Hewitt: “It was a tough match. I probably played the bigger points a little bit better at times. He played extremely well for not having played a lot of matches lately. He is a class player and knows how to play the big points well.”

Got this from atptennis webbie recently, what do they mean by big points?
Can someone explain this to me?

Big points are the points that are the most important. Breakpoints, setpoints and matchpoints are all big points.

big points could also be 30-30.. next point won could set up a break point

or if your serving love-30.. if you lost another point that would set up 3 break points...

    etc

I thnk 15-30 & 30-15 are HUGE. I play them like someone is there and will shoot me in the head if I lose that point. It sets up double game point for whoever is up and it is a common circumstance, less common than being down 0-30 on your serve.

Very true Shaolin. Those I find are the biggest determinants in the outcome of games. Those points are huge. As well as break points for me. The deuce point is also very huge in a game but you are right as the 15-30/30-15 points to be the biggest.

As you can see, people here have stated what the big points are. Basically, they are just the most important points. What usually separates the top players from the run-of-the-mill players is the top players play the big points better, while the rest is fairly equal.

Brad Gilbert said it all best in his book.

The "set-up" points or games. A point or game that can get you to the set point/game.

i.e. 0-30, 15-30, 30-15, etc. and game scores where someone has 4 games.

Yes, a big point are points that are crucial and might decide the winner or loser of the match.

They are big points, but in your mind you shouldn't be thinking about the result of it because you would get tight and miss in the end or make stupid errors.

I had always heard that the 7th game was the most important one in a set.
