The most entertaining AO you ever watched? Which year was it?

Last year's AO was pretty kickass. Followed closely by '09.

Federer and Gonzo were basically flattening everyone. Roddick and Nadal were summarily dispatched just for lulz.

That was the last Grand Slam final in which both players had a one-handed backhand. After that, the two-handers took over, and tennis became a bit uglier, a bit more boring, a bit more stupid.

I'd say either the 2006 or 2007 one.

2012 ws great. Just a random hypothetical. If Fed's super draw all come through and he wins it, 2013 will certainly go down as one of the best

2011 was the worst awful final, and two semi's which were either anti-climatic or boring.

    I'd say the Fed's 2007 or 2012 was good.

    Love the Oz Open.

I liked the one with Becker beating Chang in the final. 1996, I think it was.

Loved the one with Baghdatis making the run to the final. How many clutch second serves did he fire that second week?

Oh, and both times Safin got to the final. One amazing late-night 5 setter over RF, then he took apart Hewitt...the other when he beat everyone on the way to the final, losing to RF.

I liked the one with Laver presenting the trophy to RF.

Wilander over Cash stands out, too. Also I remember the year Mac got defaulted.

Moya in 97 beating everyone but Sampras.

And the year Becker beat Lendl. That was big.

    2009. :)

The semis and the final were great!! I liked 2007 as well, Gonzo was on fire that year. The match against Haas was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

It`s tough to point out an AO that stands out but there are some AO moments that are to be remembered.Agassi beating Sampras in a classic semi,Safin beating Federer in a thriller and going all the way,Federer and Gonzo playing amazing all the way to the finals,Baghdatis on his amazing run,Tsonga beating Murray in R1,then gets to semis and destroys Nadal, longest tennis day which ends in the morning with Hewitt`s victory against Baghdatis and so on.

2005, even tho fed didnt win it, I have some faves.

    1) fed's sonic boom fh he hit against Haas
    2) fed destroying agassi
    3) hewitt owning roddick once again
    4) The insane crazy semi between Fed and Safin. Epic classic.
    5) Safin waking up in the 2nd set and going on to destroy hewitt in the final.

also, i believe serena took out davenport in the ladies final that year.

    2005 easily.

    1) Hewitt reaching the final with the draw he had with classic matches along the way.
    2) Federer v Safin
    3) First night slam final
    4) GOAT apparel.

not talking about finals in particular, but in recent time i liked:
    • the 2004 safin run (beating martin, blake, roddick and agassi... the last two being really thrilling and high quality matches)
    • the 2006 baghdatis run (nice wins over stepanek, roddick, ljubicic and nalbandian... what a comeback in the SF !) :)
    • the 2007 gonzalez run (del potro, hewitt, blake, nadal and haas... cakewalk draw ? and of course i was particularly touched by his merciless butchering of the nadal in the QF...)
    • the 2008 tsonga run (kicking out the muzzette in the 1st round... and this flawless destruction of the nadal in the SF: now this what i call cleaning a draw !)

I have that match on DVD. Awesome. Love to watch it - but not in HD. :(

As an honorable mention, there was a final in the late 80's or early 90's where they had a little girl come out before the men's final and belt out an incredible version of 'Waltzing Mathilda'. One of the coolest pre-match events I've ever seen - really captured the spirit of Australia.

2009 AO very special as well.Rafas amazing performance in both semis and finals.Fed tears and everything was special in that tournament as well.

2006 since Nadal wasn't there and Fed had some close calls which added to the drama and it all ended with a happy ending.

Yeah that was good year as well. Straight sets victory for Fed. Nadal wearing his ridiculous outfit getting ass kicked. The only downside was that Murray didn't quite beat Nadal. That's too bad because it would have been pretty embarrassing for Nadal to lose to someone younger at that point.

^^^^ '09 was impressive - the Nadal - Verdasco is another match in my collection - the shotmaking was ridiculous.

Might want to come up with a new sig... :)

    2009.

What Nadal did was superhuman To this day, I can't believe he wasn't doping during this event. Play what a 5 plus hour match vs Verdasco then within 1-2 days beats Fed in five

    2000 Was good as well..

2005 AO was impressive quality wise from Safin-Fed

Best slam IMO, its nearly always good. Not sure what's wrong with Clarky^. 2008 was amazing IMO, Tsonga's run was magical. Even last year, the semis and final were amazing matches.

Yes, 2009 was amazing. Also 1995 when Andre beat Sampras in the final and last year was good too.

    In the most recent years:

    2005 - kicked *** from day 1. Just look at the quarter-final match-ups. Federer-Agassi, Safin-Hrbaty, Roddick-Davydenko, Nalbandian-Hewitt, most of them in their very primes. Fantastic quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

2010 - very competitive tournament, the first major in a long long time when there were like 6-7 guys who had a legit shot at winning. Also, Federer winning added some value.

2012 - the first week was OK but the 2nd was absolutely fantastic. Very high quality semi-finals and finals (despite the grindfest), pretty good quarters.

2008 - Tsonga beating the hell out of everyone, it's a pity he didn't win the title in the end. Djokovic in great form. Federer's form dipped so it made the tournament more interesting.

    Then not so much:

    2006 - everyone was injured

2007 - although some of the matches were memorable (Fed-Roddick, Gonzalez-Nadal), Federer was just too damn good that tournament so it was too predictable to me.

2009 - Nadal-Verdasco and Federer-Nadal were good matches but other than that it was way too predictable. Everyone waited for the final from day 1.

2011 - the most boring edition in the last 10 years. Absolutely nothing interesting about it.

I agree. In the last 10 years there was literally 1 edition which was boring (2011). Everyone is fresh and ready to go.

Which is when Nadal won, right? And let me guess - your favorite US Open was 2010?

I remember an insane match between Roddick and El Aynaoui, a very entertaining match between Fed and Tipsy (2008), some great Baghs ones, the first Murray/Nadal epic clash and a mesmerizing battle between Delpo and Cilic, not sure what year.

My favorite USO will be when they finally give up that super Saturday atrocity. One of my favorite matches there was the QF between Connors and Agassi (in 1989 I think), very dramatic between 2 ultimate showmen, classic generation clash.
