i thought someone said he was playing nadal first round, but i see the draw and there is NO NALBANDIAN??

is he a withdrawel through injury again?

i hate when he is injured, a fully fit nalbandian is a joy to watch, remember in the lead up to the aussie open how hot his form was? he was clearly 2nd best player to federer i thought then, and also the french he played so well on his non preferred surface.

and of course last years us open, how good was he until some dodgy line calls came up!!

hope hes fit and firing for us open

He withdrew with an injury. Which has been the story of his career since those alleged dodgy line calls. His wrist was pretty bad even then. Which likely is why Roddick took the next two sets. Let's get over that already!!!

So Rafa played Chela in the first round instead. It was a last-minute substitution.

Poor Rafa. As I said earlier on this Board, he doesn't lose in anything but dramatic fashion. And it was true today. He lost the first set 4-6, and then won the next set 6-4, converting his third set point. And then he and Chela were on serve in the third set, and Rafa went down 0-40 on his own serve, came back and won the game. Then he broke Chela, and then he served for the match. He was broken again, and then he got to a third-set TB, which he lost, 7-3.

So close, yet so far. But great effort, Rafael! He needs a bit more experience in closing out matches, and also a bit more pop on his serve. But he'll get that in time. :)

And lovely to see him featured here on TW:

    Great job, TW!

I was working out in the same room as him in Toronto at the Hotel and he ran the treadmill for about 45min so I doubt he has an injury to lower body. One thing that I found interesting with the Toronto was that Ferrero who defaulted his match early against Santoro stuck around and played his doubles. At this stage in the year if he was truly injured I wouldn't think that he would hang around for the doubles.
