What went wrong for Fed against Safin in AO 05?

    It's a cheek considering all of the injury problems Marat sustained during what was really a short career (00-05) even during those years. At least Federer was healthy enough to actually play good tennis, where as Safin was playing through pain pretty much during all of 2004 and 2005. Not to mention hardly playing in 2003.

    I mean OP. It sounds like the same sort of excuses thread Nadal fans make after every loss; just eight years late.

    That's true. I recently watched that match again and I think it was one of the best matches ever. It had a nice mix of quality and drama in it.

    What I don't agree with is that it was quality from start to finish. Federer was clearly laboring in the 5th set and Marat, instead of shutting the door on Federer, hit some of the goofiest and mindless unforced errors to bring Federer back into the match.
