Weve made fun of Nalbandian but Malisse?

Many of us on the boards here have given David Nalbandian a hard time for putting on an extra few pounds in his career, heck some of us have even called him fat.

I was truly surprised yesterday to see Malisee. He looked fat out there with his belly making his shirt poke out. Heck my wife does not even follow tennis and walked through the room and said "Why is that guy so fat?".

That picture truly does not give the impression of how big Malisees' gut looked on TV last night. How long has it been that way?

Anyone else get the same feeling?

Recently at Wimbledon, I thought Xavier played really well against Federer and gave the maestro fits, so looks like putting on weight may not be so bad for him! :)

The game is more physical than ever. Some humans actually store energy in blubber, like other animals.

You need an edge somehow....

He probably gets extra plow through in his groundstrokes with the extra weight behind him. Remember , more momentum is always good.

Ok fat may be too harsh especially if your American.

So many Americans are obese these days our perception of "fat/overwieght" is no longer aligned what is medically determined as "ideal" weight.

So compared to the average American Malisee is by no means fat.

Compared to top tier athletes he certainly looks overweight if not outright fat.

Malisse is an old tennis player whose prime is well past anyway, but he is an underachiever in general. He was hyped up alongside Safin and Hewitt a number of years ago. Speaking of Nalbandian he also totally blew making that 2002 Wimbledon final. Nalbandian was well below his prime level and on his worst surface, Malisse should have won their semifinal easily but got so nervous he had to stop the match from heart problems at one point, and the match still went 5 sets. He would have given Hewitt a tougher time too I think.

Malisse will be the Randy Quaid of tennis when he retires, that's what I took from yesterday's match. Anything amiss with his waistline will just be down to genetics at this point; there aren't that many players with Jan-Michael Gambill physiques, Petkovic and Verdasco withstanding.
