Tennis, unfortunately, is not a mainstream sport so while all the baseball, basketball, and football players get all the glory, tennis players have to take a backseat, at least until tennis becomes more popular with the general public.

Tennis is an international sport and a big international sport. It is second or third (After soccer, F1..) in Europe and it is number 1 in some countries. It certainly is much bigger than football, basketball or baseball worldwide.
So, if you look at it from that percpective, it certainly stands out.

The majority of SI voters are american. Do you think people in Argentina care about Lance Armstrong?

Aaah right so its Sports in general, and not just for tennis.

Well compaired to other sports, tennis i such an individual thing, you have to say Federer is up with any individual.

    rhubarb,
you should read Pat Tillman's bio on that link (or do a google search) He's truly a rare human being.

As far as awards go, I find them pretty meaningless & unimportant. I'm sure athletes could care less about them, they play for championships not for fan polls(though SI doesn't use the results of the poll to make their decision). Do you think Federer has ever read SI?
Also, the only tennis players that have been named Sportsman of The Year by SI are Evert in '76 & Ashe in '92.
My odds of winning the lottery are better than Roger's winning this award.
