where a string has worn a groove into another string. If you move a cross string down you will be able to see them in the mains. Crosses dont usually notch unless your main string is harder than your cross string. If you are looking for a cross string notch, move a main from one side to another

Notches are when one side of the strings have dug into each other.

It's mostly crosses notching into the mains.

if you are using polyester strings then just move one of the strings to the side youll see a little groove - thats a notch.
