Qualifying rounds in Newport on grass. Surface should be suited to him.

He said in interviews his plan was to rest until Newport and gear up from there for the US Open where he will have the WC he earned winning NCAAs.

he is now, but he was still playing NCAA stuff this late winter and spring right? Seems like he was focused on getting that 4th in a row for USC.

I don't know Steve, but looking at his ITF profile I would assume that he took a month of to recover and train after NCAAs and then got a WC into Newport. I'd be willing to bet he focuses on the 2nd half of the tour schedule pretty hard and gets his ranking up to a career high by year end.

He finished the NCAAs in late May with a minor stress fracture and an issue with a stomach muscle. He needed a few weeks off to rest and get healthy.

Not only DY's home state, his home town.
DY needs to just stay home, too.
What an embarassment DY is on the Olympic team.

He needed one 5 years ago. Not sure what is left to resurrect at this point. Really a sad story.

Good for Steve on his first tour and top 100 win!

^^not sure whats so sad about it. Young has proven he can be in the top 40. But he is lazy and undisciplined...and never had the ball striking to be a serious contender for the top 10 anyway.

hes another top 100 player, if he gets on a hot streak he can be near 30, the top 15-10 is another level mentally...young doesnt have it

I just think its sad that his parents never let him fly the coop. He is 2-17 in 2012 after ending 2011 on some up notes. If there was ever a time to turn him over to someone, it was after the USO. He missed a big opportunity to step up his game and tackle some of the big boys.

Not to take anything away from Steve. It is a solid win for Johnson this early in his tour career. Some good prize money and ranking points are going to be coming his way. Hope he does well tomorrow in another highly anticipated matchup...Jack Sock.

It is a shame about Donald Young. People change coaches from time to time. It might be time for someone else to see what they can do for him. Sometimes letting is hard but the best thing to do.

Yea, Stevie's return game and counter punching will need to be in top form to overcome the huge S&V game of Ram. And Ram will need to volley better than he did in the Newport semis...several costly floaters in that match.

Well, let's do the math, difficult as that might be for illustrious graduates of Stanford. Bradley Klahn was beaten 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 by Gasquet. That seems like a total of seven games for Klahn. Steve Johnson currently trails 7-6, 6-2, 2-1. That is nine games so far for Johnson.

I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine which number is larger.

too lazy, copying from Zoo tennis:

At the ATP Challenger in Turkey, both Steve Johnson and Denis Kudla picked up second round wins to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will play each other. Johnson and Kudla were in Spain as hitting partners with the US Davis Cup team last weekend. Johnson defeated top seed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, while Kudla, the No. 7 seed, advanced when Jamie Baker of Great Britain retired trailing 5-7, 6-3. 3-1.

Steve into the semifinals with a 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over Kudla. 20 aces from Steve today. Next up Illya Marchenko ranked 242 from the Ukraine.
