Judging by how hard he pushed Djokovic this year at the AO, can Wawrinka emulate Gonzalez and make a run to the final? I think with the right draw (if a top 4 player falls before the quarters or if he has Ferrer in his quarter) he can make the final.

I reckon he can do it, he's improved a lot this year with Magnus Norman.

Maybe, but he still can't get through either Nadal or Djokovic. Particularly the former.

He has the most beautiful game of any player right now. Unfortunately his God Mode doesn't show up long enough to close out any 5-set matches against the Big 3; but when it does show up, he's unstoppable. That first set against Djokovic this year at the US Open was unreal. He came out all-guns-blazing.

He needs to learn how to finish matches when he's ahead. Once it goes to 5 sets he's a goner.

Easily. I really wish it was Gasquet who had the insane improvement though. :( The tennis Gods aren't with me this year. Still, he's done a good job and is sitting comfortably in the top 10. Anyway, Wawrinka can do some serious damage, especially if something mental builds up with Djokovic. I'm not sure about a final run though. He made the USO semis, so the AO semis certainly aren't a stretch.

It's possible given a good draw. I personally think he can beat Murray (given he will be just back from injury) or Ferrer in the quarters, final might be a slight stretch but if he can pull off an amazing form during the semis then he has a chance.

Interestingly enough, Wawrinka has a very decent 5 set record. 20 wins to 15 losses. 5 set matches against Djokovic are very different from 5 setters against anyone else.

Yes, Wawrinka's 5 set record is fine, and he is very capable of a final run, but I don't think he can win it. Mental toughness is still (and probably always will be) his biggest problem.

Wawrinka is playing as well as he can now. He won't improve much from this point onwards and I think he may get to SF of one or two slams.

Oh he can and will do it. He won't make it past the final, though.

I think he has an outside chance of getting into the final. However, he needs a good draw and luck to win it.

Not a chance unless Stan gets same draw Nadal got at 2013 USO or 2010 USO. That of course means Nadal himself would have to be out before the semi.

Considering he is completely incapable of beating either the #1 or #2 seeds for the upcoming Australian Open, it is already next to impossible. Only possible if one of those two lose before whichever round he is slated to play them.

I think Stan can but I want him to WIN a grand slam and finally complete the sequence of getting out of Federer's shadow.

Stan has got the talent and game to win a major but like Berdych the problem with him is MENTAL. Sometimes, Stan gets so nervous and tight he makes silly errors.

I feel Stan really BLEW the US OPEN semifinals against Novak Djokovic he played a sloppy second set tiebreaker if he had won that he would have WON the match.

But by losing the second set he kept Novak in the match and he lost as usual in the fifth set.

The mental toughness is missing from the next pack of guys in the top 10.

People crap on Robin Soderling BUT he's the ONLY player outside of Federer, Nadal, Murray, Djokovic who has reached TWO slam finals.

Even Del Potro has not reached a second grand slam final.

I disagree Stan hasn't beat Novak at a grand slam yet but he got really close at the Australian Open and US OPEN this year.

Stan has got the game, but he needs to get the mind of a champion.

Magnus Norman is a good coach he also coached Robin Soderling and he helped Robin to get mentally stronger.

Stan needs to get an attitude stop kissing the asses of the top players. Robin Soderling NEVER was anyone's ***** he was always the guy who had an attitude and it helped him. Robin NEVER believed the top guys were better than him although they were.

But having the attitude of hating Nadal and not letting him be intimidated by Rafa allowed him to destroy Nadal at the 2009 French Open.

Wawrinka failed to beat Djokovic at the Australian and U.S when Djokovic wasn't even playing very well. Now Djokovic is playing a lot better so if he failed to even beat him then, he never is going to now. Even when he outplays Djokovic he is too mentally weak to beat him, and most days he wont even outplay him. Their last two matches were blowouts so the days of Wawrinka getting chances to beat Djokovic to choke away might be over.

He peaked. He will drop off in 2014. You can already see the dropoff at the WTF tbh.

You do know that Aus Open starts in couple of months? I believe he is going to peak until the end of 2014.

And you saw the last comment I made. He dropped off at the WTF. You'll see more dropoff in 2014. Even if Australian Open is just a couple months away. His peak was the early part of 2013 imo.

Didn't he beat Berdych who is supposed to be a better player and David Ferrer and reach semifinals?

He was not competitive with Djokovic their last 2 meetings. And Berdych has dropped off as well. Ferrer was exhausted from playing 7 weeks straight.

If every top tenner but the top two are 'dropping off' then Wawrinka can still reach sf or f depending on upsets unless you think the top twenty are suddenly going to start GOATing

All he needs is a good draw with no Nadal on his side and he is a lock for semi.
