What can I do in the next week to get more fit for a match?

    I play tennis 3+ times a week by playing in tennis clinics. So I'm doing drills and also playing a lot of doubles points. In the clinics the instructors say I'm like a machine, since I don't ever show sign of fatigue. However, when I play a competitive match it's another story completely.

    When I'm playing all out in a set I can feel pretty fatigued after playing long points within the 1st 3 games. As the set goes on I try to not show my opponent, but I feel exhausted.

    Next week I'm playing someone in a tournament where I know I can beat him as far as the tennis points, but it requires hitting a lot of balls, a lot of running side to side, and then quickly closing out the point at the net.

    Any ideas on how I should train? Why do I become exhausted playing sets but not playing in clinics? Anything I can do during the match to stop tiring?

    Intentionally lengthen the breaks between points and games. And within just a week, IMO you cannot improve fitness with any training. Rather, decrease training on the week before tournament, and be sure to fuel yourself with lots of excess carbs within the last two days before the first match.

    Are you doing anything before your matches to get ready to go full speed once the action starts? What you're describing sounds like that lag that's easy to run into when we only take a 10-15 minute hitting warm-up on the courts.

    If you're not doing it now, try going for a short run - only a few minutes - to get your heart rate up and a little sweat going before you get on the court. Otherwise you'll drive yourself into more significant oxygen debt, etc. when you start to tear around the courts with your cardiovascular system idling in low gear. If you're at an indoor club with a gym, you might also be able to get on a stationary bike or something like that.

    I also like to eat a granola bar or something like that to avoid the sugar-shakes early on in a match. Easy to stash a couple of them in the bag.

    You can't do much in a week but I like jump rope. Do a warm up of around 5 mins 20 secs fast as you can, 20 secs off. Repeat for 8-10 mins. Working intensely then resting like this should replicate a hard few games.

    I always thought I should rest as much as possible before a match. Would a light warm up with someone else for maybe 20 min before the match work too? Is the normal match warmup not enough to get out of low gear?

    Would eating a banana early during the match help? What about drinking something besides gatorade/powerade? They make me nauseous, but I know I need to drink a lot since I've had problems with cramping after long matches

    ^^This^^ is what you should be doing. I find that a 10 min warm up on a bike and 5 mins on a jump rope have helped out a lot. Make sure you're not doing any static stretches either. This will fatigue your muscles real quick. Take a few extra seconds in between points, too as others have mentioned.

    Eating a banana is fine but eat it in small bites throughout the match. I ditched the gatorade a while ago and started making my own. You can search-engine several different recipes. Super easy and way better for you. Doesn't taste as good but I definately needed a better way to replace my electrolites.

    Are you more nervous and holding your breath or otherwise breathing differently in match play that you don't do during practice? Just a thought.

    Good point.

    Breathing made such a big difference to my game. Breathing out with every contact expecially. I used to be against grunting before and always ended up holding my breath during my stroke. Now i grunt lightly, helped me regulate breathing. Helped improve consistency.

    This is what happens to me during all my league matches. The warm up never seems long enough and I feel like my heart is beating much too fast for how long I've just played...I'm just starting to break a sweat. This happened to me this week. I'm 3-2 on serve with a guy I should beat easily...changeover I feel way too amped.

    Take a few very deliberate deep breaths, an extra 30 seconds to relax (I'm usually the first one up) and proceed to win the set 6-3, and the second 6-1, feeling little or no fatigue....because now I'm throughly warmed up.

    I do think a leisurely 10 minutes on the eliptical or treadmill is in order for me.

    This is nerves. There are many approaches to solving nerves. Mental therapy is big now with tapes and videos. But the best way to conquer nerves is to play lots of matches, even USTA if you can. Belief in yourself only comes from believing you deserve to win because you put in the hard work.

    For me it was always about the nerves. Try a half to a full shot of liquor before you play. Just enough to cut the nerve, but not enough to affect your play.

    I wish I was joking about this, but it has helped me tremendously.

    Nobody plays a "real match" as good as they practice, even a lot of pros admit to nerves. The first thing to do is admit it to yourself and even talk about it to someone else. Getting it off your chest helps. Understanding the dynamics of nerves doesn't solve them but helps you deal with them better. I haven't heard the alchohol solution (it makes sense though) but i have tried ibuprofen with some success.
