1984 Super Saturday...nuff said.
Watching: Around 1987/88
Playing: Around 1990, I started playing mock tennis with a badminton racket and plastic ball and string strung between two TV antennas on a terrace. Tennis equipment and training was costly, and there wasn't enough TV or internet to distract us. It was so much fun. Didn't step on a proper tennis court until 1999, when I came to the US as a graduate student.
Watching: as a child in the mid / late 80s. I remember seeing McEnroe, Becker, etc... on TV and thinking they were characters. The one-on-one nature of tennis appealed to me for some reason as all other sports i knew about were team based. I really got into it and watched the slams and major tournaments regularly in the 90s with Sampras, Agassi, Rafter and those guys. Federer re-ignited my interest in Tennis during my university years as we are the same age and he was just so talented. The guy is special. I hope Nadal comes back soon. I feel tennis needs him.
Playing: Late 80s, around 88-89 or so I pestered my parents into buying me a stick and getting a membership at the local country club. Played with friends throughout my late childhood / early teens and tried to emulate Becker (lots of scrapped knees) and Sampras.
Didn't play at all through uni, although i still watched matches and once i started my career didn't have time for any sport. A few years ago i took up squash and I'm back playing tennis since last summer and it has been awesome. like meeting an old girlfriend and realising there is still something there.
After the 2007 Patriots vs. Giants Superbowl I (technically January 2008) became completely disgusted with how some inferior team could come in and fluke their way to a championship.
I was pissed off. I got sick of team sports and how bad bounces, bad officiating, and other things beyond a team's control affected the outcome.
So I searched for an individual sport where the best players usually won and there was little if any outcome decided by refs or bad bounces or other luck induced things.
I'd liked tennis before in the 90's watching sampras, but just got away from it.
So I came back.... I decided to root for Roddick since he was my American guy to root for, then read up on the current players and watched some old matches on youtube and realized I definitely grooved Federer's style.
First tournament i watched was the 2008 French open.. and Feds got pwned... then the 2008 Wimbledon.. and that really hooked me even though Nadal won that too... at that point i realized i hated nadal just as much as i liked Federer.
Since then I've been able to watch Roger pick up the 08 USO, '09 French and Wimbledon, the 2010 AO, and the 2012 Wimbledon... I've had some heartbreakers also with the '08 wimbledon, '09 AO, '09 USO..... but it's been fun to watch.
I still generally hate team sports, and plan to stick with tennis until Federer quits, at which time i'll quit also unless a good american steps up.
can't remember exact date. Probably around 2002 or so, watch Federer play vs Hewitt, and I liked what I say, so I started following the sport
