what makes the murray serve so good?

    hi, everyone. several months ago, i was watching the tennis masters cup, specifically Murray's rr match vs Federer. That match got me thinking: why is the Murray serve so good. It has pinpoint accuracy and above average power.

    practise .. practise and more of the same .. but also i think he has a very relaxed style and simple motion so the the pitfalls for it to have a bad day are quite minimal. he is using his turn and body very well and gets a very long solid contact with the ball.. its in that way quite different from say roddick or monfils. more like safin, fed and old todd martin..

    His old coach Mark Petchey who does alot of work on British TV says he always knew there was a great serve in him as he naturally has a very good motion. The problem was that he used to get tired and whilst his heavy, fairly evenly balanced frame helped his serve in alot of ways.. it became difficult to keep reaching up for the ball and serving at 100% the longer the match went on.

    Now he's tweaked his motion, put on more muscle, and changed the balance of his racket slightly after his wrist injury.. we're seeing the results.

    hey, watching Murry now. In the past i did not think his serve was a weapon for him, however the first i noticed that his serve was a big weapon for him was his match against Federer in Dubai 2008. i couldn't understand how his serve suddenly became good. I was kind of frustrated because alot of serves that looked returnable his opponents would keep dumping in the net or missing the court and i was like what the hell r u doing put the ball in play!!!!! ect.

    watching him at the moment though i notice he hits first serve with a fair ammount of pace = to say a medium paced servers flat serve but he has come around the ball alot so puting lots of spin on it aswell. The next aspect is that with a vertually identical technique he hits it flat now and again and can get great pace 130mph+ easily this often suprises his oppont who are epecting a medium paced with spin resulting in more netting/ court missing. I think this also helps with keeping a good level of serving because he's not constanly hiting first serves full pace.

    Guys on the BBC said that Murray and his team had been looking at a combination of Sampras' and Federer's serve....getting him to turn his torso more and get more torque.

    I can't remember what else they said as i was on the phone....I overheard it on the TV!

    Yeah, Murray wanted to work on his first serve so they studied Pete and Rog and worked on murray getting more internal-external rotation and also lowering the ball toss a bit to eliminate a little pause he had developed at the top of the swing. It seems to be much more fluid now than mid way through last year, his % is up and it looks much more reliable, especially under pressure.

    what really impresses me is not his power or spin, but his pinpoint accuracy. his serve sets him up for the kill.
