It all depends on who you follow, if you want breaking news this is the fastest way to get it. If you want to know what Kim Kardashian is wearing, it is a waste of time.

There's probably not a better form of communication if you're looking for breaking news. If you follow the right types of people, you can learn a lot, more quickly than if you were browsing news websites.

It also allows greater access to celebrity, if you're into that kind of thing.

    Twitter is for twits. :)

    Typical tweets:

    I just had a ham sandwich. De-lish!

Had to take my dog to the vet. Bummer!

    Just scratched my butt.

Political party x is terrible. Meanies.

    Sitting on the beach. Jealous?

If someone has something clever to say, it is rare on twitter.

I like it for following tennis pros. Some of them will post pictures from training sessions that interest me. Also, Priority 1 will post pictures of racquets during the customization process which is cool.

I use it for breaking news and for communicating with people easier. I almost never tweet unless it is directed at someone.

If you have a twitter account and post, you're either famous or think way too highly of yourself.

    No one cares

I'm kind of in this camp, too. I talk to people in order to have a social outlet.

I just don't like the whole run-run post-it note approach to things: this often drops the communication ball: communication needs to be responsive and 2-way.

I use it for updates on my favourite sports teams/players. Also I hate posting Facebook status' and I'm not one for blogging so I just post random thoughts I have on there.

its great. you gain sort of an insight into whoever you follow. the key is finding who to follow. for example, last year i found out agassi was going to be about 30miles away from me on a certain. unfortunately i had to work that day:(

It can be very useful if you know who to follow.

Not every user is a 15 year old tweeting "I just had a sandwich" or similar.

The point of twitter is to get any news in real time. Be picky in deciding which person or organization to follow, based on your taste and need.

I follow @NewEarthquake to get a live feed of any new earthquake or tsunami around the world, because some of my relatives live in a tsunami-prone areas. https://twitter.com/NewEarthquake

I follow @guardianworld to get live feed of breaking news from around the world instantly. https://twitter.com/guardianworld

    Exactly.

I used to be on fbook, deleted my account and created a twitter anonymous account. Fbook is just too impersonnal with the pics etc

on twitter: You get to access any information on any subject you like in real time. And if you have a sharppersonnality, you can quickly get followed by cool people and have intersting discussions with people.

I created my account about 1 year ago and have almost 700 followers.
IMO it's way more interactive than any other social network, except maybe Pair of course

I dont know. Fbook I guess cause it's more superficial so even if you're a moron you still have your chances by posting cool pics of your expensive car or whatever...

I also have an account but seem to be missing the point somewhat. I only check the top 10 tweets every week or so. It seems hard to keep up with and its fast moving and you have to open the tweets to see what people are talking about.

I don't get why you need to have followers and why anyone would care about what I have to say.

I would like to give it a proper go though so if anyone has any welcome tips thats fine.

    Thats a perefctly acceptible tweet.

It works really well for certain professions. Say you were a online columnist. You just simply tweet something like.

"My new column is up at (insert link)."

Fastest way to get that info out to your readers IMO.

your question would be someone who's never been on TT and doesn't play tennis asking me "tell me why i should care about someone's posts on TT?"

the stupidity of the question would render me speechless.

Twitter is what you make of it. If you want a very informative news feed with info from the weather channel, NASA, CNN, BBC, NYT or what have you, then that's who you follow. If you want stupid quotes or astrology updates, follow that. If you want tennis headlines, follow the tennis writers and broadcasters and tournaments. If you want celebrities, follow them. If you want to chat with your friends, follow them. If you just want to observe and not post much, put your account on private and no one can see can follow you. Yes, there is a lot of useless crap on twitter, but that's no different than life. Or this forum, as previously stated.

But anyone who goes on about their followers, or cares about their followers, is just... well, whatever. Half your followers are bots anyway, so whoopee.
