He had a black paint job racket last night against Nadal. Babolat bag but didn't look like a Babolat stick. Any ideas?

Though it looks like he had also used the LM version... see the ridges at 10, 2, 5 and 8 o'clock? Had a Prestige PJ...

And here you can see the black paint scraped off... revealing the original Head Flexpoint Instinct frame...

That's definitely a PJ of the ridges. On a regular Liquidmetal frame the colorscheme of the ridges would be uniform and not two different shades of gray (and no, it's not just a shadow).

This is what real ridges look like (at 10 and 2).

Chances are he used an actual instict with the liquid metal and as we know flexpoints. It wasnt like he went from the LM instict to the FXP one and just had a pj, he tried and moved to the frame from a prestige.

Based on the width of the frame showing the LM ridges... too wide to be an actual Prestige... yes? Although, looks like its capped. Hmm.. can you CAP an LM or FP Instinct?

Why do unsponsored players black out their racquets? Are they required to do so or are they trying to tell potential sponsors they are available?

I'm thinking it's more of the latter. They probably do it because they know that they can get money just for sporting a certain brand, and if they black it out, they have more of a chance of somebody wanting to pick them up

    Hi Baseline :)
I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say? For the greater part of his carreer Ivo definitely has played/plays again the actual flexpoint prestige (which also has liquidmetal in it, but without the ridges). What I was saying was just that the ridges on his pre-instinct prestige/pro tour-kind-of-racquet is painted on.

That is a i.Prestige MID with a LM Prestige paint job. When Karlovic beat Hewitt at the 2002 Wimbledon 1st round he used a the i.Prestige Mid.

Also he never used the LM Instinct in tournament play.

Maybe Babolat provides him with strings and he advertises with their bag? And I wonder why he doesn't just sign with Head?...

I definitely see the liquidmetal ridges on all the blacked out pics, from the head shape and throat shape above the handle definitely looks like the Instinct, probably a PT161.

I can't see the holes, not saying they're not there. It does appear to have the black pro stock buttcap from the pics.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. Players are paid to promote a brand. If one were to set the precedent that he will promote without payment, why would anyone ever start to pay him? From there, endorsements would start to fade away for all but the most notable players. So if there's no money involved, there's a blackout frame in the bag.

Having a black butt-cap does not preclude it from having actual Flexpoint holes.

Ah, I can see clearly now,thanks...these are the real flexpt. holes? I've had the painted on ones, and have read about the "artificial ones" i.e. Pt57F and/or Pt167

They probably use some krylon paints if you really wanted to paint it you need to sand it down and prime it before you paint it to make it stick.

Also pros don't have to have a racquet contract to carry a babolat bag. Babolat was and is a string company so he could be paid in strings to carry their bag. But not paid the big dollars to put the logo on his racquet.

According to the Bab catalog, Karlovic is using a Pure Drive although that's obviously not the case lol. Could you comment on his grip size, drak?

BTW VSB, I remember you saying in another thread that the Flexpoint pro stocks flexpoints (I love that word) didn't fill a function, but I remember when I was 14, I had a PT167A (cracked but played awesomely, only 10$) which did have flexpoints. If they didn't work, why did they put them on the racquet in the first place and was there any significant difference between the pro stock flexpoints and the retail ones?

Not sure what his specs are. His grip is a custom grip by Priority One.

Yeah mos def, he IS sponsored by Babolat. Meant to be racquet, bag, strings, and shoes (which he has ditched recently for Li-Ning like every other Croat). Maybe someone can shed light on interesting string topic though.... Ivo is a traditional full natural gut player which always stymied me due to his power potential. Any chance he may have recently switched to poly or hybrid at least? I mean, those groundies at Indian Wells were frankly astonishing for the big fellow. Obviously, I've been following his career closely and I haven't seen him strike forehands like that, maybe ever. Thanks.

I think remember reading in another thread that it is equal to 7 or 8. lol
You could find it somewhere on TT board.

I use a 5 myself (I'm pretty tall) and think that most of amateur players often use too small grips (2 or 3 by default), but 7 is actually insane !
