I'd guess about # 300 in the world, or maybe even a decent futures or Challenger player!

a solid 5.0 - weak 5.5 could take down almost any female player
a strong 5.5 could take down any female player
    IMHO

I think it was serena or venus who said that its difficult for them to beat their (male) practice partner, who is ostensibly a relative nobody

The USTA explains that there is about a .5 difference between the sexes. (So a 3.0 man would be competitive with a 3.5 woman.) Then they go on to say that at the highest levels this becomes a 1.0 difference. So a 6.0 man can compete with a 7.0 woman. That is the very top of the scale, so when it is skewed this far, it might even be that a 5.5 man could compete with a 7.0 woman. Below 5.5, I'm sure the man would get creamed by a top WTA player.

I got to watch a little dude a few years back who moved here with his family from Russia. When he came here, he was the #1 twelve year old from his country and at the end of the year, he was the #1 kid in the world for his age group. While he was still around in the summer as maybe a twelve or thirteen year old, he was playing singles in a men's league that is typically stocked with real hitters like college players and teaching pros. He was beating men as the #2 singles player for his team. Little dude - man sized game!

A couple of years later, this young buck moved away and was spending some of his calendar year in Spain at one of the serious training facilities there as well as competing in a good deal of world class juniors events. I think I looked him up in the Aus. Open draw the year before last. Anyway, a teaching pro that I work with knows the guy who helps this kid manage his career and he'd pass along occasional stories about the young gun sending a picture from Spain with a bunch of the ladies or some of the guys from the tour who also work out over there. As a fifteen or sixteen year old, this kid would work out with Maria Sharapova and crush her 6-1, 6-1.

a few months ago the top 5 guys from our club team played the girls varsity team in singles (a top 25 D1 school) and we won all but one line. all of our guys generally have mixed results at 5.0

I think a solid 5.0 would consistently lose to a top 10 female, and probably not that closely.

So Tonlars could beat the top ranked WTA players? Awesome.

We should set up a match with Tonlars vs. Jankovic. The ultimate battle of consistency. :)

i attended a camp at the hopman academy back in high school, and more than once, found myself hitting on the court next to jennifer capriati. the best junior players down there could beat her pretty handily (these were some of the best from around the world, so, not to get bogged down in the ntrp numbers game, but probably strong 5.5/6.0, right?). but below that, your average 'very good' high schooler, strong club players, etc? Demolished. To overcome the level of consistency and conditioning of a pro athlete, you have to bring some big game.

No way that a 5.0 male could keep up with a top 10 or even a top 40 female. A D1 collegiate male, on the other hand, would probably be up to the task.

Agree with most comments on here. Even a solid or strong 5.0 is probably not quite tough enough to match the best women players' grounstroke consistency and accuracy. I think that 5.5 or good Division 1 college players can have a good match and often win against the best female players. A friend of mine that worked at Saddlebrook won a set against Hingis a long time ago.

    Make it simple.
    The answer is NO.

What level of men players can beat a top ranking female player?

The answer is: top ranking men players.

It is an obvious common sense. Lol.

They being a large public organization have the responsibilty of being politically correct though. Could they simply be downplaying the differences between both sexes? This day and age highlighting the high physical advantages of male is not the proper thing to do.

    5.0 No.
5.5 would be competitive IMHO, but might lose more or win more depending on individual match-ups (game styles)
    6.0 would (almost all) dominate

A good 3.5 man would beat Henin....it would be even more of a beat down if they have a 2HBH.

Ummmm, no. Men are vastly superior to women physically. Djokovic or Murray would absolutely DESTROY any 10 top WTA player. They wouldn't win a single game.

Judging from the amount of self-proclaimed knowledge and wisdom from posters on these boards, I would have to say that 90 percent of the male posters here believe that they can beat any Pro Player and if they physically can't, they sure know more about tennis than any females out there.

As for me, I think a legitimate Men 6.0 will do it and there aren't many of those IN THE WORLD much less this board.

Personally, I enjoy watching women's tennis and at tournaments I make it a point to watch women practice. I think that most non-pro level players can learn more from studying the WTA than from the ATP.

Me too! Probably a Challenger or USTA tour player.
I like watching Women's tennis cause you can actually see the ball and a lot of the times rallies are longer so you can study their shots better!

Not at 5.0 but a good 6.0 could beat almost all the women. The women game lack depth and the raw speed and power of the men. I am not puting the women down is just the truth.

I remember reading an artical about Serena who played some guy rank 300+ and he bagel her I dont have the link but I am sure you can find it if you look for it.

i'd refer them to the above thread. the guy's name was karsten braasch, this comes up quite often when the 'battle of the sexes' topic rears its ugly head.

however, like several have noted, apart from elite college/challenger circuit players, and touring pros of course, top wta players would lay waste to the remainder of the field.

The question being asked in this thread is about what level male player can beat a top ranked WTA player, not whether or not it is fun to watch them or whether people can learn alot about the game from watching them. And thats why the posts are doing just exactly that. People are also in some cases giving their take on that considering the evidence of 5.5 or satellite players beating top tour females, so there is proof behind it.

I wrote in another thread a while back that one of the current teaching pro's at my club played a woman somewhere in the low hundreds (ranking) and crushed her pretty badly. He was a top college player and was rated 5.5 at the time. Although she wasnt a top 10 wta player, it kind of gives you an idea. He also played a male that was ranked around 400. The 400 level player killed him... It is what it is

It also has a lot to do with what is the strength of a man's game. A player like my oldest son can just lay waste to outstanding women players due to his monster serve. He played and trained with many top women players while at Everet and Bolliterri. Women just don't hardly get a sniff at a break from a male big server, while even the best women servers would be on the lower rung serve wise of the good male players. He says it takes the womens best serves just to get up to what they are in the groove for from male peers.

But let them get you into a rally, and they can then be much tougher.

Ah, so sorry TonLars, I did not meant to go off topics. This question is a most serious question, it only comes up on average one a week on the board and deserve the upmost serious direct replies. I will strive to stay strictly on topic.

Please, allow me to atone of my transgression and rephrase my reply.

    Dear OP,

A 6.0 male will surely triumph most gloriously against the best the females sex can produce. One can explain this most obvious superiority of the males over the females when one observe how delectably wide of shoulder the males are compared to the females, observe the narrowing of the torso from the wide shoulders to the tight, flat stomach of the males, with his rippling, marble like muscles, pulsating in synchronicity with the gentle yet seductive swaying of his compact but potent hips. Appreciate the girth of his deltoids as they wrap themselves around those Herculean apex. Marvel in the visual beauty as the glistening sweat rolls down the cleavened contours of the trapezoidals. Sweep your eyes over and around the majestic curves of the male buttocks, down to the front in wonderment over those pumping piston called the quadriceps. In comparison, the female is a lump of pale, livid, fat draped on the small, misshapened form. It is a wonder that the female can play at all.

I pray this answer will satiate your desire for satisfaction

    Your devout and humble servant

    Dennis

Local club pro can make a mince meat out of Ana Ivanovic. In the old days, Chris Evert used to say, that her club pro was beating her all the time in practice. and This was when she was #1 in the world.

    6.0..

It also depends on the quality of the man's serve. If a 6.0 does not have his serve as a weapon, it will be a grind against the top ladies. they are way too consistent.
